Has Mike Sullivan Been Fired Yet?

In 2014 that was the 1st time I've ever openly rooted against Team USA.

I might have to revisit this approach for the 4 Nations.
 
I think we should hire Mitch Love as coach. He’s had success everywhere and he’s at least a small part of the Caps hitting way above their weight class the last 2 years. He looks like either a grizzled prospector or a serial child killer in inter-war Berlin. Either bodes well.

I think he's done at the end of the year. Seriously. It needs to and it makes sense.

I don't think it'll happen in season. For one, if the US flames out of the Four Nations Tournament under Sullivan, it'd be added ammunition (and the US may decide to go for a different coach for the Olympics, too).

Two, Dubas can pitch FSG on the idea that he took time to reflect and analyze the current state of the franchise, and that as much as they respect Sullivan, the team needs a different voice, yada yada yada. We all know these things often need to be sold to decision makers, and the offseason is the best time to do that. Dubas will probably need to sell the core on the change, too, especially Sid.

Three, Dubas can try to convince Sullivan to step down on his own. If the US does well, Dubas could try to convince Sullivan that juggling the two responsibilities is too much, and that he'd be able to focus on the Olympics and then get a fresh start with an NHL team the following spring.

Four, Dubas will want a full coaching search. This isn't about firing a coach to wake up a stumbling Cup contender. It's about finding the right voice in the room for now and the future.

1) If the US does well, though, it will give them more ammunition to say "See?!?! He IS a good coach!"

2) Fingers crossed.

3) No way. That egomaniac will think he can do both. He'll never step down.

4) He can still do that if he fired Sullivan today. Just name Vellucci the interim HC and do a full search in the offseason.

I'd also say the next coach doesn't need to be, and probably shouldn't be, the coach that will still be here when they are ready to compete again. Hire a guy with the intention of having him here for 3-5 or so years (like a normal NHL coaching stint), see Crosby and Malkin off, maybe stick around for a year or 2 while you tank/build, and then hire the next HC as the guy that will turn things around.

Playing physical is for other teams.

honest question for people who think Sullivan is a good coach: do you actually like the kind of hockey we are playing now? Not what we played 10 years ago. The kind of hockey we play now, this very minute?

There's only one kind of hockey this team should be playing.

"Losing Hockey"

The other teams all lost hard when they were down and out and reaped the benefits.

They can do this and keep Crosby a PPG player. There's no need to have a playoff streak record like in the past. There would have been no shame in sucking when the core was down and out those couple years.

Is that the kind of hockey people want to see?

Scrub hockey..... without a purpose at all times?

Yeah, they play like hot little wussies. As long as it leads to top 5 picks these next couple of drafts.

Sid isn’t going to be a PPG player much longer when other teams know they can cross check him in the back of the neck and his teammates won’t bat an eye.

He only needs this year to gain the record, after, who cares.

Not that I even really care he does it at all. All the promise of chasing points and individual records went out back when Steckel and Hedman hit Crosby and he lost two years' worth.
