Good post but a lot of this Still reads a lot like lias isn’t playing with good enough players and that’s why he can’t put up pts. We gave him this excuse in the NHL we’re going to give it to him playing top line mins in the A too? A half a point per game in the A as top line center is reason for optimism?

Fogarty is a heck of an AHL player. He should be able to put up pts with him.

Speaking of Fogarty I agree he should be called up in place of Nieves. He’s earned it. Great game from him last night he’s been very good.
Was fogarty the only one that stood out for you?

yes mostly he’s been very good

Keane did too but he was sloppy

Lettieri looks uninterested this year. Like he knows he dropped off the depth chart and is going thru the motions more than fighting to get back. I mean kid had a ton of chances and was awful here.

Unfortunately this was the risk with sending Lias down. And it was the right move to send him down

At the NHL level at least you could point to the some excuses for his lack of production. But now that he's in the AHL and played well there previously, he has to do well, or his value goes into the toilet

I hope he can pick it up, but I just foresee the Rangers moving on from him sooner rather than later

I know, its "excuses", no ifs and buts about it. And preferably you shouldn't have to make those. But I think its important to take them into consideration. Just like its important to take into consideration like just how the stars are aligning for Nils Lundkvist in the SHL right now, i.e. by the stats we could expect a guy that could be a future Norris Candidate, but that isn't really reflected by his play that is -- great -- but he is far from dominating.

But a few more things on Lias. He will put up pts in the AHL, but not a PPG. Last season, only 4 players in the AHL put up more than 70 pts. Only 20 players put up more than 60 pts, and since a few teams had 2-3 guys in the top 20, only 16 teams of 31 had one single player that scored more than 60 pts. They play what 76 games?

The AHL is not a high scoring league. And -- especially -- not when you look at 5 on 5 scoring. Looking at the top 20 in scoring, only 4 of them had more than .7 in Even-Strength Points per game, and MOST have less than .6 ESP/game.

It won't take a ton for prospect to "not" score a PPG down there.

I don't see it as a risk.

I just think that you must do all the right things and be patient with these kids. They take time, and some will take longer than others.

What we cannot forget, and what I tried to emphasize in my first post, is that Lias -- compared to say someone like Vinny Lettieri -- have totally different conditions to end up playing in a top 9 in the NHL. You cannot have a player in the NHL, outside of a 4th line maybe, that isn't smart with the puck, that doesn't see the ice or can keep it within the team. Lias is really smart with the puck and would have no problem at all playing with top players.

There are reasons for concern of course, and you would of course like to see more at this point. But I wouldn't rule out that like Lias can become as good as say a JT Miller (or better).

Guess he can’t get open to get his shot off. He’s a guy who might benefit from bulking up to play a 3rd line role.

Lettieri is slowly coming to the conclusion that he won't be an NHL player for a prolonged period. Maybe a fill in for a couple games here and there. He's a AAAA player when he is on his game.

I could see him maybe leaving the organization next summer to go try it elsewhere, but he likes the Ranger organization, so I could see him signing to play with Hartford again.

If he leaves though, he'd prefer to go home to Minnesota

The challenge for Lettieri is that he more or less came in as the player he was, and hasn't really moved the needle forward.

He's not going to make the NHL as a scoring forward, but he hasn't necessarily evolved as a player to the point that he could make it as a bottom six forward.

In theory, I can visualize a path forward for him where he plays the RW, and brings an energy and buzz to that role, mixed with some offense. But it doesn't always work out that way. Some people adjust and re-invent their games a little easier than others.

Fogarty should be up with the team right now especially with McKegg hurt.

smith Howden Fogarty imo would be our best option over Haley or Nieves.

Fogarty is playing with a ton of confidence right now kills penalties righty shot. Skates well

the complication is that, like w Nieves, Fogs will need to be exposed to waivers if, after being recalled, then NYR need to send him back down to HWP

Went to my first Maine Mariners game on Saturday. Lotta fun. Only player who impressed me at all was Jake Elmer. Good skater. Good size. Good hands. If that translates into a potential job in the NHL some day, I have no idea.

Newfoundland has bizarre uniforms.

My son and I drove up to Hershey yesterday for what was our 7th annual Hershey-Hartford hockey game. Thinking back over the years there have been players that really stood out in the games we saw such as J.T. Miller, Oscar Lindberg, Brady Skjei, Ryan Graves, John Gilmour and Neil Pionk and lots of players that stunk. When I watched the game yesterday I really didn’t see a Wolfpack player who was dominating. Perhaps what we are seeing now with Hartford is a reversion to the mean after its fast start.

When I bought the tickets for the game in September I was very excited because I expected to see several prospects. But because of a couple of players going back to Europe, injuries specifically to Rykov, some players underperforming including Day, Group and Elmer, there really isn’t a lot of young talent on the Wolfpack outside of the goalies. I know you need veterans to set an appropriate ecosystem but I don’t see many Wolfpack players that I expect to be future core players. In fairness to Hartford, the team did a great job with Chytil and Lindgren so I don’t want to come off as overly negative. But II am less interested in Hartford now than I thought I would be in September.

The Teddy Bear toss was a great charitable event but ridiculous for a hockey game. I think the game was halted for about 45 minutes as bears were tossed and collected on the ice. The Wolfpack went back to their locker room. And by the third period it looked like 1/3 of the people had left. They paid a lot of money to toss a teddy bear on the ice.

Game Report

Lines:

O’Regan was checked into the boards early in the game and never came back. We saw the check numerous times on replay because it was some bank’s “Cheque of the Game.” So look out to see if this is serious and he is out for a while. With O’Regan gone the lines were:

Newell-Andersson-Belesky (Newell moved up from the third line with O’Regan out)
Fogarty-DiGiuseppe-Lettieri
Gettinger-Meskanen-Jones
Dmowski-McBride (these two hardly saw the ice)

LoVerde-Raddysh
Geertsen-Keane
Ebert-Taylor

Huska

PP1: Andersson-Gettinger-Lettieri-Fogarty-Keane
PP2: LoVerde-DiGiusepe-Newell-Belesky-Ebert

PK1: Gettinger-Jones-Raddysh-LoVerde
PK2: Andersson-Geertsen-Fogarty-Ebert

Goal:

Three of the four Hershey goals were rebounds left by Huska. The fourth goal was a shot from the point that hit someone in front and dropped right in front of a Hershey player. Nothing Huska can do. This was the first time I saw Huska and don’t know if this was just one game or if he has a rebound problem. But he made all of the other saves.

Defense:
Hartford played the game with three AHL contract players, Nick Ebert, the throw in for Namestnikov, Darren Raddysh and Joey Keane. I think the bigger news is that Sean Day was scratched again as he was the game before and I believe he was healthy. Day finished last season showing improvement and it is very disappointing to see that it looks like he wasn’t able to build on that performance this year. The defense as a whole was fine, nothing spectacular either good or bad. Ebert and Raddysh look OK but not someone I would expect to have a significant role on the Rangers.

So Let’s focus on Joey Keane. If you looked at the box score you would see he had one primary assist and was on the ice for all four goals against and none for. And looking at those statistics you would be completely mislead. Keane’s primary assist was taking the puck up the ice on a power play and dropping the puck back to Fogarty at the blue line and Fogarty scores. Keane did almost nothing on the play. At the same time while he was on the ice for all four goals I didn’t see any play where I thought he was out of position. For example, the first goal — that led to the teddy bear toss— was an odd man rush where Huska didn’t control a rebound and a Bears player was left uncovered —looked to me on the replay that Dmowski should have covered that player. Keane ran the fist power play and seemed to do a good although not great job. I really like the Joey Keane pick and think he is progressing but I am not sure I see a player who is going to be better that Truba, Fox, D’Angelo or Lundqvist.

Forwards:

I would agree that Stephen Fogarty was the best Wolfpack forward but I don’t want to go overboard oh his performance. The first goal on the power play, he picks up the puck at his own blue line and literally goes through the defense with no one picking him up. The Hershey fans around me were screaming about their lack of defense. So good on Fogarty for taking advantage of bad defense and making a good shot to score but that play doesn’t happen in the NHL. The game tying goal at the end of the third period, he carries the puck over the blue line, crosses over to the middle of the ice and losses puck control. Littierri, who is with Fogarty finds the puck and shoots on goal, The Bears goalie, Philip Copley makes the save the pushes the rebound off to the side. Fogarty gets to the puck and turns around and shoots on net. Copley is in perfect position and somehow misses the puck. Neither my son nor I could understand how he let that in. So again good on Fogarty for making the play but I don’t think an NHL goalie lets that puck in. I though Fogarty looked confident but I just don’t think he has NHL quickness. In fact to me it’s the lack of quickness that sets most of the Wolfpack forwards apart from the Rangers forwards. Meskanen is another example. He made several nice little plays but wasn’t able to react quickly enough to turn them into scoring chances.

Lias Andersson had a quiet first two periods. But he made the best offensive play for the Wolfpack in the third period where he circled the net and broke free for a good scoring opportunity. But he also took a horrific penalty with 2:30 left and the Wolfpack down a goal where he just took a Bears player in his way and threw him down to the ice. Fortunately on the next face-off a Bears players was called for roughing during the face off leading to a 4-4 with Fogarty tying the game. I see elements of a player in Andersson but he wasn’t as good as I saw him play last year in Hartford. I wouldn’t give up on him yet but I do want to see more from him.

Please feel free to let me know if you have any questions or disagree with my thoughts. Constructive conversation always is welcomed.

Lias was playing with Beleskey and Fogarty. Lines may have jumbled at times with the injury to Danny but lias def played with those guys

I think it was Comic Book Night or something, IDK, I remember reading something.

The Elmer signing was intriguing to me since some decent NHL people said nice things about him. He hasn't really gotten the production going in Maine, which obviously does not bode well. Hopefully he can get back up to Hartford soon and show something.

That's how they started out but with the O'Regan injury Fogarty went back to center on the second line. There was some jumbling of lines because of all of the penalties (9 on Hershey and 5 on the Wolfpack) and injury to O'Regan but Fogarty definitely centering the second line to replace O'Regan.

it's part of the DC Initiative, the League signed a couple of years back, all 28 teams have those nights, it just depends on which themed jersey or throwback, like the original Classic Mariners logo which had only been seen on thechampionship/division banners from 1977-78 1978-79, and 1983-84, before the transfer to Providence in the early 90s

The problem with Lettieri stems from the simple mindedness of the AHL.

You can’t play Lettieri with skilled guys like say Panarin. Someone like Fast ‘can’ play there because he knows what to do with the puck when he gets it, even if he won’t do it with a lot of finesse.

The way good teams play now in the NHL, if you give the puck away once it can cost you 30 sec without the puck. Someone like Vinny can work hard for three years in the AHL and still be totally clueless what to do with the puck if he gets called up to the NHL. You must know where all your 4 teammates are and know which areas you can put it in to keep possession. If you don’t think in those terms you can’t play with teammates that does.

I mean skill wise, I don’t think VL is short on raw skill. He can skate, shoot the puck, he can play in traffic.

Hrivik has the same issues. I think that Hrivik had a NHL skill set. He really paid his dues in the AHL. But that AHL game will never work in the NHL. You have to work too hard to get the puck, that you just can’t chip away and hope for the best.

This would explain why the Mariners uniforms said Aquaman on them.

ORegan is now also hurt? (Fontaine and LZG too)

Is Day hurt? IIRC he didn't dress either weekend game

Yeah that was a stiff hit. Straight against the boards. ORegan didn’t fall or hit his head or anything. But he just skated to the bench like he didn’t want to move his upper body. Something broke. Shoulder/ribs.

The commentators talked like ‘oh we knew that was coming when X was back in the lineup’, never caught the name. Sounded like Backes almost. Anyway, it was a really hard hit by someone that hit to crush people.
