Peak Sid had 37 in 22 before going down to injury, and peak Malkin at the end of same season had 36 in 22

Now Drai has 41 in 21 and McDavid has 37 in 21

Nostalgia on HF heavily will favor peak Sid/Geno in a poll, but what is the actual story? Have McDrai passed them?

Not a fan of Sidgeni Crolkin?

37 and 36 in 22 in that era was more impressive than 41 and 37 in 21 is today.

Look at where Crosby and Malkin ranked relative to their peers in points per game: NHL.com - Stats

Now compare that to Draisaitl and McDavid right now: NHL.com - Stats

Also consider that Crosby and Malkin were far stronger defensively and proved themselves as elite playoff performers as well.

Most importantly, they didn't play with each other.

Here you try to add context but then you completely ignore the fact that the current Oilers team is worse than than the Pittsburgh team.

Except Drai has only been great for slightly over a year. How would that surpass peak Sid and Geno who won tons of hardware? Plus while the Pens were better, they didn’t have as good of line mates.

When did Sid and Geno have a GM as stupid as Chiarelli?

The Oilers had Barzal sitting in their lap and Taylor Hall in the bank already ... that's not on the players that their supporting cast got crippled by poor management for 4 summers. The organization can now begin to recover, having already shed the Lucic albatross right off the bat.

They're showing this year if you give them even half way decent goaltending and a decent PK what they can do with just that, if Holland adds even one good second line winger as the seasons goes along ... look out.

I am not saying that the Oilers duo is better than the Pittsburgh duo, I am saying that his example is flawed. It is good to add context but you have to consider every factor and not cherry pick one variable.

I'd be willing to take this up for discussion once the Oil has won a cup. To be honest, Pittsburgh's cup winning teams weren't much more well-rounded than the teams the Oilers ice. But Sidney and Geno went for the W, Gordon Bombay style.

In 2009 the Pens 3rd line was Cooke - Staal - Kennedy and in 2016 it was Hagelin - Bonino - Kessel. What's the Oilers current 3rd line? Heck, what's the Oilers current 2nd line?

Not to mention they played on seperate lines and posted those numbers. Not sure how far Edmonton will ever get as a one line team if that's the route they go.
