Have the 'scary' version of the Devils arrived?

I wouldn't say "scary" per se. They've still got a lot of ways to go before key players are proven in the playoffs to be truly intimidating.

But they are a good team and their defence seems like it's slowly starting to be turned over to some players who can be trusted more in tight defensive playoff battles. They've still got some potential failure points that are hard to trust until they really prove they can get it done.

The Grit thing..the NJD leads league in fights and 7th most hits per 60. Not the be all/end all. But throwing the body and gloves when they need to. They also are undefeated after 40 when in the lead. So far, seeing them bend but not break.

They don't need anymore grit. In fact, I would say if they need anything, its another skilled middle 6er

Noesen, Meier, Dillon, Kovacevic, Cotter, Bastian, etc is more than enough "grit"

Part of me wants Kreider since he's such a beast in the playoffs, Just tell him to get healed up for the playoffs.

Speedy, and talented. Still think that they lack grit.
Grit has been added to the recipe and it's got folks here that root for jerseys team pretty excited and full of optimism. Anything can happen in the playoffs good or bad but, this franchise is on a good course. They have been shutout 5X already this season. Hopefully that is out of their system going forward. If not they can have a great all around team only to be goalied home to an early exit. See Carolina... Anyway LGD!

Does blocking a shit ton of shots count as grit?

So far they have been spooky at times, but never a serious threat. Right now they set out to embarass the Rangers while they are down, and so far are accomplishing it. Jack Hughes himself has seemed to take the last season losses and Trouba/Rempe-led headshots personally, and is out to score 1 or 2 every game against them.

Spooky Devils teams in the last 2 years have had their moments, but then got their Halloween costume ripped off their face by a more experienced Canes team before really succumbing to injuries and craptastic goaltending the next year.

Are Devils now officially graduated to a "scary" team? Is Markstrom's steadiness the key? Today's mission was to demoralize and potentially torpedo the Rangers entire season, and so far it is working.

Once they got their goalie--many of us on this site said they would have a good year

Until the devil's get someone like B. Tkachuk or Tom Wilson, that forward group isn't scarying anyone.
Meier is no Wilson but one of the heavy top6 wingers in the league.

With Dillon, Bastian, Noesen, Palat, Cotter, Lazar they got quiet a few gritty players. MacDermid brings the fists for the playoffs. Even Sigi and Dougie. They re not nasty but strong.

And than there s speed. Plenty off it. If you ve seen the how Bratt throws his body or Nico/Jack get under the skin with their play styles. I see them well balanced and pretty nasty ...

Their reputation on fan side might be different. But I bet players would disagree.

I think the biggest issue with the Devils will be Keefe's inability to adjust in the playoffs.

Also why I think the Leafs will make it farther this year.

Nothing scary about a non-playoff team.

the Devils have the 2nd most points in the league. It is your opinion that they are going to miss the playoffs?

Yes they do. Their forward group is soft as butter

No, they are not. Not anymore. Seems like you haven't watched them much this year.

Noesen, Cotter, Meier, Bastian, etc is more than enough 'grit' among forwards.

We'll see if they will stay in the playoffs

they have 49 points in 37 gp (1.32 ppg)

to get to 95 points, they'd only need 46 points in their final 45 games played

it would take one of the most epic collapses in NHL history for the Devils to completely miss the playoffs

You misunderstood me, it's highly likely they will make the playoffs, i'm talking about if they will make a Maple Leaf-like collapse.

At the end of the day, you'll need your grit from the Nico Hischier, Jack Hughes, Jesper Bratt class of forwards in the heat of battle. Any playoff matchup will just focus their muscle on putting the hurt on the first three. If those guys bring it under that level of duress, you're set. If you're relying on the window dressing variety from the support it probably won't work out.

Between their skill up front and Jacob Markstrom's ability to look like Freddy Andersen under pressure, the chances are New Jersey isn't getting out of the East.
