Its a fine line sites have to walk. On 1 side you need that free expression to produce hot takes and controversial opinions. They will in turn drive up engagement and produce more views. On the other you have advertisers who may not want their ads associated with controversial opinions.
So it ends up a fine line of views vs safe content

Exactly. And I will add if the rules aren’t acceptable to the individual upon applying for membership, then dont apply. Go elsewhere.
In the end the ask is that folks keep their word.

I wouldn't say the rules are an issue, where I have seen problems is there is multiple different moderators all with their own interpretation of the rules. But I guess it fits considering we're all hockey fans and at times the moderating and NHL reffing match lol
Its just 1 of those things, sure at times NHL reffing pisses me off but that doesn't mean I would ever stop watching hockey and same here, sometimes the moderation pisses me off but I won't stop being on HF either

I thought about If tomorrow HFBoards was all of a sudden extremely less active than it was now , like 500 total posts on the main board and team boards combined. It made me incredibly grateful for how vibrant and polarizing this community is, it really is the NHL of online hockey discussion

This place has free expression, countless progressive hockey talk, countless regressive hockey talk , and on game nights I truly can’t think of a better enhancement to the NHL than HFBoards excluding watching it with loved ones.

And it goes on every single day of the year, HFBoards is the place to be!! And if you’re a part of it, you’re a chosen one :D

Questionable.

Yup plus its not horribly unfair. I can go look at my history and really out of all of it I only see maybe 1-3 that I felt were unfair. Considering my history that's actually a really good picture of relatively fair moderation. Especially compared to other moderated sites.

If you ever think the moderation here is bad, try threads lol I lasted 3hrs

At the opposite end of Reddit is 4chan which has become unusable in recent years as well. There is a balance between the kumbaya circlejerk of Reddit, and the no rules, anything goes 4chan, which just becomes a circlejerk on the opposite end of the spectrum. The internet has just gotten worse. Hfboards is a good blending of people and opinions. There are some really knowledgeable posters here as well

1 aspect that could be better is how far behind the site is if you're not logged in. Say a poster is on a time out or a 1st time visitor deciding if they want to make an account and they want to follow HF, they really can't. You are essentially 24hrs behind.

Ive noticed changes as ownership has changed a few times. As well as although the rules have only slightly changed over that time period some feel more emboldened to thumb their noses at them although they agreed to the terms upon joining.
Honestly, posters were much more civil in debate years ago and less so now.

yeah, I still remember how level headed Lanny was, especially before the board migrated.

I grew up on old school forums... Runescape Forums, Clan forums, GameFAQs, other video game forums. Got into HF back in college when a friend of mine introduced me to the boards. (He's a Flyers fan and I'm a Penguins fan and one time I was actually smack-talking him in a discussion without realizing it was him lol)

There's just something special about message boards... the way people interact and communities that get built. In terms of Hockey, even some of the worse commenters on HFboards are miles better than the average social media poster.

I'm glad to have the non-sports sections of these boards as well, which I visit way more than any hockey section. I've made some friends and been introduced to a lot of movies, TV, and video games that I would not have normally been interested in.

Thought experiment, if I wanted to challenge the bolded, would that be cool or not?

Nooo.. I dont wander on Toronto / Edmonton boards to post anymore
I agree, Edmonton is bad / hostile.

Having said that, HF is a shell of it's former self. 15 years ago, it was far busier than it is now.

Not to join in on this circle jerk fest .. but this place is very chill and unique. Ive crossed the line a few times and the moderators were normal reasonable ppl, it was odd.
I'm still banned from the NFL reddit just for mentioning that the mods finally unlocked it after their protest.

No warning at all.

We're lucky to have sane people run this joint.

I agree that Reddit isn't a great place to discuss hockey. I feel like most of the posts are either reactions to some play or a meme/shit post. The funniest response tends to get the most visibility, even if it's not really relevant to the discussion.

Politics are also really annoying on there. Seems like very often, a discussion post which has nothing to do with Politics, ends up with some discussion about politics.

Unpopular opinions are usually on the bottom, hidden or even deleted at time. Yet they'll still show the other responses to those deleted comments.

The one thing I do like Reddit for is it is easier to find highlights. Sometimes I like seeing goals which are not necessarily threadworthy for HFBoards but is acceptable for Reddit. But those highlight posts drowns out posts related to discussion.

Reddit is not a fun place for hockey. Circlejerks are just uninteresting and sensing where the wind is blowing. People don't like to be downvoted because we are primitive social beings so we´d rather just stop posting.

Here I can my post my own stupid take and it's just as visible as anyone else´s. Even when I get chewed out I can occasionally get a like or post of support from people who share my particular brand of stupidity.
While it is not my call to make, this sort of thing is IMO explicitly why we don't have a "dislike" reaction here. (We do have it on That Other Forum I Help Run, but it's small enough that folks are generally allowed to blow off steam more, so it's less of an issue there. "Dislike"/downvote, IMO, does not scale up well.)
