Ok let’s say the Rangers are fully commited to a rebuild.
And let’s assume the goal is a cup.
It’s going to take 4-5 years [this season inclusive] for them to gel and hit stride, and then it will take another 2-4 years on top of that for their window,
so given how many decisions will be made, changes in league META, expansion, injuries, and the fact we are playing a ****ty team tonight,
the chances that more than 2 players on the roster tonight will be lifting the cup in our assumed window even if in that window the Rangers were guaranteed to win the cup, would be fractions of a percent at best.
none of the decisions are based solely off the game tonight, only an idiot would make long term decisions over 1 game. heres the thing i don't think you're getting...
- when you have a 23-year old defenseman with the poise, vision,
AND outright offensive talent of deangelo; especially when hes shown a
trend (indicates over many games, not just one) of figuring out the defense, you should clearly identify him as a core piece moving forward.
- identifying the weaknesses and holes a team has is not looking to far ahead, it's being smart.
- toews wasa drafted in 2006, kane in 2007. they won the cup for the first time in 2010.
- we drafted chytil in 2017, kravstov in 2018 and presumably a top end talent will be picked this year. say we follow the trajectory of the blackhawks, we have a very good chance of competing by 2022/2023.
- in 2022, kreider will be 31, zibanejad 28, buchnevich 26, skjei 27 and deangelo 26. We will have the talent surrounding our kravtsov, chytil, elite F/D to contend.
- say it takes until 2023, kreider would be a year older, 32 is older, but not too old to contribute.
- that is not counting a
possible panarin signing, andersson, our defense prospects, shestyorkin, or any other free agent signings we
may make.
i get this is going to be a long process, but we dont have to be pessimistic. theres a lot to be excited about ehre, and nothing good ever happens to anyone who is a negative nelly.
another example is pitsburgh, malkin in '04, crosby in '05, finals in '08, champions in '09. not a quick turnaround by any means, but 4/5 years isnt lightyears away. now its fairly obvious none of the players in our system currently amount to crosby/malkin, but fleury ('09) and murray ('16&'17) and niemi ('10) and crawford ('13&'16) are not the goaltenders henrik lundqvist
could* still be/ shestyorkin projects to become.
* - i know that comment will be VERY controversial, but i truly believe with an actual defense in front of him and some socring support, henrik lundqvist can be one of those goalies that stays elite into his 40's
i know as rangers fans were supposed to be negative for some reason, but having an optimistic view, as long as its in a realistic scope, is not a bad thing.
