I believe he has. Would love to hear why he hasn’t. When you look at what he inherited the results havnt been good enough. Not many GMs begin their tenure with 3 game breaking offensive talents including a guy who at the time was widely viewed as the second most valuable asset in the league all on their ELC and Rielly on an amazing contract.

This should be his final year if we have any accountability in the organization.

If we disappoint again it should be a huge culture change change core pieces moved and a major retool initiated by a new GM/President and Coach

Hopefully that isn't the case and we make to ECF at minimum

It'll be an insane turnover if Dubas and Shanahan are canned. The Leafs' front office is lousy with Dubas loyalists over MLSE lifers. They'll all have to go too.

A trip to the ECF this year was probably the difference of Tavares falling down one second later.

Sure, he’s not the first GM that has failed here and he won’t be the last
I guess I just don't see it as a total failure that he has yet to turn a non-winning team into a winning team. If he can't do it before he loses his job, then absolutely. GMs are supposed to be judged on their entire tenure, and we haven't seen that yet though

Nah I can't see us making the ECF with JT playing. We had the Habs dead and ready to be put away without JT. We're up 3-1 and then proceeded to choke heavily.

JT isn't a playoff performer either so doubt he'd put an outstanding performance and power us to a win in any of those games. He would impact Nylander negatively and bring down his points this series as Nylander had a hot run of chemistry with Kerfoot and Galchenyuk

Marner and Matthews had to win us 1 of the 3 games and close the series and both failed to do. We would have made it deep this year if those 2 guys showed out and produced at an expected level for players of their caliber but both failed to do their jobs.

Outsiders perspective? Yes he has

1. Overpaid Marner and Matthews by 2-4 mill combined per year. That's a middle pair D in salary
2. Immediately reset the team's salary structure giving Tavares $11m a year. Tavares was not a need, but rather a luxury
3. As a result of the 2 above, he has forced a cap hell where the team has no depth because there's no space to pay them.

#3 is an issue you see with teams after they win Cups. Issue is Dubas gave out giant contracts like candy to you ELC players without having the Cup(s) under his belt.
I agree he overpaid Marner. Tavares actually took a discount to come here and with Matthews my issue is the term of the contract.

I was actually ok with the moves last season. This team had the best roster on paper in the Canadian division. But I don’t think he has improved the team at all going into next season, in fact I think it is worse. I don’t think anybody can say that this team is better or better equipped to win a single round. For that, I think I will give him a fail grade.

Should they have won a playoff series before he got the GM job?

Should they ?? year #1 under Lou - #8 seed vs #1 President's trophy winner ?? No. Year #2 under Lou - #3 vs #2 in Atlantic. They were close so maybe.

Year #3 under Dubas, choke in games 6 and 7. Year #4 choke vs CBJ. Year #5 under Dubas, choke vs Habs.

So you're saying that he improved the team from 1st round underdog to 1st round favourite?

Well they barely squeaked by us without JT, JT wouldn’t have had to do much to make the difference. We were deflated in that game 1 loss not even knowing if JT was gonna make it through the night. It messed up our line chemistry and we didn’t have a proper 2nd line center replacement for him, they even tried Foligno at center

Many markets would kill to have a team that can make the playoffs every year. It sucks that they don't get very far into the playoffs, but you guys need to keep things in perspective.

Sure, but they don't give out participation trophies.
The players we have can’t get it done when it matters the most. If Dubas wants to stand by them stubbornly, well, he will lose his job over it. Shanahan can go too.

But Tavares still wasn't needed when he signed. That cap space was better suited elsewhere (like defense) and he cost himself more cap space by ensuring Matthews/Marner would have higher contract demands. He had a team of elite young players, you surround them with middle 6/2nd pair vets

Tavares overall probably cost the team $15m in cap space per year
