Well, as seen from the posh seats, for once, this was a fun but oddly subdued game, with some standout moments. Liked Kuli, Apples, Trouba, Copp, Little, around 60% of ChiaPet, most of Lemmy, all of Rosie, enjoyed watching the Condor take wing again, Thought Helly went figuratively to sleep on 2 of his 3 goals and literally on one of them, would buy Mp85 a beer for fighting hooks and sticks all game long if I knew him socially, and set Lowry up with a massage. Also, @NoMorrow.

My wife, who is not Canadian and often bewildered by our ways, including but not restricted to swallowing the final consonants of words like "water," socials, Par-T boats and ice hockey, enjoyed the game but said something about Laine that seemed spot on to me. "In the game we were at last year," quoth she, "Laine was magnetic. He was all over the ice, making plays and rushing with the puck -- you couldn't take your eyes off him. Tonight I only noticed him when he fell over."

There is something wrong with this kid. He is playing so tentatively, bobbling pucks, giving up on plays, rushing some shots and taking forever with others. He looks like a totally different player, and we know how dominant he can be. If I'm PoMo/Chevy, I am making an appointment with the best sports psych team in town in the comfiest sauna in town. He is too important a player -- and too great a kid -- to let slide any further. It really looks like he doesn't want to be playing hockey right now.

  • Well... that was a game. Hoosli started it with the powerful anthems and it was all Jets from there. Can't even really do a line-by-line analysis since the Jets were just kind of "whatever" after the sixth goal. Anaheim didn't look mentally or physically prepared at all - probably in part because of the all-star and player's break, but oof, even Gibson couldn't do anything about it. Generally all the Jets played well, the only statistical red (barring Hellebuyck, whom we'll talk about later) was Lowry's line, in which I believe they just took Connor-Scheifele-Wheeler's shifts late in the second and third (Scheifele had 5 shifts while Lowry had 7 in the third period; their linemates equal) against more competition.
  • If there's an obvious recipe for success in scoring goals in the NHL, it was made pretty obvious tonight:

All but one 5v5 goal tonight came within your "home plate" of the goaltender's area. Neither goalie had a lot of chances or opportunities to make a save or get into position for the second effort. That is a great showing from a team whom I recall early last year had a lot of difficulty getting to the centre of the ice - this game is a return to form to the giants we saw heading into the playoffs.
  • The PP1 has stalled, but the PP2 scored 3 goals all off of quick passes to Roslovic in the slot or just above. While not complete passes across your "royal road", the two quick passes to the middle they still made the goaltender move laterally and Roslovic was pinpoint tonight. If you're a reader of The Athletic, you would already know how Roslovic's first goal game to be. Props to Murat for pointing out the creativity in Roslovic's long way around the ice to get behind the defensemen as the rest of the Jets try to clear the middle - it was a setup!
  • Fourth line was simply all over the Ducks in the first period almost to a point where it looked like Carlyle had no idea what the heck happened. They seemingly won every puck battle along the board and had clear lanes to the front of Gibson - like, props to Lemieux for the awareness to go to the wraparound, but uh, what's Anaheim's plan for defending here? I know they often leave Gibson out to dry but this was especially bad.
  • If Hellebuyck made one more save he probably would have gotten less flak tonight. I think he got even more because of the commentator's choice to point out how he handled the puck around the net on the third goal - many can and should admit that yes he did flub the pass to Chiarot, but his pass to Myers was perfectly fine but Myers flubbed it even harder and Chiarot had a miserable effort in clearing his guy in front of the net. Not surprised that the next time we saw Hellebuyck behind the net with the puck he just cleared it out of the zone himself. While I have no idea the quick calls and talk between he and his defenders make on the ice, there's some miscommunication going on and he showed his frustration when risked shooting the puck over the glass just to deal with it himself.
    • The second goal was a traditional once-a-game-breakaway that he was still too much in his net on and gave too much space, and the first goal started in transition because the refs weren't going to call an obvious interference on Little that led to a 3-on-2 (out of all three goals, the first one is probably the one he "should have had" the most).
Chief's final eyetest says: brb, putting the Hoosli Ukranian Male Chorus on my workout pump-up playlist.

EDIT: Oh, another point. How to solve Laine's slump? I dunno, but first thing first is to stop letting it get to his head. I know he's a superstar in this league, but Jets media team should cut back on any interviews or appearances for the next little bit and just give him time to breathe.

I missed the exciting period but was getting messages from everybody "you seeing this?!" type messages so I knew it was either really good or really bad. I saw one message "6-0!" and I was like wow that was a really good game... then I was like wait.

With Brossoit in net --we win this game 9-1.

With Helle in net-- we win this game 9-3

Seems that Helle cannot keep his focus for a full 60 minutes, and in tight games, we can't afford to be giving up "soft goals."

Why does it matter how many he lets in when you score 9? In a closer game I'm sure he'll do what's necessary.

I just finished watching the game.

I am a bit disappointed, as I wanted to see the Jets get to double digits in goals for this game.

Otherwise, George Jetson is quite pleased.

Your right -- it doesn't really matter in a game like this. I've just been noticing he's been letting in these soft goals in his last 3-4 outings this year , and really throughout the year. You can get away with this in the regular season, but in the playoffs against real good teams--that play just won't cut it.

He has some real good games now and then --I'd just like to see him be more consistent like he was last year. Right now I like Brossoit's play a lot better.

Wow....just ...wow..

Goaltender complaints after a 9-3 win.

We have officially lost all perspective or have run out of things to talk about.

No complaints about this game at all - wouldn't matter if it was 9-6 --what matters is we won. My point was really about Helle's play in general --looks a bit shaky at times this year, and at other times he looks great, like in the Boston game.

Would like to see a little more consistency, because when we play teams like Tampa, Toronto, NYI, and the Capitals-- we'll need it. I hope it's coming.

I'd like (don't care if) him to be shaky in the games where there is more leeway like tonight and rock solid in games where it's close and we are in a tight one goal game. If his percentage is 67% when we are scoring 5 + goals and 99% in close games I'd be happy. Pretty much I don't care about total numbers, I just care about wins.

Goaltending is a position so dominated by variance that it's virtually impossible to get consistent results, even more so than other positions.

Hellebuyck was almost exactly the same goalie in this game as he was against Boston. Mistakes bit him more here.

At the end of the day, the takeaways in goaltending were A. Hellebuyck still struggles to play the puck behind the net -- though his last one was a HUGE improvement, and B. He seems to lose the net on occasion on breakaways. Video will deal with both of these mistakes, whose impact is measurable in a total of a few goals a year. "Hellebuyck made more than zero mistakes and his one-game SV% was below X, so he was a disaster" is some Mr. Burns level of sports manager thinking.
