About to finish the fourth GoT book, and all I have to say is that the show could've went along with much cooler storylines.

I couldn't stand the books. I'm usually huge on books over movies/show adaptations. But I hated how the first was written and I didn't want to read anymore. FWIW, I've heard the 4th is the worst of the 5 by far.

Really? The first book is almost exactly what happens in the first season, but I could understand why you'd dislike it. If I hadn't seen the show, trying to learn all of those characters and put everything into context would be infuriating

It was more so the progression of thoughts. I'm writing on the side after work and one of the things that I identified as part of a successful book is how easily you can follow the train of thought of the author and progress of the story.

Take for example "the alchemist". One of the easiest reads because Coehlo's train of thought is incredibly coherent.

Or any of the Cormoran Strike novels.

Martin goes from explaining a beheading to having Robb and John race home without so much as a one sentence tie in.

It was something like "'Watch Bran. Don't look away.' [paragraph about Eddard beheading a criminal] 'Hey Robb, bet you can't beat me back to the castle'"...

So I haven't been in this thread in a while but recently I lost a really good friend of mine. And I made the mistake of falling a bit out of touch with him this fall, school was busy and I lost contact. You guys should make sure that if you have good friends you havent talk to in a while you all reach out to them.

I'm not telling this story because I want sympathy or condolences but I know that I am kicking myself for not being in touch with him as much as I could have been.

Almost the same happened to me... A very close friend took her own life last night. Everyone should stay in touch with their people and ask questions. Even if things seem ok

Had my first med school interview today. Was a truly surreal experience.

Also, really sorry for your losses guys. My best friend made an attempt las year out of nowhere, and he's one of the happier people you'll ever meet. It was such a horrible feeling when I found out

Does anyone know an estimate of how much someone would need to make to live in NYC (either Brooklyn or Manhattan) without a roommate?

I'm applying for jobs and I hate that damn question of "How much are you looking to make?" before I even get an interview.

Do you want to live in Murderville or somewhere you can feel safe and have people over? Serious question...

Is there a website you found that on or an estimate you feel is right?

Found some one-bedroom apartments for rent in the area and multiplied those numbers by 40.

In NYC, it should really be NET income = 50(rent), but for your first place on your own in SHB or KH, gross = 40r is close enough.
