I am currently in the process of moving from The Hague (Netherlands) to Vienna (Austria) for work. They offered me a position that I just couldn't turn down. I also lived in South Africa from 2006 through 2009. I have no problems adjusting but understand it isn't that easy for everyone

Where in New Jersey?

Coming from a lifetime resident of New Jersey, it's alright I guess. Despite the narrative that there's nothing to do when compared to nearby New York City, there's actually plenty to do depending on which part of the state you live in. There are many excellent restaurants sprinkled around the state. Lots of sports leagues (even for adults) that are built around the working man (and women). Lots of attractions. It's getting warm out, so there's always "the shore". Philly is usually a 1.5-2 hour drive away. NYC is usually no more than a 1-1.5 hour train ride away. Atlantic City is no more than a 2-3 hour drive away.

The reason I say it's just "alright" is that a lot of things are absurdly expensive. Your dollar for the most part will get you further elsewhere in the country than in NJ, especially when it comes to real estate. In many parts of the state, the real estate market is absurd. I like to say that I live in a nice part of the state, but unfortunately, I'm paying through the nose to rent a loft with my fiance to stay close to our parents. You'll find a hard time finding a decent apartment in a decent area unless you're ok living in a little more questionable of an area. I'm personally looking into buying a house within the next year, and the market for my part of the state is even worse for a buyer than a renter.

If you have more specific questions, you can always send me a PM.

There's plenty to do, it's just a matter of finding it and putting yourself out there. And yes, Jon and even I might buy you a beer, unless you're weird, or something.

Is there anyone here who knows enough about Montreal who would know if Le Plateau is a safe enough neighborhood to stay a few nights in an AirBnB? I asked on the Montreal forum but I didn't get a response.

Great neighborhood. Safe and scenic, but not super quiet.

Perfect, thanks. As long as I could get to the room from the train safely, I couldn't care less about the noise. Everyone here from NYC should be used to that.

Some streets are closer to the metro than others there. Check the address before you rent.

Ayyy. No idea how it compares to The Hague, where I've never been, but I've yet to find someone who didn't love Vienna.

You work for the UN?

No. I work for a large IT company and they asked me to move to Vienna for a management position. I can't turn that down. I spent a month in Vienna last February and already loved it. Now I get to see it all year long!

Whelp. Despite my rant about a month ago, my agency just gave me a big fat raise yesterday. Which is great, really. It's a 26.5% raise. Which is actually absurd and brings me to just about market value for my job.

Time to get comfortable, because I'm gonna be here for at least another year or two now.

In good news, I now make enough money to get myself a dumpy 1 bedroom apartment on this island of Manhattan. That'll open up a whole new box of worms, for sure.

Congrats, man! Glad they finally came around.

Good for you dude! As long as there is no box of worms in the apartment

At least you can make an arcade game out of it...

Did you know in the ... leg... claws of centipedes they can secrete venom as they're attacking their prey

I went to the greatest concert I've ever been to yet last night. Glorious moshing death pit heavy godness

Just got off the phone with the moving company. Monday morning they are coming by for a pre-move survey and estimate and I am officially moving to Vienna on the 22nd! My employer has approved the move and is paying for everything. They got me an apartment for the first 2 months so I am all sorted.

So happy!
