It's disrespectful to the other team to attempt to put the puck in the net on a whistle.

Disrespectful and unsportsmanlike are synonymous. What about it is disrespectful?

The fact that there was no hockey benefit to it and it was only done to antagonize the other team. It's childish.

Antagonizing the other team is an extremely common and, more often than not, a non-penalized occurrence in the NHL. The "hockey benefit", however, was pretty obvious; it lead to the power play being negated.

What made it unsportsmanlike?

The fact that there was no hockey benefit to it, it was completely unnecessary and it was only done to antagonize the other team. You could argue there was a slight risk of injury with it hitting off the post and there being players in the vicinity of the net.

It was childish and not befitting a professional sportsman. It was unsportsmanlike.

Are you playing some sort of semantic game? It's disrespectful because the play is dead, and by shooting it at the net you're inciting the other team. If a basketball player did a layup or a quarterback threw the ball for a reception into the endzone after the whistle, it would be considered the same. People would be pissed, because that's not how you play the game. Scoring a goal is an achievement over the other team, and by putting the puck into the net on a whistle you are rubbing that in.

I disagree, shooting the puck at an empty net when you know the play is dead just to incite the other team is certainly unsportsmanlike.

I wish more people would understand this.

Kunitz knew the play would be blown dead, its just childish.

Just another example of how the Pens lose their **** against the Flyers. Mentally weak group of players.

Capitals starting Holtby again. It's crazy how much Trotz has ridden him. Will he have anything left if Capitals go into round 2? This is his 7th start in 11 days.

Kunitz deserved an unsportsmanlike call. Since he didn't get it, the Flyers tried to do justice themselves.
Pens won't make the playoffs, at least not with that attitude.

I want to believe Holtby had a say and was honest enough about his fatigue level. Hard to say for sure with the general lack of faith in Peters. I havent seen it affect his play yet so hopefully that continues.

Oh yes, he did it 100% with intent of riling up the Flyers, it showed him smiling on the bench afterwards.

A bit of Penguin bias, for the Flyers to not only lose their PP but also to receive the misconduct. Utter garbage officiating in that instance.

I was waiting for the Flyers to go ape **** on the Penguins all game, unfortunately it didn't quite happen.

Classless isn't a word I use often, not even for my most hated rival the Habs when they get their antics going... the Pittsburgh Penguins are a classless team. I remember why when I look at the captain.

It's a pity since Malkin is a player I do appreciate.

Why do you think I'm playing a semantic game? You made a circular argument in support of your position.

I'll ask again: what about shooting the puck at an empty net on a delayed penalty is unsportsmanlike?

It's disrespectful. What about it is disrespectful?
It has no hockey benefit. That's demonstrably false based on what happened today.
It's sole purpose was to incite the other team. Just like trash talking and every other thing a player does to get in to the head of another player.
It could have ended in an injury. It certainly could have, but what are the chances of this actually happening in this situation? Furthermore, does it even matter? I've seen players get upset when an opposing player gently pushes a puck in the net after a whistle.

I don't understand why people get upset at stuff like this. If anything, they should have trolled him for the rest of the game for missing.

What made it unsportsmanlike?

So you're all for players just blasting the puck after whistles for no reason? Solid way for people to get hurt, especially considering this dinged off the post and went flying out (obviously he wasn't trying to hit the post here) It's just very careless and shouldn't happen. Plus this is something they even get pissed about in novice hockey, it's just **** you don't do.

Just looking at these Eastern Conf standings is making my head hurt. I wonder who Capitals fans are rooting for at this point?

Sens win tonight sets up an epic game against the Pens, but really doesn't help THEM.

Here's a scenario, using MLB. Say there's one playoff spot left, and it goes to whoever wins the NL East. Going into the last weekend of the season, everything else is decided. The Mets lead the Phillies by one game, and the Phillies are six games ahead of the Braves. Only three games left for everybody, and the Phillies and the Mets play each other in a 3 game series on the last weekend. Who controls their own destiny:

a) Phillies
b) Mets
c) both
d) neither

The correct answer is c), they both do. No other team, apart from the Phillies and the Mets, has any way to affect who gets in and who doesn't. Both teams are "in control of their own destiny". Neither needs help from anyone else, and in this situation, neither can even get help from anyone else. That's what it means.

This is funny. Phillies and Mets fighting for the division

We root for the Leafs to beat Ottawa. If they do and we beat Detroit, we clinch a spot.

I still don't understand why Detroit is in the Eastern Conference, it makes zero sense and the Conferences are unbalanced because of it. It should be 15-15 teams per-conference, not 16-14.
