Here and Now: The Preseason

I don't hate Forbort, by all indications he is a pretty good dude. But I'm struggling to find a player who has been miscast in his role over such a long period of time more than Forbort.

It's right up there with Derek Armstrong with Palffy and Kyle Calder with Kopitar.
Indeed

Like with Armstrong, it is really not his fault. Army was an ideal 4th liner who could fill in. I think because of his draft position that Forbort is getting opportunities that he shouldn't be.
Of course, Doughty is going to make anyone who plays with him better. he was the best thing that ever happened to Muzzin.
That being said, I would rather Drew excel than be held back

other than the bottom pairing, Forbort is barely good enough to even be on this team

To keep this Kings-related, I love Tobias Bjornfot.

Now, last thing, I promise. Then my Lieutenant, Dan, can handle it from here.

Thank you very much as you refuted your own point.

DD on Derek Forbort - "I love playing with him.”
DD on TB - "I love playing with him.”

They look effusive, enthusiastic, intense enjoying... etc. Maybe even identical! Better than synonyms.

Drew is this excited because he doesn't want to rebuild but accepts that there needs to be one; however, if there is to be one, he hopes it is as fast as possible. Don't we all, right? This is the first defensive prospect that pops right away for the Kings since Doughty and Voynov. Seriously...Doughty has been here since he was 18 and hasn't seen any prospect look the part this soon for that entire time.

I've been against him staying up this season even though there was always the possibility that he is already better than some of the defenseman the Kings would be playing this season since it is probably the worst D group in the league. Him going and playing with men in Sweden for one more season would not be the end of the world so I'll be fine if they send him back.

That being said...he better be stapled to Doughty if he is going to play up here this season. I don't care if that means he is getting harder assignments. Great. I want Doughty to take him under his wing so we can finally see Doughty with some leadership maturity. It behooves Doughty to help Bjornfot be the best he can be; it appears that he knows that with the contract comment from last night.

What I don't want to see is 12 minutes a night with Sean Walker on a garbage team.

I still can't get past the fact that he didn't know that a chicken is a bird. Like, you went to college for how long?

Giant defenseman that plays soft, has no offensive ability and is apparently stupid? Sounds good.

He is good enough to stay up but I don't see the right partner. Doughty, for example had O'Donnell to handle the heavy grinding for the pairing. Kings don't have a seasoned shutdown RHD (middle pair) for him to pair up with.

LOL

the old if I get the last reply in trick. This isn't my first rodeo

Doughty's statements were very different

Let's not forget the original point, DD praises everyone he plays with. If he loved playing with DF just how sharp is he when everyone on here knows DF doesn't belong in the NHL, or is a bottom-pairing guy etc.

I am pretty sure he said the same thing about both players -- "I love playing with him".
No he didn’t, the wider context of the quote is significantly different. With Forbort he’s clearly being supportive of a guy that already has a job and pumping the guys tyres. With Fjörbot he’s sending out a much more deliberate message, that he feels he’s ready for a job, preferably on his pairing.

I’m one that thinks Forbort is a decent NHL player but is badly misused, which isn’t on him. So I have no axe to grind here, but let’s not pretend there is anything remotely similar to the message DD is delivering.

Dude, "Love" is pretty much at the top of the pyramid.

I would agree with this in 2008 but I don't think it matters now. On the same point, I would say Doughty is a 200 pound Norris-winning defenseman that isn't shy about playing physical.

Doughty was a weak teenager from the OHL immediately stepping in to a league that was still full of killers whereas Bjornfot has already been playing against men at 17 years of age and is stepping in to a league full of p***yes. Due to this, I'd argue that Doughty is the best partner for him to play with.

I say all of this as someone who generally doesn't want to put any 18 year olds directly into the NHL unless they are elite. Bjorn is a bit different though since he has already played well in a men's league and his game is built on smarts and not simply dangling and being physically dominant v. his peer group.

As for my league full of p***yes comment...not one fight in any of the pre-season games for the Kings. Barely any hits to speak of as well. Call me a knuckle-dragger all you want, but my interest continues to wane as the product is not as entertaining as it used to be no matter how much you want to say it is because there are two more end-to-end rushes than before that don't wind up in a goal being scored.

I agree with that. If he stays up he needs the right partner and the only one that makes sense is DD. If they need to shelter him at times they can do so but game to game he needs to play with Drew. Even if he starts to struggle with the schedule it’s a so what, he can sit the odd game to manage his workload and we use our #7 d-man. Keeping him doesn’t mean he has to play all 82 games. Time in the AHL wouldn’t be bad for him either.

As I said before it’s all about if he has the temperament. Every indication I’ve seen says he has. However, the team who are now getting to know him, will know far better than any of us if what has been written about him actually bears out. Given that everything ever written about him seems to have glowing statements about his IQ, leadership and poise the thought of him staying up doesn’t worry me. Not in the slightest.

If Derek Forbort were 6' or 6'1 he'd be playing in the DEL, I don't even think he'd be good enough to play in the KHL. He has no qualities that really stand out at the NHL level other than his height and reach. He has no offensive skills, he isn't physical, he isn't a great skater, he isn't a defensive stopper, he isn't a heart and soul leader type. And that is fine, there are plenty of guys who used their height and reach to carve out very long bottom pairing NHL careers. But like so many others in the organization he has just been here waaaaaaaaay to long. It's not normal for franchises to hold onto bottom pairing defenders and bottom six forwards as long as the Kings have, but that is for another discussion.

It's just nice to finally have real high end prospects pushing these bad veterans and not guys like Paul LaDue and Andy Andreoff.

Good grief, of course there's a difference. Now, change the context of what Drew said about Forbort and TB and think about what he said and switch it to your wife or girlfriend talking about having sex with you. Would you prefer the Forbort comments or the TB comments? I know which praise I'd prefer. This is an easy one guys.

OK, one more post just for the record. This is too funny -- from LAKings Insider:

“I think Forbs has turned into an amazing player,” Doughty said. “I don’t know if everyone realizes how good he is at defense. He’s like amazing at defense, he really is.”

Game, set, match.

balancing the fact that it's preseason, it's probably a good sign that we've already seen guys like lizotte playing up on the 2nd line under tmac. i'm getting the impression that he's willing to try some shit compared to the wet napkins that stevens and desjardins were

Lol. You suffer from premature celebration. Dont panick though, there are many remedies that can be shipped discreetly to your front door

Still not in the ballpark of what he said about bjornborg.

More Drew on TB from The Athletic:

Doughty noted that Bjornfot was “so calm and laid back.”
“That’s the other thing,” Doughty said. “I can joke with him (on the bench) about the song that’s playing during the game or whatever. He’s just got that same mentality I have … just having fun out there but at the same time competing as hard as we can. It’s crazy.
“He just keeps getting better and better. He’s so young, so there is a chance he’ll go back, obviously. But it’s not because of how he’s played if he doesn’t make the team.”

I don't know about you all, but this is how Drew looked when he was being interviewed on Fox Sports and how these additional quotes seem to read out:
