I did a deep dive into the thing Tocchet loves most after huge defenseman, right shot centers.

There's nobody remotely good enough who's playing on a team that will miss the playoffs, with the exception of Claude Giroux. I think the team is going to take a serious look at acquiring him, after figuring out the defence.

I wanted Giroux last year before I knew about his preference for staying in Ottawa. He fit the need for a winger for Petey (plays both RW and C), would have fixed the PP1 spot, and would've given the team a right shot ace in the face-off dot.

The need on defense this year though far outweights any forward acquisition, and I doubt Giroux wants anything to do with the western conference. Good thing is a lot of teams out East look to be in dissaray, so hopefully something materializes on the blueline front.

I think there's a chance Giroux waives this time for his last chance at the cup, I'd have to imagine he'd be okay with a few months away from the family. I did the math and the team can actually fit in a lot of help at the deadline. The Canucks are in a much better spot than people seem to think, in regards to the salary cap.

This is actually cap compliant by about $15,000, though it would cost so much to make this a reality.

Even if they can’t get a D in a Hoglander trade, if there’s a forward out there with speed and special teams utility, they should explore that. Especially if he’s cost controlled.

Hog + 2 x 2nds for an extended M Pettersson is something I think both parties would like to see

Meanwhile, let's check in with our ol' friend Eklund.

Eklund gets a bad wrap for being wrong a lot, but I think that's just the territory of reporting literally everything you hear.

I remember he posted "things to look out for this summer" in like 2009 and one was Kovalchuk signing a 15 year deal and everyone thought he was insane, then they did a 17 year deal a month or two later.

also not an upcoming UFA and has considerably worse stats relative to his teammates
I included him because he's almost certainly available and has a skillset that is coveted come playoff time. While his hockey card stats don't pop, he's very good defensively, particularly on the PK, and is a top 5-10 faceoff guy leaguewide. Personally, I see the additional year under contract as a significant bonus.

I'm also fine with the extra year, but it will drastically increase the cost, Nashville probably expects to compete for the playoffs next year even if they're sellers this year and would also want to keep him for that reason.

Quick notes from Dhaliwal on the Hoglander trade rumours:

  • Get the trade watch going
  • Penguins are super interested
  • Capitals and Blue Jackets are looking at him as well
  • Blue Jacket’s AGM at the Canucks vs Red Wings game
  • Team’s are betting that he will get back to last year’s production
  • Return won’t be Ivan Provorv or Damon Severson
  • Mentions Cole Sillinger as a possible return

He’s going to turn into a perennial 30+ goal scorer on another team in a top 6 role & PP1 time.

Canucks should be careful here, they have an excellent bottom 6 player that can move up to the top 6 anytime and contribute. That kind of quality depth is really important.

Awfully quiet out there. Hopefully the calm before the storm.

I thought Hoglander played pretty well last night, but there is no way he will make it under head coach Rick Tochett.

It will be interesting what Allvin can pull out of his hat dangling Hoglander. Everyone other than Canuck fans seem to think Hoglander won't generate much, but I think we could be surprised here.

This should be interesting.

I can't imagine Nashville would be remotely interested in addressing their gaping hole at #1C by signing a $2mm PK/defensive specialist C - when they have three guys fighting the 3/4C spots already, - but stranger things have certainly happened.

He won't be cheap, as nearly every team with cup aspirations will be looking for ways to stiffen up their spine for the post season, and a big battle tested C who thrives in the pressure cooker is going to be on pretty much every wish list....especially after playing a non trivial role on the most recent cup winner.

edit, maybe a package of Ian Cole and Stenlund can be had for a semi reasonable $$

It’s probably gonna be a surprising good return for Hoglander seeing as how everybody thinks he’s cooked, hopefully it doesn’t sting like Podz ( still sad )
