Confirmed with Link: Hawks aquire Bowen Byram and Jordan Greenway for 4th overall, 45th overall, and Crevier

  • If you are having issues logging in, we have found opening the log in page in a new tab/window rather than using the pop out should resolve these issues. We are working to get this resolved and thank you for patience.
  • Due to the increased volume of league transactions, the Trade Rumors and Free Agent Talk section is temporarily restricted to where threads may only be started by moderators and sponsors. We anticipate that this restriction will be lifted some time after the first round of the draft.
My early takeaway so far from outsider reactions.

Media types and stat watchers (not you, @statswatcher) think Chicago got fleeced.

People who actually work in hockey or have played the game seem to like the deal.

Craig button loves it. (Not sure how to feel about that…)

it's just bad value, plain and simple.

I was irked by the value when I 1st heard about it. I didn't want to trade the 4th. But you have to give to get. If you want a top pair D than something of good value has to go the other way.

Didn't we get the 45th pick for taking Josh Bailey's contract? Crevier was a good soldier and a fine 3rd pair but he's not a needle mover. We already have 2 players who are just like him in Kaiser and Vlasic.

The overpay was the 45th and Crevier. Something we got for free and something we had an abundance of. I'm fine with that if that's what it took to out bid 10 other teams and fill our biggest weakness.

that is exactly 100% the question though. is he a 1D? just being top pair doesn't even cut it in my view, but either way. the fact of the matter is that no one on the face of the planet knows whether or not he's either of those things because he has never been that. that's why the value isn't there to justify it today. this time next year, could be looking at a totally different scenario. right now, it's a reach.

Don't like the deal still after sleeping on it but no choice but to make peace with it now. Here's hoping Byram flourishes in an expanded role. Still not a fan of paying a 1D price for a guy you're hoping turns into a 1D.

How do you acquire talent as a non-"destination" team (shitty team, high tax state, etc) in an exploding cap world that almost every team has cash to burn and good players don't get to UFA? I think the paradigm on trade value has shifted....look at what Nemec and Kyrou cost yesterday and honestly at first blush say the cost was "reasonable".

We could keep drafting players (which I honestly would have preferred sucking one more year going into a good '27 draft) and waiting a couple years for them to reach the NHL and then a couple more to develop into what they might be (if we get the projecting what an 18 year old might be correct), or we took a swing.

The choice of BPA at #4OA was going to be a D (and other than Smits who we weren't taking there...sorry Musto) which again, is 2-3 years to get to the NHL and another 2 or 3 to develop into what they MIGHT be (Schaefer wasn't coming in this draft nor many), I guess we could have traded down....and taken a lesser D with as long or longer of a runway or reached on a F who likewise is still a ways off from helping.

I don't love it, but 4OA may turn into Byram in 3 or 4 years (or may not) and the rest of Crevier, a year of Wirtz paying Greenway and #45 are 3 quarters when you need a dollar.

Did any of you guys watch the CHGO podcast last night? I don't get Jay Zawaski.

For months he has been saying that this off season is make or break for Davidson. That he needs to upgrade the roster. That this team can't go into next season with an all young Defense. Saying things like KD has never landed a big fish. That he offered Guentzel a contract but he choose Tampa.

There were 3 D available this off season that the whole league knew about. Nemec, Raddysh and Byram. KD trades for Byram and Zawaski goes ballistic. His head was red. How can he get that upset over a little overpay after demanding KD upgrade the roster at all costs?
Yeah Greg Boysen of all people was being the voice of reason. That’s when you know you’re in the wrong.

lol @ people saying they didn't acquire a Quinn Hughes or a Cale Makar (or #1 D man), well NO SHIT!

People realize to get that type of Dman would have cost the #4, next years 1st unprotected, and another massive piece on top of that, right? lol You can't have your cake and eat it too. These are the costs of these players. Look at what Nemec went for, and he isn't even close to the player Byram is.

Guys if you're a western hockey person maybe you dislike this deal. And if Stenberg falls to 4, yes, I'd say you can cry to the heavens. But otherwise? The stuff we saw him do in the playoffs was truly scary at times when he joins the rush. Not many have his tool box.

Byram is ridiculous when you surround him with high end talent. He's JUST entering his prime. A PP with guys like Bedard, Frondell and Byram is a very scary proposition.

If the comp is truly Chase Reid vs Byram, I think it's close. But Byram can be a blueline leader for you NOW. Your fanbase deserves a playoff hunt, and you're going to be that much closer to one. Byram is one of the 15 young D I'd most want on my team today, and you got him.

As for Greenway, he can play the third line (he has that ceiling for sure), and he instantly makes your team harder to play against.

Personally I think you overpaid by the #45 pick at most. The next big drop off in this draft is around #40, so whatever. It's far from the end of the world.

He doesn't have to be anything close to Keith. A Dman like Keith would have taken 10x as much to acquire than a 4th overall pick and a couple minor pieces.
i don't think he has to be keith. i think he has to be better than he's ever been with more responsibility.

I like consuming Hawks content and I watch that show. But Jay is just a meathead pudwhack. He comes up with something in his head and just keeps beating a dead horse about it. Greg and Mario were being the voice of reason for this, and they were correct. If the Sharks would of made this trade, EVERYONE would of had pitchforks.

Ask me what bleach tastes like

How do we end up with another defenseman when this team is starving offensively.

There’s D available at 4 that could easily match Byram career wise, we still don’t know if Sternberg will drop.

He just turned 25 and doesn’t match the contention window ideally, is a UFA at the end of his contract in a year. Left handed which affects Vlasic EDM Korch Kaiser in the depth chart

First impression is I like Byram but this is just unfortunate.

This is the first move Kyle has made that genuinely inspires confidence

Hope they keep coming

Robertson offer sheet at the very least should happen

Kantserov-Bedard-Robertson
Frondell-Byram

I mean, just look at that power play

Need Kantserov to hit Panarin level upside

How is it that this move inspires confidence? Anyone can make a trade if you just step up and offer the moon and the stars for a guy not worth that. Of course they would accept.

Confidence is inspired by making good value moves that also improve the roster. Not paying through the nose just to make sure you don’t have FOMO.

Noah Dobson is a better player than Byram. What’d he go for?
