Brannstrom Desharnais has been a fine bottom pairing. Unfortunately Soucy Myers has also been a fine bottom pairing in top 4 deployment.

That's been because of Brannstrom, not Desharnais. Desharnais away from Brannstrom is a disaster. Brannstrom needs to move up, Desharnais needs to move out.

And on Desharnais: he’s been horrible. And I know he can and may improve, and hopefully will, but this isn’t a team at the stage where we should be targeting projects that may or may not be NHL calibre, and paying them $2 million or year or whatever we are paying.

Still lots of time but as of now looks like a major pro scouting miss.
The view that Desharnais has been bad should lead to an even more positive assessment of Brannstrom, who has been paired with him most of the time, I believe. I really do think it's time to try Brannstrom with Hronek, despite the pressure Hughes put on Tocchet by saying he wanted Hronek on his pairing.

Brannstrom and Hronek. Hughes and ... OK I admit it's a problem. Some surprising defensive specialist rhd they can pick up in a trade for less than a genuine top four guy.

I think Brannstrom has been good but his minutes have been pretty sheltered. He did play a bit with Hughes last game I think with Hughes on the right side and that pairing looked great, at least in the offensive zone, so perhaps a Brannstrom - Hronek pairing could work. Not really sure who you put with Hughes though. Probably need to get external help.

But they’re losing games because that second pairing is getting shredded, much more urgent need.

brannstrom has been okay but there's zero chance this team goes into the playoffs with two defenders under 5'10 and one or two others under 6'1

Yes, medium term they need to upgrade but trade prices are astronomical so they need to have a coaching solution that utilizes their current assets until the trade market loosens up.

I’ve never heard of blue sky until you mentioned it and did some digging. Interesting. Decentralized social networking.

I don't even care about that. I want everyone to use bluesky because no twitter links work for me on desktop anymore and I rarely have any idea what the f*** anyone is talking about anymore unless I go read the thread on my phone, in which case the screen is so full of ads that I have to strain my eyes so much to read anything that I get a migraine and then I become irritable and act unkindly to those around me which hinders my professional advancement and lowers my earning potential and it will be specifically @Vector's fault when this inevitably renders me homeless and alienated from my loved ones.

I accept responsibility and revel in it.

Any discussion of the state of the Canucks blueline stats and ends with Myers. They re-upped him to a three-year deal at $3m a season.

That's a reasonable number for a guy who can play in your top four.....but it's a bad contract for a guy who can't. And right now, Myers can't.

So the Canucks will almost be forced to join the long line of teams searching for somebody to anchor a second pairing. And whoever they acquire, won't come cheap.

The Stillman trade is a WTF trade. Buffalo actually targeted Stillman. I recall Sabres fans saying we were wrong about Stillman after watching him play a few games. Don’t know what happened to him but he hasn’t seen NHL action since.

On the other hand, maybe Bloom isn’t an asset. Sabres fans were high on him but in reality he was the second last pick in the 3rd round signed to an ELC whose development had stalled. I liked a Bloom at the time of the trade as well but in hindsight he’s probably a guy Allvin chooses not to sign if he had a choice. Then again, it seems that management was wrong about where Bloom’s game was at given his development path.

Only in the sense that we didn't get a bonified NHler out of piece of a garbage. I wouldn't say they were wrong at all. Not every prospect makes the big leagues.
