sounds like we let a good prospect slip without offering a contract. This guy was worth an NHL contract, IMO. They likely dropped the ball because of their anger after finishing last.
He wasn't offered a contract by the team that drafted and developed him and no one else has has even offered so much as an AHL deal. I would have liked to see him in camp, but to suggest we dropped the ball by not offering him an ELC... basically ignores the reality that that almost never happens.

You don't know the reason Vancouver chose not to sign him.

...no, I don't, and I didn't claim to. I just said said that the team that drafted him didn't offer him a contract, and that no other team has offered him even an AHL contract to become part of their organization. So the idea that we're screwing the pooch by not signing this guy up based on a a couple pretty good games at TCT seems kind of misguided.

If you do want to read a little about Stukel and the likely reasoning behind Vancouver not signing him, CanucksArmy has the stuff: Report: Canucks will not sign 2016 6th round pick Jakub Stukel

FWIW, the last two players I can recall that were drafted by another team that chose not to sign them, that we went on to sign, were Josh Nicholls and John Gilmour. Gilmour is maybe an NHL player? Nicholls was horrible, an ECHL-caliber player whose last four stop have been in Germany, the Czech Republic, Norway, and now with Kunlun Red Star in the KHL. Obviously teams make mistakes on players, but generally speaking, if you go unsigned, you're an extreme long shot.

Let me help you here, considering I’ve actually watched Stukel outside of one highlight video before proclaiming we should sign him. He’s your run-of-the-mill overage juniors winger that’s decent overall. He has good speed and works hard, but he doesn’t process the game fast enough to be successful at anything more than the AHL level. His hands are incredibly slow and his mechanics are just overall awkward. He never got better after his D+1 year, which happens to plenty of late-round picks. Should he have been given an ATO for Hartford? Sure, but there’s literally zero reason to even care that he didn’t. There’s better overagers available right now who would be much more useful.

Schneider had a good game last night, hope we use him this season just like we did last. Glue him to the hip of Howden like he was glued to Chytil.

He and Butler are going to be two really good AHL vets for Hartford this season. I still think they'd benefit from maybe one more AAAA type of player, but I think they'll be solid to start the year.

Some swap is needed on the defense just to make sure they're not rolling out 6 lefties.

So the Pack have a bunch of guys that are good ECHL players but shitty AHL players, plus a couple prospects. So far, anyway. I know that's how it is most years but I always hope they can find some guy with a lot of skill coming out of Juniors or college who will take an AHL deal. The only real professional rookie they have is Marnell, some dude from SLU who doesn't appear to be that good.

for those of you losing sleep because there would be no RHD w/HWP if both Pionk and ADA stay w NYR:

FLAMES REDUCE CAMP ROSTER
The Flames have also released the following four players who were attending camp on PTO's: Gilbert Brule (RW), Jeff Glass (G), Ryan Sproul (D) and Viktor Svedberg (D).

Shawn ODonnell brought back for another go w HWP
Pack Ink Shawn O'Donnell to AHL Deal | Hartford Wolf Pack

IMHO most interesting thing about him is he's one those guys who went to Canadian University, then turned pro; just noticed now, that even more rare for a guy playing at AHL pro level*, he only played 31 games even at Major Junior level.

Shawn O'Donnell at eliteprospects.com
Shawn O'Donnell hockey statistics and profile at hockeydb.com

* actually only played a handful of games at AHL level last couple seasons, he joined Pack in jan'18 but only played 1 game

Atleast he scores on the ECHL level and doesn't seem to be a face puncher, i'm good with this, seems like a solid depth move for Pack/Mariners.

Gilbert Brule. There's a blast from the past.
I remember he was a free agent around the time we had Pouliot, IIRC, and people wanted to give him a shot.

O'Donnell is fine. I mean he generally sucks but through his time here, he was always a guy who would bring it every night.

Let's not exaggerate here. Meskanen is a potential 3rd line winger in the NHL. If he can't crack the line-up on a rebuilding team, we are not losing a very good player
I generally agree, particularly in that we have no idea really if he's a very good player.

However, while we're rebuilding and spots are up for grabs, there really weren't that many to grab. If you consider that Zibanejad, Buchnevich, Kreider, Hayes, Namestnikov, Spooner, Zuccarello, Vesey, and Fast were locks to make the team, that leaves three forward spots. He's then competing against our two top picks from last year in Andersson and Chytil, guys like McLeod, Holland and Beleskey who the organization values even if their skill level sucks, Lettieri who the team likes, then fringe guys like Nieves, Fogarty and Gettinger.

If he's a good player he should be able to beat out the fringe guys, and probably someone like Lettieri, but the rest is really tough competition for a guy new to North America. And then there's the reality that we don't always take the best overall player, but the best players for the team. So, if Meskanen can't crack the team which it doesn't look like he will, I wouldn't get all up in arms about losing a really good player--but I will still wonder if he could have been a good player, under different circumstances.

This camp, if there's one thing you can say, the front office did a good job bringing in a lot of legitimate competition. Usually there's like 1-2 guys who end up on the bubble. This year it feel like there a 5 or more guys who could reasonably make it, or not.

Meskanen is signed for two years and he also expressed how much he wanted to come to the NHL in the signing article. He'll stay at least for the year.
He also can't leave without the Rangers voiding his contract

Meskanen doesn't have the euro clause, Lindqvist does.

No one should be worried haha
