Hoping Mackinnon pulls it off. Plus I want to see him in the playoffs again.

Kopitar winning would be great though just for what it would do to captain intangibles legacy.

Personally I'd give it to MacK or Giroux this year, but I'm going to pose the question anyways.

Why shouldn't it go to Connor McDavid?

"The Hart Memorial Trophy, originally known as the Hart Trophy,is awarded annually to the "player judged most valuable to his team" in the NHL".

Nowhere does it say anything about your team having to make the playoffs. Under the current parameters set forth by the NHL, I can't think of any player in the league more valuable to their team than McJesus is to Edmonton. Without him they probably fall under the 48pts Colorado had last year. I realise the kid is the talk of the league all the time, and this rubs some people the wrong way, but based on the actual requirements of the trophy itself, there isn't a more qualified player this year.

Do they need to redefine the requirements for the Hart since the only knock is that the Oilers aren't making the playoffs, even though that shouldn't have any effect on who takes it?

***Edit: Apologies, I just saw the other hart thread further down the page. Close if you want.***

Question for McDavid fans.

How many points did he score after the Oilers were practically out of play-off picture? I believe much more than before, when Oilers games mean something...

I'm not even sure when they were out of play-off picture...

During 2 months (november+december) he was ill with tonsil infections and ongoing fevers, lost weight. He was playing reduced minutes and was cold in terms of goslscoring. He has been fully healthy since january, and started producing at a higher rate after the all star break. Oilers werent Mathematically eliminated by then.

is he the most valuable to his team? yes probably. but there is an unwritten rule of such that a team must make the playoffs. hard to give it to him with some of the other guys resume that will make the playoffs.

That's such a crock. You have parameters set forth by the league itself to determine who wins what, but those don't matter as much as the unwritten rules?

Heres why:

Oilers without McDavid - bottom 5
Oilers with McDavid - bottom 10

Devils without Hall - bottom 5
Devils with Hall - playoff team

Kings without Kopitar - bottom 10
Kings with Kopitar - possible playoff team

Avalanche without MacKinnon - bottom 10
Avalanche with MacKinnon - possible playoff team

And so it continues

Thats why IMO. MVP isnt just best on their team - it also matters how big of an influence they have on their teams end position in the standings

Thats why Hall deserves it IMO. Largest point gap (36 up on Hischier), probably breaks 90, and carried his team to first playoff birth in five years.

If the Devils make the playoffs Hall deserves it to me. Call me bias but he has 85 points in 71 games, leads the team in goals (33) and assists (52).

Our second and third place points leaders only have 89 points COMBINED. Hall scored 4 points less. Nico in second with 49 and Palmieri with 40.

We finish close to dead last without Hall.

Hell
Is it possible for the Hart Trophy to be awarded to nobody? Feel like that’s the only way to keep everyone happy.

Kopitar has an equally as good case

MacKinnon if Colorado makes the playoffs, if not... Probably McDavid by default? Depends on how you define the award.

With/Without McDavid, Oilers only change a few spots in the standings to last place
With/Without Hall, Devils go from playoff team to bottom feeder

Does that sum it up for you?

Carter has missed 75% of the season. Kings would be dead last without Kopitar too.

Lindsay is a foregone conclusion. Art Ross and Lindsay is a pretty nice consolation prize.
