I’m only open to moving Garland because of his age and playing style. He may only have about four or so years of productive, healthy hockey left.

I’d be just as happy to give him a contract to cover the above time frame, or similar, but probably not another after that.

I think we may be overvaluing Garland a bit.
I don’t think so at all. He appears to be the closest thing we’ve had to a star forward since maybe Radim Vrbata? When the bottom fell out on this garbage team, he cooled off. But when the team was even a little decent he looked amazing. This despite playing for Rick Tocchet.

2022 1st + a B prospect from a competitor works for me. Not saying I want that, but I wouldn't be disappointed. Someone like Newhook or McMichael straight up would do it.

The reality of the salary cap era is that the team with the Newhook level player is better off keeping them in almost every instance over trying to pay a 25yo his full value.

In other words, Newhook + 4m+ in cap space > Garland.

I don't think the rest of the league is going to see it that way. If they do, then maybe we pull off a real steal by trading Garland.

This franchise has only two good things. Garland and Chychrun.

I'd say two and a half (I'm throwing Dvorak The Silent in there as the half)... at least at the moment. I think eventually Jenik will be a better asset than Garland overall, but that's not going to be for a while yet.

The problem we have is that we look through different glasses than the league does. Or don't you remember how everyone outside of State 48 was saying Tocchet should have been an Adams contender?

Trading Garland makes as much sense as trading Dvo. We lack scorers and centers. Why would we trade our best scorer and center when they are both young and home grown? We need to ADD to those guys. You take gambles with other guys that are older or topped out talent wise to bring in young centers and scorers with potential to play with those two. Unless you are packaging them in a deal for Matthews, those two and Chychrun are off limits for me.
This is absolutely spot-on. Why would we trade "core" players for basically the same skill level. This is the Coyote's, with the recent track record of draftees: Miller, Hayton, Joseph, Strome, Domi... keep what you got- Keller, Garland, Chychrun, Dvorak and move on from there. Is it that hard??

Van Ryn is going to be the next Coyotes coach IMHO.

Good luck because he was bad under Paine and needed Larry Robinson to help figure out the defense.

Larry changed the dynamics of our defense in one consultation:

It was to separate Bouwmeester and Pietrangelo. Give Bouwmeester to Parayko on the 2nd line and make it a shut down defensive pairing. Which allowed Pietrangelo to go against lesser opponents...

Take MVR, but no givies-backies.

That's exactly why drafting is so important. Through the draft is how you build a championship team, sprinkled in with a few trades etc. but everything starts at the draft table.

Garland doesn't deserve to be grouped with those other three. I'm ok with seeing those other three go if we get good value in return.

If Garland is traded, it better be a rediculous over-pay.
OEL, Kessel and Kuemper are three of our five best players. If all three are traded, it will be a rebuild, plain and simple. I'm fine with trading our stars for great value, but be prepared to be patient.

The problem is you are comparing Garland with the rest of the talent on the Coyotes. Garland is a real good talent, a second line talent or maybe first line talent depending on the team and who the other players on the line are. Love watching the kid play, and these are the kind of players we have to keep not trade. He walks the walk.

Phew. I wouldn't have hated hiring MVR but I would have been very anxious with the decision.

Exactly.

Have to think it's Nelson. The only guy to get two interviews, right?

Also imagine that if we're eliminating candidates (assuming it wasn't a thanks, no thanks from MVR) then we are not waiting around for Lambert.

The other thing with eliminating candidates is it likely means you have an extended an offer to someone else and they have accepted.
