Thought we played really well in the second half of the game. Just couldn't beat Wolf. It happens.

The biggest problem I saw with us tonight is even though Laine hasn't been great as ES, he's always still in coaches mind and is forced to play better matchups. It's what will be great with Demidov next year. Instantly gives us another line for the opposition to worry about.

Laine would have easily scored on him. It was a 1 goal game. We could have used his offensive abilities.

Secondary offense... something we do not have outside of Laine. We have nothing outside of the 1st line.
Maybe but also, maybe not and the score would still end 1-0 flames. Point is, I don't know that Laine would have easily scored on him (and psssst, neither do you ). He's played in games against less skilled goalies and scores exactly zero points, so unless you have a Magic 8 ball, how can you say Laine would have easily (or otherwise) beat him.

Hughes should try addressing the 2C and not have his captain be surrounded with 3 4th line centers instead of sending veiled messages
You don't get that kind of help at the TDL. If they were not going to sell, they should have used their useless glut of picks for some UFAs.

Instead they may lose among family and friends. Stanley cups in a multi-billion dollar NHL are won by professionals first, friends second and definitely not families.

Selling would have been incredibly short sighted.

Basically sticking the middle finger out at Suzuki and the rest of the core when they have done exactly what you wanted to see this year.

The ramifications of eroding that relationship would have gone beyond this year. It becomes a trust issue. Call it friends and family or whatever, but unlike a simulator, morale and culture need to be taken into account.

I honestly wasn't hoping for a 2C now. I think that's something we tackle in the off season. Personally I wanted to C so we could move Beck back to Laval. I don't hate the way he's playing. But I'd much rather see him finish the year in Laval.
I thought that Beck was one of the more energetic Habs tonight. He made a couple of rushes where he flashed his speed; made several nice plays including sending Anderson in alone, did not shy away from contact and had an active stick in the defensive zone.

You can see that the game is slowing down for Beck and that progress was recognized by the coaches who gave Beck a regular shift and even had him on the ice with less than 5 minutes remaining in the third period.

From this game I drew two conclusions: that Hutson was the best player on the ice and that Beck has arrived.

Regardless of what happens this year the future looks very promising.

If Suzuki, Caufield and Hutson do not produce, we don't score and lose. No big surprise. Habs need so much more talent still. Still a rebuilding team after all.
No amount of buying yesterday would have changed that.

Honestly, the more I think about the fact that David Savard was actually a desired piece, and would have returned as much as or more than Luke Schenn, the more annoyed I become that he wasn’t moved.

I like Big David. I joke about him looking exactly like JJ Frankie JJ from “Shoresy” (because he does).

But how do you not move this guy for picks when you’re rebuilding? I don’t care how nice of a guy he is, a second rounder is what allowed them to move up and get Hage last year. Maybe you’re able to grab a prospect like Kieron Walton. Instead we have this guy.

Well if we make no changes then yes, Dach will be tried again as our 2C next season. We might not be able to add a 2C through an FA this offseason. I have a feeling if we do add one, it will be by trade. I personally do like Dach, and when he's on he's a solid player. I just hope if we keep him, it's as a winger.
Obviously hoping Dach makes it back 100% but given two significant surgeries to the same knee, I have even more reticence about his ability to stay healthy.

When he uses his size advantage and rushes to the net, he looks dominant and offers a tantalizing look at how good he can be. However, given his injury situation, he’d be a 3rd line winger for me with the idea that anything he provides, is a bonus. I’m not sold about him as a centre.

I'M not for conspiracy theory...but somebody did say something like that...Hughes going with what the group wanted. And then telling them that we CLEARLY needed more. Hughes gets a high pick, the group also got what they wanted by playing together...everybody is happy....and Hughes makes the moves in the summer.

Based on what translated at the deadline, there is NO MORE waiting period. You have to improve that team THIS summer. Not next deadline.
I mean, that’s not a conspiracy.

The management knows they don’t have what they need to go much further than they are now. They let them play and see what happens. They were never adding players for short term.

Luckily for me. My magic 8 ball is on a roll these days. Knock yourself out. Go check my post history. I’m sure I have some duds but I’ve been saying since day one this team would be night and day with Laine in the lineup.

This whole streak since he showed up in December was mainly because of Laine. We never looked this good in almost a decade. We are a decent team because of him. Remove Laine from the lineup and we are a bottom feeding team yet again.
