As a habs fan no way the habs are moving Juulsen or Sergechev for a 30 year old Edler. If Juulsen is packaged among other players, it would have to bring back a younger top 4 D like Fowler.

Why would any team move a young top 4 d-man for futures, especially one who will be pushing for a playoff spot?

Saw over on Spector, Where Botchford claims that Edler wont waive his NTC. So if this is in fact the case. Then it sounds like Edler would be out of the picture. Maybe Benning moves Tanev instead for a massive overpayment.

If the Habs are truly in Win Now mode, then they need a D that can carry over for possibly a couple seasons.
Edler is not that guy at his salary and play potential.
If they want a Cup, pay the price and get what they need, but that's not Bergevins style. He likes his low cost rehab projects.

Edler is a top pairing d-man right now. Do you honestly think he'll decline so hard and suddenly that he won't at least be a top 4 d-man for the remainder of his contract? He's signed for two more years, not five.

At $5 mil per year and hasn't played a full season since 2012.
Habs don't need part time help. Their looking for full time guys.
:shakehead

How about Vancouver retains 20-25%, as that's the average amount Edler misses.

Weber and Radulov say hello.

Bergevin clearly stated that it's very hard to get players to play in Montreal. They know the pressure it is for players to play here, and the fact that the tax is super high, etc. It's not an ideal location for many players. He's tried very hard to land key players. Those key players unfortunately pick some place else (just this off-season we were in the running to get Fowler, Lucic, and Stamkos). A couple of years ago, Montreal would have also had Panarin, and many others throughout the years... But hey, whatever happened yesterday brought to us where we are today, and we have Weber and Radulov on our team - which is AWESOME!

If nucks don't make playoffs and edler waives for Mtl

Then yes Alex is a good candidate for Habs

No to Edler unless for underpayment. Edler is slowing down, doesn't bring much offensively anymore and is pretty much a second pairing Dmen at this point.

umm beaulieu is on pace to double his point totals to 30 this year as a 23 year old...and he's second in NHL in plus/minus and isn't playing with Weber. he's underrated and it's ridiculous

They need to start blowing their wad to creating a team now, while Price is in his prime. So it's nice to see them thinking about aggressively making moves to improve for the near future.

lol leaf fans..
price will be in his prime for another 6 years.
habs core outside of weber is 27 or younger,
they're not in a huge rush

Points don't mean everything. To me, Beaulieu is not good enough to be considered Top 2. At least not yet. He lacks hockey sense (IQ) which could lead to blunders defensively.

Plus/minus stat is so meaningless, why mention it.

Getting another top 4 is a luxury. How many teams in the NHL can ice four "legit" top 4 defensemen?

If it comes at the same kind of price tag as Petry... Go for it. Otherwise, no thanks.

Has Beauchemin been brought up in here?

Yes. We already have Markov pulling top 4 LD minutes, Beauchemin would not be a good fit here because of it (he can't do top 2 LD minutes for a full season + playoffs at his age).

Maybe, but the Habs need a specific kind of top-4 D. Namely, a strong puck mover and transition defenceman to make up for the loss of Subban. And it really doesn't look like that's a major strength of Elder's.

I'd rather pony up more for Fowler, See what a potential asking price for Del Zotto is. That, or give Beaulieu a real shot.

Beauchemin is better than you think. He played 25 min/per game last year. But it's true, he's comparable to Markov because of age.

I'm not saying Beauchemin isn't good. He's comparable-ish to Markov, but we already have Markov in our team. I wouldn't want to lose Plekanec, an overpaid shutdown C, for something that won't fix much of a problem but will add a big one instead.

Emelin, 30 (Limited NTC, LD, 4.1M signed through 2018),
Plekanec, 34 (C, 6M signed through 2018)
(total 10.1M)

Beauchemin, 36 (NMC, must be protected at Expansion draft, LD, 4.5M signed through 2018)
Soderberg, 31 (Full NTC this season, C, 4.75M signed through 2020)
(total 9.25)

This trade is a way for Colorado to unload Beauchemin's contrat to be able to protect at the expansion draft: Johnson, Barrie and Zadorov. Emelin can play 20min and is very physical.

Edit: Plekanec's age. Thanks CW!

I would do that trade, but try to get a little something extra with it (they need the trade more than we do to protect their other Dmen :snide:).
