I believe that both Nemeth (cap space) and Lundkvist (trade) are gone giving Jones and Schneider an opportunity next year.

This feels like the more probable situation. Jones' trade value doesn't go up in the AHL, but Lundqvist's does in the NHL. Having Jones develop in the AHL feels like a longer term plan to keep him around, and maybe keep his next contract a little lower so he wont need a big deal until the cap starts going up again.

Also, far more opportunity on the left side then the right.

This may be unpopular here but I think nils might be the better defensive player right now. There times where Jones looked uninspired on the defensive side of things.

There are people here who said Huska is a better goalkeeper than Georgiev, so I wouldn't pay too much attention on what is popular or unpopular.

Miller has the reach and strength to do that and even then he gets burned with that style of defending. Jones absolutely can't afford to do that.

Jones has much better instincts and quickness, so it won't be as much of an issue for Jones.

not true. Most said they see the talent in Huska and wanted to give him a chance.
He did himself no favors in that game, but after the 1st, the team didn’t really help him out either. They were likely tired on the 2nd of back to backs going up against a good Avs team.
Poor kid was probably nervous facing 40 shots with a team that was gassed the night before.
I was hoping he’d at least get another opportunity, but that doesn’t look likes it’s happening soon

This is my speculation as well.
NYR obviously like Big D that can skate hit and move the puck ( shocker, every team does). The mandate was to be harder to play against.
Schneider coming up to 3rd pair next season is very likely.
It would be good to have at least 1 season of him playing sheltered behind Fox and Trouba on RD.
Especially watching and playing, and practicing with Trouba should that be the eventual role he fills.
Long term, I think Drury and co would love a cornerstone top 4 of
1st pairing
Miller/Robertson/Lindgren-Fox— ( dependable top 4 D that moves the puck well, is smart, and enhances Fox s best attributes. Adding more size to that pair wouldn’t hurt, but you don’t want too big of a dip from Lindgrens abrasive steady play. Both are 23-24. I doubt they mess up a proven battle tested pair unless they absolutely have to for financial reasons. It’s like Lindy-Fox are telepathic to one another on the ice. Hard to find that kind of chemistry)
2nd pairing
Miller/Robertson/Lindgren-Schneider—( here I’m wagering they hope Miller keeps making strides into becoming a top 4 2-way D with more of an offensive flair to his game. He’s gotten more physical this season, and I expect that to continue as he matures and gets more comfortable with the NHL speed of the game. Having 2 twin towers that are very good skaters, both can shoot and move the puck well could be a nightmare pairing for a long long time. Then you add in Schneider’s physicality and ability to drill people in open ice or along the wall. Yikes. Talk about a D pair that could eat heavy minutes and take the pressure off the Fox pairing. Massive potential to have that with these 2 kids if all goes well and keeps progressing).

a lot of beef, but all guys can move the puck and all are very mobile.
Maybe Jones-Schneider grow together as a pair for years?? But if Miller hits his ceiling, a Miller-Schneider pair would be pretty amazing and over a lot of ice.

I always thought Robertson would be an ideal partner for Fox.
A bigger more mobile Lindgren with better puck skill, though being a tad less physical.
Uses his body and stick more like Staal then Lindgren/Girardi.

especially on A team like ours, the 3rd pair will be made up a a rookie breaking in and likely a cheap vet that’s dependable to guide him and have someone to lean on thru the tough times of his first year. Much like the Nemeth-Lundkvist dynamic.
But by the time the top 4 situation shown above irons itself out, I’d wager the guys that would play 3rd pair for that unit aren’t in our system/team, and haven’t been signed or drafted yet.

So why did Jones not make the team? I dont see why Jones and Lundkvist couldn’t both make the Rangers.
If they’re going to play on the same pair - and I can’t see them breaking up the other two pairs - I think they needed Lundkvist, who has the higher ‘stay at home’ potential, to shape up his defensive game. (Could have done that in the A, of course, but they decided to do it this way; I suspect there is some politics there).
Either way, I think they needed Nils to get comfortable before pairing them. But I’d say it happens and maybe soon.

If they were matched up on 3rd pairing together, it wouldn’t likely go to well.
Nils in all likelihood hood will be the better 2-way defender, even if they are similar at this point. I think Jones likes to carry the puck more, but both like to get involved offensively.
Mainly Jones-Lundkvist would be overmatched and exposed physically.
If I’m the opposing coach, I’d have my 3rd and 4th lines continually pound them on dump ins and keep hitting them every chance they get. Having 2 undersized rookies would produce a lot of giveaways/mistakes in that kind of environment. I have similar concerns of a Miller-Lundkvist pairing. Though miller adds size to the pair, they’re playing styles don’t really mix well for my taste. I don’t think that experiment would go well at all.
Jones-Schneider makes a whole lot more sense from a style standpoint. It also has one guy on each side that makes up for each other’s weaknesses and enhances their strengths.
Schneider in a more stay at home, physically imposing role and Jones the PMD, more offensive guy that likes to carry the puck more.
Both are very mobile and both are good at passing the puck. As far as an all Rookie pair would go, I think those 2 would do well if they lean on each other.
They are also getting a lot of time together in the A this year, which will be very beneficial Next season.
Similar to how Lindgren-Fox has a history playing well together.
I also wouldn’t be opposed to a Schneider-Lundkvist or Lundkvist-Schneider pair either.
If 1 doesn’t mind playing their offside. I think stylistically that pair can also work, only thing is they are both Right handed.
Adding the size is a Huge plus to any pair. Bigger is def better in that regard but more importantly, the pairs have to have chemistry together in their styles of play.
Lindgren-Fox doesn’t have a lot of size, but style wise they click beautifully and make each other better.
Miller-Trouba is getting better each game. Miller is getting more confident in the offensive side of his game.
I think Jones/Lundkvist would also have success paired with Trouba because he’s welcomed that more stay at home role.
Yes he occasionally joins the rush and pinches, but for the most part, he’s become a defense 1st Defender.

I kinda wish K and Nils could have some time Pack because of Steve Smith

Miller has progressed this year so he doesn't need time in the AHL.

Sure he's had a few bumpy moments, but his overall game is much better and he's improving. People forget he's already this good, very ahead of schedule, and has only been an NHLer since January 2021.

But there's also no downside except the perceived "disrespect"
My post was that Steve Smith, having had a different career arc and strengths than Murphy, could contribute to their development.
But guys like Chytil, Kreider, Buch and DelZ cycled thru some AHL time after NHL time, no downside to that for 79 or 27

Watching a game for the first time in a bit. Team is not playing with the same jump and cohesiveness as it did prior to the COVID stoppage.

For some reason, Zac Jones isn't playing tonight. Injury? Covid? Call up?

Lauri P made a strong play for their first goal. He's the best player on the ice for HFD so far in the game.

Wall made a bunch of decent saves early. But his rebound control is really going to need to work if he wants to sniff the next level. The second goal was partially his fault, but I think he got tripped by an opposing player. Still, he mishandled the puck a bit which led to the turnover.

4-2 end of 2. Sloppy period by HFD. I'm really only liking Pujaniemi's game. And Khodorenko. Possibly Tinordi. But the team is really lackluster. Barron's having an off night. But in general, there's nothing crisp to their game. They really miss Jones it seems. But it's also possible the team is rusty. They've had 5 power plays and have one PPG to show for it.

Khodorenko is quietly having a really nice season.
