I never liked 44 and 4 pairing. Too risky both mobile and offensive and leaves no big steady anchor to defend. It’s probably going happen anyway.
I'd be surprised if they go that route -
JoMo needs a strong defensive partner that will allow him to do his thing - Pionk is not that guy.
You now have JoMo supporting Pionk's game (IMO) - I can't see them doing that but I could be wrong - we'll see.
I'd also be surprised if we slot in an offensive dman to cover for the loss of a primarily defensive one.
It's a tough break when you lose your best defensive dman (IMO) - but to replace him with one that has the opposite strengths just doesn't sound like something a good coach would do.
It's very possible you will see our #2 LHD replaced with the #3 LHD - and that's Stan.
Lot of pressure on Stan but anyway you look at this, we will have a less than optimal top 4 any way you shake this out - and this method at least allows us to maintain the Offense / defense structure with each pairing.
And if that doesn't work, you can always make changes on the fly - especially if Ville steps up in a third pairing role and shows that he can play NHL reg season minutes with something close to a balanced game. Because we don't need more offense on our blueline after losing defensive strength.
