Fans are the only ones who care about the standings. Guys aren't leaving millions on the table to sign a hometown discount with a Canadian team. The Flames are good for the first year in Gaudreau's career, do you think that's going to entice him to stay for 8 years at a reduced rate? We've seen with American players in particular that they tend to chase the money.

I’m sure Gaudreau can get a ton of money somewhere else.

Kadri and Letang, not so much given Kadri’s career numbers and Letang’s age.

So many mistakes are made signing UFA’s year to year by teams it’s crazy, as a general rule much sooner staying away from UFA’s, especially big UFA signings.

Being legitimately terrible because of bad luck with injuries and then trying to UFA your way out of it might just be the most Habs thing ever

Time for crazy predictions that if they come true I am a legend but if wrong no one will remember.

Price LTIR retires
Habs draft either Nemec or Jiricek
Kris Letang 3 years @ 7 - 7.5
Nazem Kadri 5-6 years @ 6.5
Fleury 2 years @ 5

Players traded before UFA

Lehkonen to caps or Oilers, 2nd + b prospect
Dvorak to Boston or Rangers, late 1st or equiv prospect

Chiarot Rnagers or St Louis, 1st or equivalent prospect + late round pick.

True Wildcard prediction

Petry Stays

They're this ___ close to Bedard, but they can't help trying to be a bubble team that will still miss the playoffs.
Maybe the league will twist the rules one more time and allow 30 teams in. Once in, you never know right? :)

Wow i thought they were gonna try and build a Florida or Colorado type of core with guys like Wright, Bedard etc....

With them Hiring St. Louis and now this rumor it's looking like that's not gonna be the case ....That's too bad......

Still gotta let it play out to know for sure though......

The pressure on Habs ownership and management is so great that they can't afford to do a rebuild. The best they can do is go after free agents and make the best deals they can.

Montreal is a great market, but this is the downside of that market.

How is this surprising? Unlike the fools on this board, everyone knows 99% of executives don't go out and try to tank. The Habs already have some good young pieces from the five previous years, where they've sucked. They're obviously not going to try and tank and this shouldn't be a 5 year rebuild. The Habs aren't going to contend next year, but they're not going to try and go out with barebones roster either.

The Habs wanting to go after a big fish has absolutely nothing to do with the market.
