They've played decent slot line D during this stretch up until tonight. If you can picture an "I" extending from the goal up to the top of the circles, their 5 man rotation had been pretty good in stacking players along that imaginary "I" and making sure they cover the slot and have layers there. But tonight Montreal was just too fast for them. They were overwhelmed. If St. Louis can get their shit together, they would be a dangerous team. They've got a lot of speedy players who are also shifty.The entire team fails the eye test more or less constantly which is basically what you're describing here.
Other teams don't let guys just walk down the slot on the regular. That's a very basic thing the Rangers inexplicably allow 4-5 times a game that other teams allow 0-1 times a game.
