Gionta was a true Hab and a great captain. People here just hate him because he was small and didn't put up points.

That's it. That's how captains are judged, by how many points they put up. It's embarrassing that people act like he was a terrible captain even with teammates saying he was great and you guys having no knowledge of what goes on in the room. :shakehead

Koivu wasn't a huge point producer either at the end, but he won the heart of the fan. Gionta never did, size unrelated.

Also, find me a player that would actually blast another one after he left for FA. Gionta also chose money instead of being a captain. There were discussion about bringing him back, but I guess his family needed those millions more than they wanted to stay in Montreal.

meh, can't fault a poster for missing Darche you know... :naughty:

One of my favorite players to ever wear the jersey. Still have a t-shirt of him that i proudly rock. Not to be faulted if he was iced on the first line, guy battled hard all his career to make his dream come true, and when he did, he frankly exceeded all expectations. Miss Matty !

At the end he wasn't, but he was at the start and that's what gets fans excited and leads them to say that a captain is great.

People praised Gionta before he left too. Show me where anyone ever said Gionta wasn't a great leader. So he should take any offer from the Habs just for the honour of being our captain? He would've taken less money from us than from Buffalo, but he wanted the security of a longer term contract because he knows his career is winding down.

I always feel bad for him when he's on anti-chambre. He's a genuinely likeable and smart dude, and sometimes you see that soul ripping, vacant expression in his eyes when they're talking. Kinda like Elliotte Friedman when he's on CBC.

25. One of the more interesting rumours out there was Montreal, looking for size up front, asking Toronto about Joffrey Lupul. The Canadiens are not among the teams Lupul has blocked, so it could have been done. Ultimately, it sounds like the Maple Leafs will keep him. Can you replace a 25-goal scorer for $5.25 million, his current cap hit? That's a good number.

From Elliotte Friedman's 30 thoughts this week

...Joffrey Lupul counts as size up front??...really??...first wanting Franson for Gorges, now wanting Lupul for his size up front...you know, that guy that's held together with paper mache & duct tape...now I'm starting to worry about Bergevin...

So? Why the hell would they be after duct tape Lupul? After acquiring PAP no less.

Thanks, but no thanks, that's just garbage.

Just because you don't want it to be true doesn't mean it's not...

Despite his injury woes, Lupul still outproduces the majority of the Habs Top 6.

Strawman..

It still makes no ******* sense for the current Montreal Canadiens' lineup to acquire Lupul. That's the argument. There's just no room for him + we have better imho.

Lupul is a RW, is he not? And we have a gaping hole at that position...

No we don't according to MB at his last presser.

+ add his cap hit then add this to Subban's contract & Eller's, does that even add up in your world?

It doesn't in mine.

He'd instantly be the best RW on the team.

I'd personally look elsewhere, thanks to the injuries, but he's still a better winger than anyone not named Pacioretty.

Lupul is pretty terrible, especially with that contract. I wouldn't be surprised if someone from the Leafs organization started that rumour and involved the Habs to try and raise interest in the player.

At 5.2 million cap hit, it's arguable. The guy's last good season was in 2011-2012.

We would obviously be trading someone back to them or we'd make another trade to clear salary.

Yes well that's why I think this thing is just BS. You'd need too many variables confirmed to make this work. It just sounds like something Eklund would write and let his fanbase complete the blanks for fun.

5.2 million for another 4 years, for a player in decline. Even if we trade Bourque & Moen away it's still bad. I thought the era of bad deals like this one was over. Think about it.

You're right then. I had no idea that it was for 4 more years. That's pretty awful.

If he was a guy that consistently played 75+ games a year, sure.

Gallagher + 1st FOR E.Kane???????
(are you ****ing kidding me!!!???).

Should be E.Kane +1st since E.Kane could be a major risk.
(dressing room, on ice, with coach, players,etc....yes I have no proof, but...speculating).

Pacioretty FOR Sharp
(are you kidding me?!!).

Pacioretty's GREAT/CHEAP contract (and 39 goals)...is
here to stay!!!!!!! Every GM wants his contract.

You'd have to give Byfuglien+E.Kane+2nd to tempt me...or Trouba+ E.Kane,etc,etc..... Pacioretty will be a Hab until his contract expires. Great contract. I'll give him 2 more playoff seasons before judging his playoff performances...since his contract is so good!!

It must be breaking his heart that he's no longer a Hab. We should retire his number, what a true captain and figure he was for the community. Rejects a contract offer from the Eastern Conference Finalist to join a 52-point team that's going to be tanking for years. What a competitor. What heart. What soul. What a goatee.

So glad he's gone.

Hahahaha hahhaha
Beautifully said I couldn't agree more!!

You're assuming MB went guns a' blazing for Lupul.

There would of been nothing wrong with taking on Lupul at a reduced cost. For all we know it could of been a 30 second convo.
