Thinking positively I don't know why the AAV and term would be leaked if the deal wasn't as close as they are claiming..

Unless they are seeing who can top that in the open market..

Staying positive until I have reason to not to.

Understood, my point is there’s no delay in NHL contracts once you have an agreement on terms.

They probably have a agreed on parameters (total money and years) but need to negotiate the finer points (bonus money / yearly salary). Dreger said there was still work to be done, but expected it to finish. That is usually what he means when he reports that.

The top free agent deal don’t usually get completed until later in the afternoon on day 1, if they get done on day 1. We are not at panic time.

Kypreos is independent and doesn’t have restrictions on reporting the others do. He probably hear the wide parameters and reported.

I will note as a caution going back the Kovalchuk trade…he reported him going to the Flyers well after it was obvious the Devils were the team. He could have jumped the gun.

I really don't think and/or hope this isn't the case, but in the off chance it is, I kind of agree with you.

I have spent too many years as a NJ fan and I'm tired of guys that don't want to play in NJ or just use the team to up the money and find a better landing spot elsewhere. They have a young team that seems happy to play together. Their best days are well ahead of them and even with Hamilton I think they will be mediocre next season. There will be someone else next season if Hamilton has cold feet. I would just want Fitz to call the agent before Hamilton has anything concrete as an alternative and tell him that NJ is out and best of luck. I'm at the point where I want guys on the team who actually want to play there. Hopefully it's just minor technical issues and Hamilton isn't stalling or trying to change the parameters of the contract.

For arguments sake - what teams are out there that can fit Hamilton in at a AAV that is at least $8.5M? You have to think that some potential Hamilton suitors BEFORE noon have now spent themselves out of his market.

Maybe Hamilton’s camp is just stalling to get 9M$ AAV or closer to what Seth Jones got and NJ doesn’t want to bid against themselves.

Probably ironing out signing bonuses and salary as well as protection clauses.

That could be a bit of a hold up even after the general terms of the contract are agreed upon. UFAs generally have some flexibility to ask for buyout proof contracts or ones with high signing bonuses to save on taxes.

they will want to make a media play about it and sort through things - devils want to very much invest into turning it around and sell tickets and become more relevant so they need to milk this

The Pietrangelo signing, even though everyone knew Vegas was the team going into the day, didn’t happen officially until about 7 pm in the evening.

Yup, it took awhile to figure out the contract structure and signing bonuses even though the length/total money had been agreed upon. Vaguely remember that Pietrangelo and his wife flew in and got a quick tour as well before everything was finalized.

Is Dougie married? If so, gotta get his wife to tour the Short Hills mall!

Gord Miller throwing, ok shoving, Dreger under the bus, saying "So Darren Dreger has now failed us in the Dougie Hamilton saga, cause we're 3 hours in and still no confirmation... what's the deal with that Dregs!"
