If he really does sign for 8x8 then Dubas shouldn't have traded him. Will be pretty annoyed lol
See what you don't understand is that maybe he wanted out and it's not unusual for a player to price himself out in negotiations only to go and sign for a similar amount for a new team. It's a very old tactic and obvious. Jake and his camp wouldn't negotiate and then acted all butt hurt so as not to lose public opinion and went and re-signed with Carolina - which I have zero issue with.

Guentzel was going to go no matter what. It's odd some blokes on our Pens board couldn't accept that. The Penguins are an absolute shit show under Sullivan and he likely wouldn't see the playoffs for a few more seasons if he stayed.

You'd be a moron if you signed with a team just a couple of days before free agency. Only a stupid offer should persuade you as the player has 100% off all the leverage. You can whine about the 8th year as much as you want but 31 other teams can bid for your services....
Or when he was dealt to the Hurricanes and he was playing there, he realized this was a good fit for him and he wants to be there. He could wait for free agency but it could mean that if he decides to pick Carolina as his destination, he now might not get that 8th year and they've moved on.

Might seem dumb to blokes that a player might actually want to be somewhere instead of test the market, for whatever odd reason.

This a lot of people value things outside and above money.

Probably no coincidence that the three most frequently mentioned UFA suitors — Vancouver (Mikheyev), NYR (Trouba), and Tampa (Sergachev) — are clearing cap space…

Once Free Agency hits, that offer is no longer on the table, as the team making the offer can also participate in free agency.

If you want to play in Carolina, then hitting free agency hurts your chances of playing in Carolina.

Going to give up a great landing spot in case you can get a few extra bucks to spend the next 7 years in Ottawa?

Elliotte Friedman’s post-draft podcast makes it sound like Guentzel is testing free agency. He lists Tampa as the favorite, and suggests that there are a couple teams “out west” that are interested in trading for his rights just to talk to him.

When he speaks about Necas at the end of the podcast, he says that Carolina may circle back to re-signing Necas “now that they’ve lost Guentzel”.

They should probably just qualify him for a year and try to get like a first or two 2nds at this point. Of course they could do a longterm extension but I wouldn’t do that. They will probably target Henrique, Ghost, or Toffoli.
