Post-Game Talk: Habs blow it against the Islanders in OT

You lose a game that you dominated, got goalied, these things happen in a season. We have won our share of points when Monty stood on his head.

That being said, impossible to win every game but the Habs have gotten the loser point in 3 out of their last 4 loses. This is crucial in qualifying for playoffs.

Funny that the greatest hits of scapegoats come out every time the Habs lose....Matheson. Blaming him for the first goal is crazy. He plays 25 minutes a game - how dare he take the occasional penalty or get burnt on.a rush when he's on his wrong side. The Matheson Standard should be a course offered at McGill.
If anyone cared to notice Horvat who is a very smart player exposed and outmuscled Matheson going around him on his weak side. That is always the risk playing a lefty in that position. It doesn't excuse Monty for letting the second of two pucks to go "Through" him however.

Roy is such a whiney little bitch.

The face he makes everytime some gets a penalty. Like everytime. Dude it's f***ing hockey, penalties are called every f***ing game. Somehow you're surprised every time like you just found out there is a rule book.

Eat my f***ing ass you loser.
Oh he should be sent down then. Sounds like a toxic player to have around

We were dogmeat in overtime , god forbid Hutson tried to do it himself. Nice of the forward to not cover for him though , I wouldn't expect anything less from Laine

I mean just watch Laine on the goal , god forbid the guy has to make a single defensive read in his entire life , guess that's too much to ask from him
I think you have to look that goal again. Laine gome back to check DeAngelo so Monty had only the shooter to deal with.

Leave that BS away.

As a goalie myself, I will only blame a goalie when it's warranted.

He has to stop 1 and 3. Non negotiable. You get into a match up against Sorokin and you have to make the routine saves. You can't give them freebies.

He gave them two. He made no big saves. He was a limiting factor last night.

This is sadly common with Monty, the more he works, the more his mental game declines and he lets in absolute laughers.
I would obviously care more about it
If they thought he really was the goalie 'of the future'
But he's not lol

So everyone freaking out about the obvious 'stop gap' goalie we picked up off waivers living out his childhood dream for a few years just feels like wasted energy for me lol

We've got a real couple of problems to seriously fix (2C, Matheson) before we panic about the goalie who's gone in less than 2 years

Complaining about 'weak goals' just feels like Inferior Fandom imo, the low hanging fruit (don't mean you personally either I mean people in general)
The stuff people used to say about Carey in the odd GDT's was *mind blowing*

Having said all that, yes of course it would of been nice if he saved ONE of those, for sure lol

I'm only looking at it from the perspective of this game.

He's our Huet. Just sitting in the chair until the heir apparent takes it from him.

Laine was Late to come back on Deangelo , he had a good effort to come back but he pressured the same area of the ice as Hutson in the corner in the offensive zone. If he didin't commit so hard offensively he would have been able to catch up to Deangelo and allowed Suzuki to take the shooter.

At 4:50 you can see , Laine makes a useless fly by on Hutsons man , He did not have to commit there ,

At the end of the day it dosen't matter , its 3 on 3 , and like you said Laine had a great backcheck effort , he was just caught too deep offensively so he was late

Now that's better post from you. I appreciate.

At first you just said Laine did Laine things and was lazy ass bitch. He read Hutson play wrong, but Suzuki was there to take pass away, that Monty had only shooter.

I didn’t like the way Suzuki played the 2 on 1. I know you tend to give the goalie the shooter, but I felt he could’ve played it a bit better. Nice comeback for a point at least.
Monty has GOT to be better. He’s let in probably 4 weak goals in the last 2. It’ll be interesting to see if they throw Dobes to the wolves on Saturday or come back with Monty.

Everybody could have been better for sure , even Suzuki probably could have pressured the shooter , just a bad OT shift by everybody

I said the exact same thing last night when people were blaming Hutson on that play.

Imagine saying Hutson was at fault at all on that, and being completely blind to seeing Laine pinch in for nothing.

It's like nobody pays attention to the play away from the puck.

But it's absurd to say that most blame of that goal was Laine's fault o_O

Ultimately it wasn't even that great of a look, Horvat just beat Monty clean. It felt like everyone ignored that DeAngelo was even there, including Horvat. He was determined to fire that puck and it was the right call.

Sorokin made about a dozen similar stops throughout the night, that's just the way it goes sometimes.

Yea, it was a weak ass goal to give up, it was clear he was going to shoot, and he got beat shortside (again) and was not properly on angle.

Laine didn't help, he should have stayed back as (clearly) Lane went for a rush.

Hutson rushing in is not what caused the odd-man rush, nor the weak goal against the goalie.

Hutson should have held on to the puck. The confusion came when Hutson lost the puck. Sorokin caught it. Instead of following Horvat and skate back to the defensive zone he tried to fix his mistake. Laine was already half way committed to DeAngelo. The play happened fast but Laine probably expected Hutson to follow Horvat.
If you have a chance to look at the replay again, here's how I see it playing out. Hutson tries to go 1 on 2. He's alone on the attack. But it is a 1 in 2 and is in no way is a move should give up a scoring chance the other way, although it is likely to give up possession. Laine is all the way at the blue line when Hutson is trying to shoot within a couple of feet of the goalie. Hutson doesn't get a dangerous shot off and the goalie easily passes the puck to a teammate. At this point the momentum of Hutson's rush has him behind the net and behind another Islander player who starts skating up ice, and Laine is still in the high slot. At this point Laine has to see that Hutson is behind the net and not available for defensive duties. Instead, Laineglides towards the puck carrier, leaving two Islanders streaking the other way and only Suzuki back. The puck carrier easily passes to one of the two Islanders for a two on one.

There was no reason for Laine to glide toward the puck Carrier and ignore that in 3 on 3 only one man is back. It was just a bad 3 on 3read where offense turns to defense when possession changes, or even before. He's only 26. Hopefully he can get better at 3 on 3, because I want him on the ice on 3 on 3.

He wont be a consistent NHL starter for at least another 3 years. He hasn't played a single professional game and is still in college.
Okay, I’ll finalize the trade for Shesterkin tonight. Happier now? I also think that Fowler will be the “starter” within a year and a half.
