People love bringing Stanley in to bash him, whether it has anything to do with the op or not. I really didn't care about him either way outside of, you know, cheering for every player on our team, but all the hate around here really has me pulling for him.

Especially in the Heinola thread .............. :sarcasm:

Not trying to bash Stanley , just was giving opinion and i brought him up because that's who Heinola is trying to beat out for a spot. Really I'm one of the last people to just bash a Jet but you guys can think that if you want. :dunno:
I know you are are not trying to bash Stan - based on how you interact on this board. I don't think it is in your character.
But when you bring a player up in a discussion and all that is mentioned are the things you "think" he does poorly, you are basically bashing.
No worries - it doesn't matter - we'll know soon enough.

If Heinola shows capable my guess is the coach will go with the player who's type of game is more suited to what he needs in a given game. If he needs more quickness and puck movement then Ville goes in, if he needs more size and grit then Stanley goes in.
Agreed. I think you see Heinola, get a handful of games to get up to speed, and then the lineup set situationally. Though I could see Miller be given a few nights off and move a LHD over, maybe Heinola?

Totally agree with this post, and the situation and who we're playing, would dictate the types of players I would deploy. We sort of have 2 players that offer somewhat opposite skill sets, and you can use this to your advantage, and insert the best one, that gives you the best chance of winning, versus a particular opponent.

Special teams will have an impact too. Stanley is 3rd among defensemen in GA/60 on PK. Numbers have gone down on PK with Fleury in. Josh doesn't have great numbers either. I still think Stanley is #6 for the greater part of the year, but you can pick and choose matchups that Ville would help the team in. With Stan travelling with the team be interesting to see who gets in against the 3 most physical teams on the road trip,

I kind of feel like the Jets are wanting to play Heinola against Minnesota because a good game from him there probably shows why Chisholm was let go. Kind of a measuring stick game, and Minnesota is not overly big up front, more of a skating team.

Health will play a role as well. Neither of the two have really been able to stay healthy the last number of years.

I said it in the pgt but I'd call Ville up and go:

44 - 4
14 - 2
24/67 - 6

I really don't think anyone on the left side is strong enough to play to 4 with Pionk other than Morrissey

Probably the right call.

I never liked 44 and 4 pairing. Too risky both mobile and offensive and leaves no big steady anchor to defend. It’s probably going happen anyway.

#67 s/b 64

It will be interesting to see how this plays out.

I suspect Stanley will slot in for Samberg and Fleury/Heinola will platoon.

44 - 2
64 - 4
24/14 - 6

I'd be surprised if they go that route -
JoMo needs a strong defensive partner that will allow him to do his thing - Pionk is not that guy.
You now have JoMo supporting Pionk's game (IMO) - I can't see them doing that but I could be wrong - we'll see.

I'd also be surprised if we slot in an offensive dman to cover for the loss of a primarily defensive one.
It's a tough break when you lose your best defensive dman (IMO) - but to replace him with one that has the opposite strengths just doesn't sound like something a good coach would do.

It's very possible you will see our #2 LHD replaced with the #3 LHD - and that's Stan.
Lot of pressure on Stan but anyway you look at this, we will have a less than optimal top 4 any way you shake this out - and this method at least allows us to maintain the Offense / defense structure with each pairing.
And if that doesn't work, you can always make changes on the fly - especially if Ville steps up in a third pairing role and shows that he can play NHL reg season minutes with something close to a balanced game. Because we don't need more offense on our blueline after losing defensive strength.

If we are talking situational doesn't it make more sense to have Stan in against the Wild who usually bring a pretty tough game?

JMo Pionk
Ville DD
Fleury Miller
Ville getting 2nd pair is insanity. It's far too hard for a good player to walk in the NHL in November nevermind someone who has as little experience as Ville. If the Jets get 14 good minutes out of him it will be fortunate.

Basically this is a "Ville isn't the centre of the universe" line up. Don't break your 2 top pairing just to shoehorn him in. Lean on Morrissey and DD because we know that works. Put Fleury to with Pionk and Villie with Miller.

It would if he is ready but I don't think he is.

And now it will be interesting how the minutes get distributed. I feel like the Jets are going to want Mo to PK even less after the Samberg injury.

And Coghlan might make more than half the season without playing a game the way things are going.

I think this happens too. Because Pionk is used situationally in a defensive role. Though you saw Miller moved up with Pionk last night. But the team was pressing for offense too Hard to see Ville just easing in to 20 minutes a night after missing all of preseason and a quarter of the regular season.

My guess is the thinking is that DeMelo can insulate young players. He did a great job with Stanley, and with Snerg. So his mentorship and steadiness should help ease him in.

It might be harder for Ville to step in with a more chaotic partner in Miller. We atleast know Fleury and Miller work together.

They are likely going to have to try many different combos over the next few months.

Anyone know if Logan has even started skating again?

I get it. But what's insanity to me is Stanley playing 2nd pair... let's see what Arniel does and gp from there I guess.

May as well see what we have in Heinola. We know Fleury is a fringe NHLer. Maybe Heinola shits the bed. Why not at least see how he does? What if he does well the first game?

Honestly Stanley is probably PK1 for the period Samberg is out. He's going to get minutes, and he is definitely playing injured so that should be a concern.

Fleury is probably PK2. And he has to find his game that was good at the start if the season.

Heinola coming back may look like Perfetti missing part of TC, but worse because there is no 4 day layoffs for practice and San Jose to get up to speed. Heinola will be targeted by other teams right off the hop.

A good game in Minny will keep him in the lineup. So I guess it starts there.
