This isn't a bad take at all, and I am a Lane Hutson superfan. If you watch Makar (as an example) a lot of his offense comes from making the right play, but these aren't the plays you see in the highlight packages.

However, I think Lane Hutson knows this too and his game in NCAA showed improvement in this as the season went on. Especially in the playoff games vs. Providence and Merrimack where things got tighter, I can remember a number of plays he made that were simple, good plays. Probably the best example is his OT winner vs. Merrimack. There's a fantastic angle that shows how he walks tot he center of the ice and only shoots it once there is multiple players screening the goalie.

I suspect next season you'll see more of the "simple" plays in his game as he starts to position himself more for pro-hockey, but he'll never fully lose the electric plays that make him the player he is. It is going to be more about deciding when to and when not to do those electric type plays.

I watched quite a few of @montreal Hutson’s videos and I’m actually fairly shocked at the success rate of his plays. Especially with his style of play and being a freshman.

I could be wrong but I don’t feel he over handles the puck at all. I feel most of his dipsy doodling creates and opens up lanes. It always feels more like a means to an end than for its own sake. Some of it may bleed into that latter category but it rarely if ever costs the team or puts him in danger.

Tldr I think he plays pretty well within his limits imo. I’m willing to defer to anyone who’s seen more of him than myself

Is Austria/Reinbacher eliminated?

Yes, only top 4 of each group goes through. Austria finished 14th out of 16 teams, so they survive relegation, but their tournament is over. Hungary & Slovenia are relegated.

Latvia beat Switzerland in OT in their game today, so actually finished 3rd in Canada's division. Czech Republic finished 4th. A tremendous tournament for Latvia just getting to QF is a huge achievement for them. That's a top 8 finish!

USA vs Czech Republic
Switzerland vs Germany
Canada vs Finland
Sweden vs Latvia

Are the Quarter-Finals games. All are played Thursday. I think Canada can beat Finland. Finns haven't been all that good.

Same
Hutson's success rate with his dipsy doodling is pretty high.

I understand most of your arguments, and I think they should definitely draft one of the top 4 if they are available.

What I don’t understand is the “tell me how many of those guys were selected 5th”. Reinbacher is playing in one of the best leagues in the world, he’s doing things that even older player or ex NHL players can’t do.

There might be better talent in other leagues, but the pace and play style in the Swiss league is close to the NHL than what you get in most leagues. It’s not like he’s playing in the Slovenian 3 division or in the Irish super league. How many players were drafted out of the DEL at 3rd overall before Stutzle ?

Now, I agree that he isn’t a playmaker but he can find passing lanes when he needs to, he can do bank passes, he’s good on breakouts passes and he puts the put on the net. He won’t hit 60pts, but his ability to take a lot of minutes on the ice will put him in situations where he will produce and help his team 5v5.
He has the potential to hit 60 pts IMO, But it will depend of his usage. If he gets top PP ice time, then 60 pts should be easy to get, if a kid like Hutson quarterback our top PP unit, then I could see Reinbacher getting around 40-50 pts per year. His pts production could also vary depending of the quality of the fowards group. But in any cases, we would get a 2-way beast on the back end.

Barron looks like a sheep on the ice, a bit like Kirby at the beginning of the season until he started using his size.

Matheson, for all the talk about his skating, can play physical and chippy but I just don't see that in Barron. I'd prefer to keep Harris then Barron at this point.

I would rather keep Barron than Harris personally. Cant see more than a serviceable 3rd pairing in Harris, Barron still has a decent shot at becoming a 4th D. But if the Jets want Barron to be added to the potential Dubois deal, I have 0 issue.

He hasn't done anything - good or bad. He's just sort of there.

He has 1a, and is +/- 0 in 7 games. He moves the puck.

If Winnipeg really wants him for PLD, I'm starting to be OK with that.
Where did it come from?

Fair enough, I do like what I saw from him this year. There’s around 8-10 defensemen a season that pass the 60pts threshold every year, so chances are probably slim. Although many in that 50+ range aren’t “playmaking” defensemen but they play so much that by sheer number of opportunities they get a lot of points.

Even if he doesn’t, I rather a 45pts defensemen that can play a lot at 5v5 and do a good job than a guy who’s there just to score points. There’s just so much more value there.

Carlson has been more impactful, but as you know this is a difficult tourney for 18 yo’s. Fantilli kind of looks like he did at the WJC…..playing like a 5 tool baseball player who isn’t getting the ball his direction & not hitting? Maybe it’s Bedard effect cuz nobody’s really standing out.
When I try to assess a player I find it instructive to watch how opposing players react to that player. When Fantilli has the possession of the puck opposing players are immediately aware of this kid’s great speed and react accordingly. Their pinches become less aggressive creating more time and space for Fantilli and his line mates. These opposing players are, in most cases, experienced European veterans. At 18, Fantilli, already shows that he has the dynamic skating to drive the play. A perfect example is the difference in tempo between Canada’s first power play unit and the second unit on which Fantilli plays. In my opinion, he needs to simplify his play. It’s not necessary for him to try to beat three opponents on each rush. He should chip and chase in most cases. With his speed and size advantage he will win most puck races and intimidate most defencemen who have the misfortune of meeting this raging bull in the corner. As I have earlier posted, to this writer, Fantilli looks like a young Stamkos. And how did that turn out for Tampa?

Does TSN not have the Canada vs Finland or USA vs Czech games???

My guide shows that Switzerland vs Germany comes on TSN 1, 4 and 5 but the USA game doesn't come on any of them.

Then it shows Sweden vs Latvia on 2 channels but no Canada vs Finland.

I guess it depends on if you'd take the 100% chance at a #5 or the 25% of a #4

We definitely have to be patient with Barron. How he looks now, isn't necessarily how he will look at 25.

A lot of promising prospects from his draft class haven't yet found success in the nhl: Lafreniere, Byfield, Rossi, Alexander Holtz, Dylan Holloway, etc...

I would include him in a Dubois trade. But if the Jets are still asking for Dach, I can't see them taking him as the center piece. Rather, they'll wait to try get a better offer for him as a rental by the TDL.

I have the USA vs Czech game on right now on TSN even though the guide showed Switzerland vs Germany.
