Speculation: Calgary Flames interested in Brandon Carlo

Really depends on the cost but I think this makes sense. Especially if Calgary looks to shop Andersson in the off season. Flames have been playing one of Hanley or Miromanov pretty regularly in the top 4 and it just doesn't work at all. Personally I would rather target a similar LD like Samuelson but Carlo is fine. Boston will probably ask too much for him though
It only makes sense if Carlo is cheap

Any chance Carlo and Andersson could be the basis for the deal?
Can’t imagine the Bruins would want to add what the Flames would want

In seasons prior Carlo was an amazing pure shutdown dman kinda like a poor man's Slavin, not saying Carlo is in the same tier but they both play that eraser style and can play in the top 4 on a contender. He never had much offense going for him but could chip in the occasional helper and was reliable to get the job done on defense. This season he hasn't been at the top of his game for the first 60. Granted he has had concussion issues in past seasons and maybe this season so that could be a factor but up until 2 or 3 games ago he was hard to watch to put it nicely. He like the rest of the Bruins came to camp not ready for the season due to a summer of weddings and parties but that usually isn't his MO. Bruins fans are torn on he needs a change of scenery to get that pro edge back to his game or maybe just a mulligan season and give him another go. When he is playing to his top level he is an incredible asset but don't expect to be dazzled much especially when the puck is on his stick. He also isn't mean in the slightest which can be frustrating given his size and position.
Much appreciated.

I would add to this that going from Chara to Krug to Hampus Lindhom as your partner to a combo of Zadorov, Parker Wotherspoon and Jordan Osterle as your three most common partners isn't great for a one way defensive defenseman getting hard matchups and zone starts. cc @Lunatik

That's a good point. Carlo has always been steady it might not be fair to blame him wholly the second he's not given the downgrade of partners and overall Bruins team.

In my view the answer would be yes. Carlo can't play, or hasn't shown, that he can play Andersson minutes, but then again maybe that wouldn't be the expectation.
Andersson hasn't really shown he can play Andersson minutes either this season to be fair.

There is always value in a 6'5", good skating, good teammate, right shot, shutdown/PK defenseman.
Carlo is the Bruins 2nd pair RD behind 1RD McAvoy. They currently have Peake playing 3RD.
So if they move Carlo Boston will need to fill a hole at 2RD.

Makes perfect sense. Flames have more depth at LD than RD.
Having 6 AHL'ers, 3 of which have to play in the NHL is not what I would consider depth. Depth usually also has the caveat of coming with a smidge of quality not just straight up a big number.

I’ll play devils advocate here, this makes a lot of sense for the Flames from 2 perspectives.

First they need one more top 4 defenseman in the worst of ways currently. For this season alone, it let’s Calgary run Bahl-Andersson then Weegar-Carlo. But with Parekh coming up and looking like he could be trying to push for a spot as soon as next year, it gives us another top tier defensive option to pair with him (all of Bahl, Weegar, and Carlo would be options). Carlo is signed with 2 additional with a cheap cap hit that would help with bringing the kids up. We could then hide Parekh on the 3rd line with a high end option to insulate him in Carlo, and he would have great options to move up with if his play merits more time.

Bahl-Andersson
Weegar-Pachal
Parekh-Carlo

Every pair has an extremely strong defensive player for Parekh, and it’s already a decent defense core as well.

The second perspective is it could allow Andersson to be traded without a large loss to the team. Conroy wants to reward the team for its play so far and also wants to keep them competitive during the re-tool, but also doesn’t want to cost the future of the team in any moves. Any futures used (Florida, NJ or Vegas 1st) would be small compared to the futures gained by trading Andersson. Could be a smart way to gain assets while also not hurting the team too much with the strength of the offensive defenseman in Calgary’s system.
Paying the cost of a top 4 right side defenseman to play him on the 3rd pair doesn't seem wise for a GM.

Much appreciated homie.

I'm indifferent on whether or not the Flames should target Carlo. I won't clamor for it, but I won't be upset either since he's not old and he has some term.

Should the Flames target him, I would assume the plan would be to play him with Weegar.

This makes no sense, the last position the Flames need players at is right defense, it's our only strong position. Meanwhile the left side is a wasteland of AHLers.
Also means they can trade a RSD for a right shot centre if they have a guy like Carlo to step in..

Parek , Brzustewics and Mews, are all super offensive RSD in the flames top 10 prospects. Could use the latter two to get a Centre. Deal a strength for a weakness.

Carlo is a 6'5" physical shutdown D, but hes 28... so there lies the question mark. Does he fit into the Parek window of 4-5 years from now ? not really but maybe

As soon as next year it is entirely possible that RD Parekh is good enough to make the jump to the NHL right out of juniors.

Not sure how familiar you are with Parekh’s game but having watched him play in person multiple times over the past three years, I can assure you that there’s not a hope in hell of him playing in the NHL next year. I’m doubtful that Parekh will ever be able to cut it as an NHL defenseman.

He’s woefully inadequate defensively for the NHL and has ZERO physical play in his game. In the OHL, he’s able to freewheel against 16yr old kids and future beer league players to pad his stats but that’s not going to translate to the NHL.

And then there’s the attitude on top of his physical limitations. Parekh’s best chance at playing in the NHL would be to convert to playing RW.

I almost fell off my chair when Calgary drafted Parekh when Sam Dickinson was still available. What a catastrophic mistake that was.
