The entire team fails the eye test more or less constantly which is basically what you're describing here.

Other teams don't let guys just walk down the slot on the regular. That's a very basic thing the Rangers inexplicably allow 4-5 times a game that other teams allow 0-1 times a game.
They've played decent slot line D during this stretch up until tonight. If you can picture an "I" extending from the goal up to the top of the circles, their 5 man rotation had been pretty good in stacking players along that imaginary "I" and making sure they cover the slot and have layers there. But tonight Montreal was just too fast for them. They were overwhelmed. If St. Louis can get their shit together, they would be a dangerous team. They've got a lot of speedy players who are also shifty.

The Rangers remind me of my college frisbee team which had zero plays, zero structure, and completely freelanced. We beat A LOT of well drilled teams because they weren't mentally equipped to just mark random bullshit all game.

We also never won a tournament or even placed top 3 because random shit, even when you're good at random shit, is gonna lose to structure and effort over time.

Because they had a few cheat codes for things (Fox is a wizard, Panarin makes shit happen by existing, Kreider became a net front God for 3 years, Mika had the 1 season with 20 PPGs, Shesterkin god mode) and those were high leverage high reward scenarios where the Rangers outperformed their analytics.

None of the cheat codes are working this year, and they're under .500. That lines up with the eye test. The numbers always win out.

The only team other than the Rangers where having good players in sneered at are the Oilers. I don't get it. Rangers had good players is somehow a cheat code. When the Penguins win three cups with the top 2 centers in the world everyone is treating their body like an amusement park over their roster.

i don't know why but it feels like that's an oversimplification.

yeah i mean that's a fair point, 5 is a big number.

but there were a number of 5bell saves, many defensive breakdowns, and that OT losing goal was not possible to save.

I get it but to me timing of goals matters. Was that the worst goal in the history of time? No. Was the defense good? No. Was this an all time bad performance? No. But this board needs to spare me the automatic "(insert goalie) deserved better".

The other teams with good players play good.

We play like dog shit and then our good players score a bunch of points.

People sneered at the Oilers when the Oilers were ass and they were right. The Oilers are legit now. They learned how to play defense.

The Rangers have been incredibly successful cheating a lot of the fundamentals of the game for years. I can't speak for Edmonton but anecdotally I can't recall a non-tanking team that for example did fly-bys at the level the Rangers have done consistently for 5+ years now.

Kreider's game is not made for 3 on 3. He's a net front guy. You need to be able to skate and handle the puck on 3 on 3. He has hands like feet for everything other than deflecting shots.
He's been good in OT in the past but without his speed he can't hang. He's usually good defensively in OT and he can use his speed to flip possession and stretch the ice and get breakaways.

But now? With his speed very clearly diminished and most noticeably in tight spaces and on the boards he's losing battles and late on pucks that he has won 100% of the time for the last decade, he really shouldn't be out there in OT - probably not at all in the game honestly he's maybe at 60% overall right now.

All the pending guys should be moved, but would honestly give Drury a standing ovation if his only move was getting rid of Lindgren and putting any other player with Fox, make it end by the deadline, please.

They were living on individual brilliance, doing just enough as a group to create situations that allowed their gimmicks to win the day. Goes back to some of us saying they are a bunch of one trick pony specialists.

There were a lot of games Panarin's first few years where the team would be flat as shit, he'd be sniffing farts, and he'd vomit up 1g 2a in the 3rd period and they'd win 4-3.

All that down the memory hole.

i dunno. i had fun watching game breaker bread, and last year, and kid line '23. it was fun to watch. tonight was, too.

Getting baited into track meets is black tar heroin for this squad. Love to have a structure and veteran coach like Laviolette behind the bench to lead the way!

The Rangers have turned the corner defensively in the last stretch outside of this game. No one mentions it. We win in shutout fashion where we allow like 8 shots in the last two periods to a team on a 6 game winning streak and no one says anything positive. In fact people say how they're mediocre. We play a bad game defensively and once again this the worst defense ever. This board literally has no break on complaining about this team. And this year with a mediocre record I can somewhat get it. We were doing it for three f***ing straight years win or lose when our worst record was 107 points. It's really f***ing tiring. And somehow because I flip my shit on goalies people say that I'm negative and angry. Yet I'm one of the few people that once in a while sees something other than "this is worst team ever". But because everyone loved Hank I got a reputation as this angry negative poster. When this whole board is one angry and negative place every game. Win while playing well, lose when playing well, lose when playing poorly, win when playing poorly. It lterally doesn't matter what the result is.

And this is literally every thread on every topic. Every former player is amazing. Shockingly enough when they were here they were bums. Every current player sucks. Other than goalies once in a while because if you credit the goalie and "muh PP" then you don't have to admit that a team is halfway decent with the best record in the NHL and and ECF berth.

I had fun too. Tonight was very entertaining. But they neglect fundamentals on a team wide basis and have for a long, long time.

Them standing still on the PP looking lost is because they used to stand still and then get a Kreider deflection goal and it's not working and they have no answers.
