I don't really think Romanov is that good, nor do I think he can be more than a decent #4, and with that in mind I'd offer Brannstrom

i wouldnt do a 1st for toffoli but thats more so because of the position ottawa is in

that being said i would do the two 2nds ottawa has this year+ a contract that is expiring this year (sanford/j.brown)

not sure if that is enough for him but you will most likely end up with a top 10 pick in the second round and a bottom 10 pick in the second round

He knew they had an improbable run last year. He knew about Price injury. He knew Weber was probably done. He knew Danault wasn’t likely to return.

He absolutely misread the roster. He thought they were going to compete by adding Savard and Dvorak. He probably thought Suzuki and Canfield were ready to pick up the slack. They weren’t (though I do like both long term).

You can say he knew about Price and Weber, but that doesn't make it any easier to fix in a single summer. He did what he could. Did you expect a complete tear down? That would be ridiculous overreaction.

He knew Price would come back. He knew Edmundson would come back. He was probably counting on Caufield being better, but the Habs aren't lacking in top 9 wingers even with Caufield sent down. Last year they started on fire, but they weren't as good as they looked. This year it's the opposite, and they aren't as bad as they look. Edmundson coming back should help a lot, as of course will Price. The real question mark IMO is Ducharme. I feel he should be getting more out of his roster. Because Bergevin didn't misread it. They are not as bad as this.

why not ? it's obvious a 2-3 year rebuild is exactly what's needed
I think all that is needed is a year like this, where they can go and draft a future #1C. They upset their way to the Stanley Cup final a year ago, and lost one major piece from that run, but a full 2 - 3 year rebuild isn't the best move to make when they already have a decent team aside from having no #1C and only 1 top pair defenseman in Petry. One garbage year could do wonders for the Montreal Canadiens moving forward.

I can't think of any trades for the Jets that would make sense and improve them from the Habs roster that is worth the cost. Wheeler is likely the only one might trade, but even then it wouldn't work b/c no chance Wheeler waives to go to the Habs. I like Anderson but his contract isn't great, specifically his term. I'm ignoring the Habs young kids who they want to build around and not trade.

They were a fringe playoff team who probably wouldn’t have made the playoffs in a normal season. Price was hurt long term and aging, Weber is likely done, and Danault walked. They had a great ride, but if you think they were close to legit coming into the year then idk what to tell you. They have some nice young pieces to build around but the playoffs were likely a 50/50 shot at best. I’m not saying they had to rip everything down to the studs but the patchwork team Bergevin put together wasn’t going to get it done. They needed more of a long term plan for the future. Bergevin was trying to slap a roster together just to slip into the playoffs.

The Habs made two moves already that destroyed them from being on their way...

The God awful Sergachev for Drouin trade and passing on Tkachuk for JK. Those two moves alone change the entire complexion of the Habs. For them to do anything "drastic" now, they would need to put a Suzuki or Caufield in play -- the other guys aren't brining back anything drastic enough to change the entire team. Price's contract is way too massive to get full value for him and Petry isn't playing his best hockey.

I mean, sure, trade Petry for two 2nds -- great. But what does that really do for a full "rebuild"? The Habs are not getting significant returns for Drouin, Hoffman, Armia, Toffoli, Romanov, etc.

Honestly, the Habs are in a very tricky place right now. They went all-in for their miracle run last year and with the loss of Weber, and demotion of Caufield, they are not dealing from a position of strength. And Bergevin has limited prime assets to move to begin with.

Rebuilding the Habs is, perhaps, the most difficult job a GM would have today. They almost need to trade Price for anything, because as long as he's there, Bergevin will have some "excuse" to try to stay competitive and not look to the future -- that is a long and painful road.

What habs should be doing?
- sell off, plan for a 2 to 3 year rebuild

What Bergevin/habs will do?
- make trades to re-tool, try to save the season

You heard it here first

The person that needs to shake things up right now is not Bergevin. It's Geoff Molson.

The first order of business is to fire Bergevin. Nothing's gonna work until that happens.

habs made the cup finals last season; no way Molson fires Bergevin for at least couple years

I'd be interested in trimming the excess (Lehkonen, Armia, Wideman, Paquette, Perreault, Byron), etc we have wayyyyy too many forwards anyway and we need to make some space for youth.

A bad season was to be expected after a long run, only 2 months vacation, and starting the year without Price, Weber, Edmundson, Byron and others.

I'd go for a bottom-5 finish and come back strong next year, with perhaps a new GM.

FORWARDS: We're already pretty deep but need to add a Shane Wright type of guy for some elite talent. Something like Hoffman-Suzuki-Caufield, Anderson-Wright-Toffoli and Drouin-Dvorak-Gallagher looks good to me.

DEFENSE: We'll be going without a true #1 for a while so better get used to it. Gotta find a way to bring in Guhle, Harris, Norlinder slowly but surely, and hope Romanov doesnt bust. Try your luck at acquiring a top pairing guy with Petry likely leaving soon (it can be done, just look at Pietrangelo/Hamilton signings and Seth Jones trade).

GOALIES: Price for the short term, but I wouldn't mind going with a Allen-Primeau tandem next year if he needs to go. Goalies can be had on the market easily; just look at Frederik Andersen for exemple, Markstrom, Grubauer, Kuemper, Campbell, Fleury, etc all have changed address recently. Not worried here.

If it doesn't work out next year, start trading some vets (Tofolli, Drouin, Petry maybe even Price) and go for Bedard.

I offer a third rounder for Lehkonen from the Oilers.

No.

Only works for Edmonton if there is major retention though.

If you require retention on Anderson, then it's no deal.

I don't really think Romanov is that good, nor do I think he can be more than a decent #4, and with that in mind I'd offer Brannstrom

I have my reservations concerning Romanov, but Brannstrom certainly doesn't make me more comfortable.

Out of the question. The offer for Toffoli should start with a 1st. I realize Ottawa might be picking high this season, so you can change that to a projectable prospect. RD or C, preferably.

Josh Anderson for Girard.

Done.

Look at some of those contracts...I think they are 2 maybe 3 years away from starting a rebuild. Invest in development and shop some players around. Ain't nobody paying for multi year 30+ year olds, so expect some low ball offers.

I think MTL should be able to get a 1st for toffoli, a 2nd for chiarot.
A 2nd maybe. A 1st for Toffoli? I doubt it. Unless it's a loan at the deadline by a contender and the pick is at the end of the 1st round. If so, the Habs should take it. They need to rebuild the hard way like PIT, CHI, LOS, EDM, DET did, etc. They need to move Price and Petry at all costs or they can not go full rebuild.

That's why the first move to make is to get rid of him.

MB has to go.

He's not detached enough, he's too emotional when it comes to his ''fetishes players''... He looses his objectiveness.

That has been his mark troughout his tenure...

He believes in his recipe, to the point of stubbornness...

You're not wrong these 2 moves were really bad, but I think the real problem is not being able to draft/develop impactful nhl players since Subban Pac and McDonagh.

As long as we have the same personnel in place, I'm not sure going full rebuild is the right move tbh.

Also seems like your undervaluing a lot of our assets depending on what is a significant return for you. Romanov!? come on man kid is a 21yo defenseman in the NHL. All the others should get a 2nd or more.
