So he's gonna get a shit ton more on a 7-year deal than what Carolina was offering for 8.

It's this simple, if Kyper didn't send out that tweet the narrative would be this is almost a done deal and we'd all be full of hope instead of dread.

And people can say what they want about him, the dude's not some rando blogger writing for Zamboni Sports.com or a Twitter troll trying to pass themselves off as McKenzie, Kypreos is a bit more mainstream than that and not likely to fool around with shit.

There are currently 12 defensemen making more than 8 million per season most of whom are in their 30's and for the most part are being paid for past performance and not their current value.

An $8.5 m contract would pay Hamilton more than what Miro Heiskanen or Victor Hedman are paid.

With the bulk of the Devils top players in their early 20's it's hard to see the value in a contract that would be so burdensome when those players start reaching UFA status.

I understand that line of thinking, but look at it this way: Assume that NJ got Hamilton for 6.5 mil per. That's 2.5 less than he likely gets. $2.5 mil can be made up elsewhere. Sure, it likely means a Kuokkanen or a Wood gets sent out, or the fourth line guys get rotated to stay cheap, but somebody on the roster is going to get paid beyond Hischier. The trick to me isn't a guy at the top that can maybe stay on top for four or five years. It's avoiding the overpaid middle and bottom sixers that teams seem to get stuck with. Other than Hamilton, it's hard to see NJ having any long term commitments to any older players over the next five years. My guess is they pay Jack on a long term deal and maybe Smith if he continues to develop. Beyond that who could command anything huge? Bratt and Zacha? Maybe if they have good years but my guess is that they are sent packing if the price is too high. NJ will be adding ELC wings over the next couple of years that can play those roles if need be. Sharangovich? If he has another good year I could see NJ wanting to lock him up to a longer deal.

I still stand by my 'theory' that this is being drawn out so all the online bullshit - presser and post-signing interviews - can be live in primetime :P

Whoever is nervous about not signing Hamilton, after Kyle confirmed it and there’s been absolutely zero rumours of anyone else being in the running… you must be a big ball of stress 24/7, which is not a fun way to live.

I'm out of patience with contract bullshit as it is considering Zach Wilson's holdout is dragging into camp for the football Jets over freaking offset language, I don't need another mini-Kovy drama here.

I would bet a weeks salary that this will get announced today. Can’t give you a time but by 23:59, it’ll be done.

I wouldn't bet as much on it, but I'm still confident it'll be resolved today. If it goes past midnight then I'll start to get sky is falling.

Carolina for whatever reason just did not value him all that much.

Question would then be were other teams offering more then the Canes were? Have to figure they were. $6 m is just super cheap.

gonna guess they're worried about the contracts with necas and svech (if they can re-sign svech that is)

I almost forgot MSG had that Devils FA show tonight. So I’m moving up my timeline assuming it gets announced by 8 if not on the show itself. It’d be weird as f*** if it was still only kinda sorta done then.

The value is we get this guy for a couple years where it doesn't effect our ability to sign other players at all.

I think it also opens our playoff window. We would no longer looking at 2-3 more years of lottery picking. We should be in the mix next season if this gets done.

Dundon is incredibly cheap. The Canes wouldn't offer Aho more than $6M per year before the Canadiens offer sheet.

Maybe he’s flying in to sign it live on MSG with Dano…that would be a neat PR stunt

And yet he'll throw hundreds of millions of dollars in what was demonstratively an abomination of an attempt to start a football league.

There have been several reports that Dougie agreed to terms with the Devils. Nobody is backing out now. The Devils won't announce until all the i's are dotted and the t's are crossed. There's no reason to panic .. they just simply will not announce it until it's signed sealed and delivered.
