Reaves Suspension
  • Thought it would be more than Jeannot
  • Sees this as a worse hit than Jeannot on Boeser and Reaves has been suspended before
  • Only question was whether it was going to be an in-person hearing
Salary Cap
  • League has been fortunate and the revenues have been good
  • Some worry about the USA local television deals
  • Other revenues around the league have been very good
  • Supposed to be a 50/50 revenue split between league and players; this was changed a bit during COVID and if it was still 50/50 then the cap would be over 100m
  • NHL knows that the cap will take a big jump when a new CBA is negotiated
  • The league and NHLPA could look to smooth out the cap increases
  • Players support the idea of smoothing it out
  • Possible to get the new CBA done early
  • Believes there will be a conversation about the cap increasing to around 97m next season
Canucks
  • More has been asked of Lankine and Silovs than was expected
  • Demko injury isn’t linear
  • Doesn’t sense the Canucks are panicking but the team doesn’t like how they are playing
  • Does think they will address the defence at some point
  • A lot of problems can be solved by a lot of people playing better and he thinks that’s the way the Canucks look at it
  • Question is how long do they wait
  • Jim Rutherford likes to get a jump on the trade deadline
  • Canucks are definitely looking around
  • Calls the Canucks “impatient” and “annoyed”
Boeser
  • Describes the injury as a “head/whiplash thing”
  • Not a linear injury
  • Have to wait until he feels okay
  • Canucks are not going to rush anyone back from injury
  • Has been told when you have that concussion-esque, whiplash-esque sort of thing you have to let it play out
  • Once he starts skating it will be another week or two before he gets back and he hasn’t started skating
Trade Market
  • Thinks things are picking up a little bit
  • Predators really want “to do some stuff”; looking for a high level centre and defenceman
  • Lots of talk between teams but not sure of the amount of actions
  • Canucks, Predators, and Blackhawks have been very active in talking to team
  • Blackhawks are trying to find Bedard help
  • Cap is still an issue for teams
Kaprizov and the Wild
  • Will become one of the highest paid players in the league
  • Wild prepared him more than anyone else
Miller
  • Not surprised he got benched before others because Miller can handle it
  • Canucks feel he’s a little bit better when he’s pissed off and mad at the world
  • Thinks he’s bang up a bit
  • Get the sense that rattling his cage every once-in-a-while is good for him
  • When he gets benched it also gets other players attention
  • Tocchet has had enough of the way this team has started the year

Wonder if the Wild are going to offer a max deal to Kaprizov. There are 32 other teams that would offer the moon.

I don't know why, but I am getting Nate Schmidt vibes from these Pettersson Pittsburgh rumours.

Someone please allay my concerns, I can't say I've watched him a ton.

Boeser
  • Not with the team
  • Is making improvement; is working out
Miller
  • Prides himself on playing through injuries and has played through worse
  • Team is at a big disadvantage without both Miller & Pettersson producing and Boeser out
Demko
  • Full participant in practice
  • Expected return is imminent; sooner rather than later
  • No specific date in mind
  • Was told, this morning, that he looks good
  • Want to see more reps
  • Like what they are seeing in practice
  • Well known work ethic around the league
Trade Market
  • Canucks do not have a strong eagerness to acquire a defenceman but there is an interest
  • Around USA Thanksgiving and the 20 game mark, every GM is looking for a top-4 defenceman
  • Start looking around the league at players aren’t a perfect fit
  • Sabres, for instance, are willing to do something big
  • Doesn’t get the sense that anyone is close on a deal
  • Certainly want to address concerns with their defence
  • Would like to upgrade at centre
  • Sellers not quite ready to sell yet
  • Flames are one-step forward and two-steps back; status quo
  • Peyton Krebs is a contract situation worth monitoring
  • Kevyn Adams feeling some internal pressure

Why would they not be eager to acquire a defenceman? It's clear as a dog's balls this team's back end will be their undoing.

Almost every team in the league is looking for blueline help. and for the most part, they have deeper prospect pools and more trade chips to offer than the Canucks.

Unfortunately I just don't see anything happening until February-March. At that point the teams that are below the playoff bar are starting to accept their fate and are looking to move some of their impending UFA's.

But the demand isn't going to go away. And if Allvin can pull off something like he did with Zadorov last season, it's going to take a minor miracle.

Not Canucks-related but some trade chatter from around the league.

Boston Bruins
  • Elias Lindholm hasn’t contributed offensively
  • Charlie Coyle, Morgan Geekie, and Pavel Zacha could be traded
  • Looking at bringing in someone who has “some jam” and can contribute offensively
  • Some concern within their management about the state of the team that could lead them to making a trade
Edmonton Oilers
  • Mentions David Savard as a target for a number of teams including the Oilers
  • Looking around at the defensive options available
  • Don’t have the assets to acquire a high-end defenceman
Trade Market
  • More trade discussion this season than past one going into USA Thanksgiving
  • There are teams that are looking to make moves out of necessity
  • Predators have been looking for a 2nd line centre since training camp
  • Sabres are looking to make a hockey trade
  • A lot of the Ducks assets are hurt
  • Teams are doing their due diligence
  • Candiens and Blue Jackets are exploring their options

Could just be posturing through the media so they don't get bent over
GMs have made calls. But no need to discuss it with the public. I mean it’s not exactly what could be out there is a game changer. In terms of what Van wants which is more of a strong defender.
No to Matheson and Savard (has not played well). Fowler would not waive his 3 team trade list for Van. Dum? Not sure that does anything aside from depth? Provorov? Bigger fish but don’t have the assets.

Slim pickings for Dmen these days. They are like Corners and OT or OL in general, in the nfl. Rare to find good ones and you need multiple of them on a good team

"Marcus Pettersson is the most likely candidate to be on the move. League sources said the Edmonton Oilers and Vancouver Canucks have interest in the lanky defenseman, and there’s every reason to believe other teams will covet him. In the final year of his contract, Pettersson is set to break the bank when free agency opens next summer. The Penguins value Pettersson, but they value replenishing their system considerably more. This is essentially the Guentzel situation all over again.

Pettersson is as good as gone."

From The Athletic

Edmonton has zero young NHLers, zero NHL ready prospects, and no 1st this year.

exit with possession is any play where a defenseman gets the puck out of the zone and the next play is a controlled touch is by either that player or a teammate. it can be either a pass or the player carrying the puck over the line themselves. if a player fires it past center and there's a scrum for the puck that's a clear not an exit with possession regardless of which team controls at that point
ok

so then the defence is above average at getting the puck out but slightly below average in doing so with possession.

that really does not tell me much about their transition game. is there a stat that assess the type of clearances teams attempt and complete? there's a huge difference between a travis green style dump it blindly to centre to buy a little time and an intentional but risky breakout play that only works half the time but results in forwards gaining possession with speed and defeating the other team's neutral zone defence.

anyway, i appreciate the response but i guess you can call me unmoved by this stat. from my eye test, i just don't see the dzone transition problems the team faces being acute or a major problem. i think they get the puck out most of the time in an orderly fashion and i think they give up possession often because they try an appropriate amount of risky transition play aimed at getting through the neutral zone. i think the team has success setting up forwards for entries but the forwards are struggling with executing those entries and have almost completely given up on the patient possession first ozone game they thrived on last year in favour of a lot of urgent scrambling that leads to early low percentage shot selection and a failure to work their way to grade a scoring chances.

Someone please allay my concerns, I can't say I've watched him a ton.

In regards to stats relative to his teammates, Pettersson is far and away the Penguins best possession player this year.

His Corsi and Fenwick stats are 5.7%, and 6.3% above his team average at 5v5, compare that to players like Crosby (2.3%, 1.1%) and Malkin (1.7%, 1.8%).

The two season where Schmidt was in Vegas prior to Vancouver, his 5v5 Corsi and Fenwick stats were -4.9%, -4.1% and -3.6%, -4.0%. When he was in Vancouver, he was -1.7% or so in Corsi and neutral in Fenwick.
