Halo: Infinite (Dec. 8th, 2021) - Xbox Series X

I really wouldnt count on the game looking better upon release. For every game that gets an upgrade from their pre-release presentation there are probably five that get a downgrade. Also it came out that the demo was running on a PC that is "representative of the experience that players will have on Xbox Series X." We'll have to wait and see whether that is true or not.

That a) it's further in development than Halo Infinite and b) normal for the developers of that game.

I don't know how you can possibly claim that it's further along in development when they're both releasing in the same time period.

Also "work in progress"...

Halo Infinite was aiming at Holidays 2020 since the beginning, Cyperpunk was not.

And Cyberpunk was not ready for those release dates, so clearly it wasn't as far along as it was supposed to be, or it would be out already.

Neither developer has been super open about the development process as far as I know, so I don't know where you're getting the information that Halo is so far behind.

Cyberpunk was supposed to be out in February...

All this talk about the visuals is warranted considering the context of Microsoft selling the Xbox Series X. Hopefully they can update the game over the rest of its development cycle/post release to make people want the newest machine.

What I'm actually worried about as a gamer is if 343 can pull off a semi-open world concept and still allow for great set pieces moments to compliment Halo's emergent gameplay. If the game comes out and doesn't match the joy of Bungie's era, then that will the death knell. If 343 figures how to pull the new elements with the classic core gameplay, then this'll be fantastic. Halo is not for everyone, but at its best the core gameplay loop is one of a kind, much like Doom.

For real. A bunch of whining about graphics instead of discussing how crazy an Open-World Halo game will be.

This is going to be Microsoft’s console seller. It’s their baby. They’re going to make sure it’s excellent. Can’t freaking WAIT

Edit: Another point about the visuals is that while Halo never needed to the best looking game of its time, especially as a constantly moving FPS, it's true that a $500m project should impress visually.

Did you guys not watch the same video I did? The graphics look very good and I like the new design style. Honestly a little surprised at the bickering over this instead of the idea of playing a Halo game like we’ve never played before

Halo 2 is the game I think of when think of becoming a gamer. It'll be interesting, as you've said. Not as many exciting games as I'd like, but new consoles is fun.

I think it's fine so long as the gameplay works out, but I disagree about the graphics. From a showcasing perspective, Halo: Infinite was only appealing to Halo fans who can note the nuances of its gameplay; as a game marketing the next generation, it didn't succeed in its endeavor. Beyond some texture issues, the demo also had disappearing grass, weird lighting, and a general lack of detail on the guns. The situation presented also made me think of the possibilities as a Halo player, but it wasn't the kind of vertical slice that gets potential buyers invested. It wasn't a good demo, especially compared to what COD or Sony can usually be counted on (third person action games that pushes hardware limitations and storytelling), and I say this as someone who never bought a PS4 (or an Xbox One for that matter) and has no intention of getting a PS5 either.

Edit: After watching Digital Foundry's review of Halo: Infinite, there's a case to be made that the push for 4K might be a foundational issue that prevents the game from looking as good as it could (while keeping it at 60 FPS, of course).

Perhaps the best way Microsoft could have advertised this game (from the start) as a cap off for the Xbox One, which would then be upgraded on Xbox Series X over time. This would have made it a lot more palatable for the current ecosystem while promoting the gaming as a service aspect.

One issue I have with a lot of games is a lack of responsiveness in the world. It's just no fun shooting at enemies that don't react or driving around in a world that feels disconnected from your vehicle.

I like the enemy and physics interactions in the demo. There were some nice touches in there, like the Brutes tossing suicide Grunts at the player, limping after getting shot, the Warthog tire getting blown off.

I was waiting for a Digital Foundry video on this. I couldn't pinpoint what looked so off about the game, they did a great job explaining it.

Huh? Destiny was an OK spinoff from Halo. Destiny is a mediocre franchise. Halo is one of the greatest.
Halo is mediocre now too. The original Halo team made Destiny iirc, so yeah, you've basically already seen what open world Halo looks like.

Yeah, Halo has gone downhill. Hopefully they revitalize it with the next gen console. And yes, Destiny was made by the old Halo team. It wasn't their best work though, imo.
