I’ll play devils advocate here, this makes a lot of sense for the Flames from 2 perspectives.
First they need one more top 4 defenseman in the worst of ways currently. For this season alone, it let’s Calgary run Bahl-Andersson then Weegar-Carlo. But with Parekh coming up and looking like he could be trying to push for a spot as soon as next year, it gives us another top tier defensive option to pair with him (all of Bahl, Weegar, and Carlo would be options). Carlo is signed with 2 additional with a cheap cap hit that would help with bringing the kids up. We could then hide Parekh on the 3rd line with a high end option to insulate him in Carlo, and he would have great options to move up with if his play merits more time.
Bahl-Andersson
Weegar-Pachal
Parekh-Carlo
Every pair has an extremely strong defensive player for Parekh, and it’s already a decent defense core as well.
The second perspective is it could allow Andersson to be traded without a large loss to the team. Conroy wants to reward the team for its play so far and also wants to keep them competitive during the re-tool, but also doesn’t want to cost the future of the team in any moves. Any futures used (Florida, NJ or Vegas 1st) would be small compared to the futures gained by trading Andersson. Could be a smart way to gain assets while also not hurting the team too much with the strength of the offensive defenseman in Calgary’s system.
