How do we end up with another defenseman when this team is starving offensively.
The team is starving for offense because literally no offense is being generated from the point
He just turned 25 and doesn’t match the contention window ideally
So the contention window isn't within the next decade??

lol
There’s D available at 4 that could easily match Byram career wise,
And you want to spend the next 5 years waiting to see if that maybe happens?

Hawks could have a Cup by the time those kids amount to anything
we still don’t know if Sternberg will drop
He's literally not getting past Vancouver

He probably goes to SJ, but if he doesn't it's already confirmed that's who Vancouver wants

How is it that this move inspires confidence? Anyone can make a trade if you just step up and offer the moon and the stars for a guy not worth that. Of course they would accept.

Confidence is inspired by making good value moves that also improve the roster. Not paying through the nose just to make sure you don’t have FOMO.
Bingo. Part of the timing on getting aggressive should’ve been taking advantage of market opportunities.

Trading a top 5 pick for a guy that was worth Casey Mittelstadt 2.5 years ago is buying at peak value

My major issue with it is how is an extension not already announced?
Kyle is prepping the Bedard + Byram press conference

With more PP time and more ice time, hard to believe that wont happen.
why? what makes it easier to believe he plays better in harder minutes with worse teammates? i can understand feeling you have reason to believe he can succeed. i can't understand this blanket pronouncement that he is basically fated to.

A couple more things;

The Hawks made this trade without an extension in place. This means that Bowen Byram's agent now has all the leverage in the world for negotiations. He can point to the trade capital to get him and say "Hey, we know you view Byram as a 1D, so we want to get paid like a 1D. We want a 14 mil x 8 deal". They can also say Byram wants to feel out the team this season as the PP1 guy to increase his value and leave through free agency if he doesn't like the outlook of the future.

The funny thing is, KD basically has to agree to an extension or he will be getting canned. You cannot trade those significant assets for a 1 year rental

Probably because he is a great 5 on 5 player. He will be getting more 5 on 5 time, and far more PP time than he was in Buffalo.

This trade makes sense to me. You get a defenseman that you hope the #4 pick turns into that is already seasoned and fits our time line better. He can step in and lead our young defense while they continue to develop.

I think the other pieces are mostly inconsequential.

This is a weird draft where there's not a huge difference mid first and early 2nd. There's also the possibility of some huge fallers that you could package our 2nds and jump up if need be. I don't know, I like this draft better than most and I'm fine trading the picks.

the question was why will he do better, and you answered he will because he's great. you aren't saying anything at all.

There's a bit of contrast

He has has hard minutes, he will likely get less hard minutes. Hes always had to PK more than teammates like Dahlinmatches. He PKed for the Avs a decent amount too. If it's Byram, Vlasic, and Kaiser at LD... Byram should PK less than those both and now get more PP. He was carrying Owen Power as a younger partner developing already experiencing that.

Vlasic is now in a great position with a LD above him to be the hard matched 2nd pair LD. So Byram isnt likely taking harder matchups.

I think there needs to be a situation of hating the player add vs hating the trade value/contract worry.

I just think he's a damn good player with a great toolbox. Young Dmen who have performed well typically get better with age, and I dont see any reason why Byram can't as well. I dont have all the answers as to why he will better, just a belief I have because I like him as a player. Is that ok or do I need to lay out stats and break down every aspect of his game to satisfy you?

You're only saying this today because it takes years for a defenseman to mature - super bold take bro
Bedard is this rebuild. We don't have another 5yrs for this #4 pick to maturate. I am good with the trade. The only problem I will have is if they do not sign an extension. I couldn't imagine KD would make the trade without that.

yes, you have my permission to like the player if that's what you were looking for. there is no burden of proof involved with saying that you like a guy's game. that's very different from responding to someone else questioning the value of the trade for him by saying it's unbelievable that he doesn't emerge as a legitimate top defender.
