to bad it’s the shittiest year ever for free agents

There are still some interesting UFAs. especially if they want to add some grit to the middle 6 wings. Could be a good offseason to package superfluous younger middle 6 guys to a team that wants/needs to get younger and replenish that depth through free agency now that Montreal might be more of a destination.

the top end guys like tuch and raddysh come with huge risks . seems like there getting more than what there gonna be worth . hughes and gorton have stated the need to get heavier which im all for . beyond the obvious 2c and 2rd we could really use who were you looking at that could bring some grit to the middle six wings ?

p.s. absolutely love the concept your putting out . makes perfect sense .

Not really, Habs looking for depth players. Actually fairly good.
so i think we’d ideally like to switch out a few guys . texier , dach , veleno , bolduc , evans , newhook , kapanen could all be upgraded for size and grit . newhook would be the last one of these due to being the 2nd line center until we find another . bolduc shows some grit but he’s not huge by any means . evans is versatile but again not huge . dach is huge but ……….. , kapanen has promise but not huge . texier is meh .
so we could let dach and veleno walk , trade kapanen who has some value this off season but i dont know who the free agent depth guys are we can go after in free agency .

I could see the Jets kicking the tires on 2-3 of the OP players, but I wouldn’t offer much for any, their depth players and some reclamation projects like Dach who likely/possibly isn’t even going to get a qualifying offer from the Habs.
Something like Dach + Struble for a 2nd (maybe the Habs include a 4th) would make sense for the Habs just in terms of getting back some draft equity after moving at least one 1st rounder as one of the 2/3 assets in a trade for a 2C. Try to do another off-season like last summer where the 1st rounder went for the established Dobson and then the 2nd rounders got Zharovsky, who had a great year and in a re-draft would have gone much higher.

Zharovsky
Fowler
Struble
Texier
Engstrom
2nd+3rd round pick
Gallagher (cap)

For
Hronek @ 50% retained
Pettersson @ 50% retained

Vancouver gets two killer prospects, two solid relatively young players, a few picks and a decent prospect and a vet that can be a great locker room guy.

Montreal gets the two perfect guys at an insane cap rate that poses zero long term risk for the team leaving them enough room to even go out and add another LWer in either Marchment or McMann or Laughton to play up and down the lineup, kill penalties and shut down teams with Dannault. Next year they can run

Same 1st line
McMann/Marchment-Pettersson-Demidov
Newhook-Evans-Anderson
Bolduc-Danault-Dach

Same D except Hutson-Hronek

Ultimately and importantly they keep Kapanen to keep developing and push Petey if need be (5.8 is fine for a 3C too lmao) and long term they still keep Hage and Reinbacher (and Pickford). Where I'd depart from some in the Habs world is that personally I am totally sold on Dobes and Monty has nice bounceback potential, so not a terrible guy to keep around.

After this, I'm telling the team to figure it out, that's a Stanley Cup winning team on paper, I will improve via the draft or free agency (free assets), but no more picks or prospects are going out unless it's a total robbery. I'll spend the next decade trying to build replacements for everyone by keeping all the picks and ideally contend for 2 decades+ and there are players that may be around for 15+ years like Demidov, Reinbacher, Hutson, Slaf, Kapanen, Bolduc, Guhle, Cole, Suzuki, ideally and perfectly going from this core to a new one with the next 15 years of drafting.
Okay but why on earth does Vancouver do this?

Probably because Zharovsky is sick (KHL rookie of the year as an 18 year old), Fowler looks like the next Brodeur and there are some very nice secondary pieces, not that they're amazing, but they all have upside and can be useful too.

Do you know who those rookies are and what they project to be?

Yes I do.

Goalies don't have that kind of value, especially unproven backup goalies.

Zharovsky is a quality prospect.

Zharovsky+ late 1st+3rd would probably be in the realm of a competitive offer for an unretained Hronek.

late 1st+2nd+Gallagher might be in the realm of what it takes to pry Pettersson

So again, the unproven goalie and then the scraps in struble, texier, and engstrom don't add up to the value of 2 1sts you're likely missing for those 2 piece UNRETAINED.

And then you are asking for, and I can't stress enough how asinine this request is. 56.55 MILLION DOLLARS OF RETENTION.

For the Jets I'd trade a 4th Rd pick for Dach. After getting a 4th Rd pick for Vlad Namestnikov.

Let go Dach Veleno, trade Gally and Montembault and try to sign Greer and Marchment/Malenstyn or similar players + package some future for a 2nd center and this team will be more dangerous

I still like bolduc and rein

I think habs have to stay the course and not join the madness this offseason. If a deal falls in our lap like the Dobson deal you take it but i have zero interest in getting into a bidding war for the 3 or 4 huge names this summer.

I think St. Louis will hang on to thomas short of a franchise altering offer. He or hischier are the only players id be comfortable moving hage or zhar for.
