The Flames are good for the first year in Gaudreau's career, do you think that's going to entice him to stay for 8 years at a reduced rate? The pressure on Habs ownership and management is so great that they can't afford to do a rebuild. The best they can do is go after free agents and make the best deals they can.

Montreal is a great market, but this is the downside of that market.

How is this surprising? Unlike the fools on this board, everyone knows 99% of executives don't go out and try to tank. The Habs already have some good young pieces from the five previous years, where they've sucked. They're obviously not going to try and tank and this shouldn't be a 5 year rebuild. The Habs aren't going to contend next year, but they're not going to try and go out with barebones roster either.
