I love that Lars Eller has had literally the exact same 13-18 goal, 25-35 point season for 15 years in a row. He must have the flattest career arc of any player in NHL history, which is probably why it always catches me off-guard that he's 35 years old now.
Pius Suter imo fits this description and I wouldn’t be surprised if he turns out to be an Eller clone.

Hall of Fame
  • Believes that the HHoF, for the most part, gets the selections right and if they don’t get the selection right the first time, they find a way to adapt
  • Lindros didn’t get in right away but had better numbers than Neely; was kept out because of off-ice stuff but also because of how vocal he was about concussions
  • For Mogilny, an adjustment needs to be made for scoring era
  • Conversation about cultural differences that may exist
  • Understands that Mogilny isn’t a first-ballot guy and is okay if he never gets in
  • Roenick waited a while because he was outspoken & got himself in trouble
  • Selection committee changes; Iginla and Olczyk appointed
Current Trade Market
  • Sabres’ Kevyn Adams would like to do something but hasn’t found a partner yet
  • Teams have to give to get
  • Maybe 10-12 teams that could make the Eller deal today due to cap reasons
  • If Penguins wanted to make a bigger move, needed to open up space first
Pittsburgh Penguins
  • Shine has worn off Dubas
  • Fenway Sports Group gave Dubas a nearly unprecedented contract because it was a difficult job to take due to their roster problems
  • Quadrupled down on a roster that was tripled down on
  • Have gone in the wrong direction; bottom-5 in points percentage
  • Haven’t won a playoff round since 2018
  • If their players don’t want to go anywhere, they don’t have to because of NMCs
  • Not even sure ownership would let Dubas trade some of their high profile players
Canucks
  • They are the one team that in the last 12-14 months will find a way to make a trade regardless of excuses
  • Management’s mentality is that they’ll do whatever it takes to make the team better
  • Won’t wait around for a market to develop
  • Will go out and pursue their own thing
  • Canucks have made an incredibly powerful statement to the league with this
  • Trading Sprong helps accrue cap space
  • If Rutherford tries something and it doesn’t work, will fix the problem
Lekkerimaki
  • Never viewed him as a trade piece
  • Management are believer and are high on him
  • Thought there was a real chance that he would play a playoff game
David Jiricek
  • Blue Jackets have fumbled his development
  • Has shown more than enough to be a staple in their top-4
  • Jerked around by previous coaching staff; shuttled between NHL and AHL
  • Is really talented but hasn’t been able to show it
  • Jiricek is probably frustrated
  • Doesn’t really have anything left to prove in the AHL
  • Does not make any sense for the Blue Jackets to trade him
GM Meetings
  • A lot of talk and no action
  • Discussion about the NCAA change and how it relates to the CHL; no one knows how it will impact the NHL
  • Update on cut-resistant equipment; only 55/708 skaters have worn a neck guard; will continue to educate players and encourage them to wear them
  • Asking GMs what changes they’d like to see made to the CBA; bigger term limits placed on contracts, changes to LTIR, playoff salary cap, are mentioned
  • NHL draft will be in late June and will be decentralized with the TV part taking place in Los Angeles
Next CBA
  • Don’t know enough to know if it will get done early
  • Has spent way too much time covering lockouts
  • Is concerned that the NHL sees their relationship with the NHLPA is so comfortable right now that the NHL may be underestimating Marty Walsh and what the players will ask for
Montreal Canadiens
  • Not enough of an appreciation for Mike Matheson’s season last year
  • Top-20 in defencemen scoring and under 5m cap hit
  • Canadiens are looking to add a top-4 defenceman
  • They believe in their young defencemen but want to bridge the gap better; may be willing to trade future assets for one

Usually when an offensive player sees their ice time dwindle, not played in the third, and taken off the powerplay, it's a sign that they get moved out pretty shortly. Happened with Kuzmenko and Sprong.

As someone who had to wear neck guards growing up and hating them I am not surprised. Light choking is not my kink.

Petterson is on the low end of what the Canucks need to make that jump into contender status. Ideally, you get someone who's closer to what Noah Hanafin is for Vegas, but I'm not sure that caliber of player is going to be available this year (and might be more expensive than last year).

Agreed. Pettersson would be a fine addition but I rather try to find another Hronek type that can be a stud for us in the long-term and hopefully pair well with Willander.

Provorov with an extension may be that guy as he has the type of all around game that you'd want in a #3 D-man but does have some warts or at least inconsistencies. Haven't watched him closely enough to confidently say that he'd be worth the investment.

But whoever that guy is, he'd be worth paying a 1st++ for.

Thought the tidbits on Brannstrom were a little bit interesting. Mostly because there seems to be a feeling within the Canucks fandom that Brannstrom is a lock to remain on the roster all year. To me he's a guy they may look to upgrade on if they get a chance.

  • Unlikely to risk placing him on waivers in the short-term
  • Canucks now view him as of it’s top-8 defenders
  • Originally viewed as a cap throw-in
  • Isn’t sure if Brannstrom has secured a starting spot
  • Important that poor performances, like against Edmonton, don’t stack
  • The sense Drance gets is that there’s internal questions about his size
  • His overall competitiveness and transition ability has been noticed by management
  • NHL defencemen that aren’t big, mean, & defensively sound nor elite offense producers will always have a small margin of error

The bolded is definitely important. Poor performances will need to be spread apart for the coaches not to lose trust in him.

But at the same time, it's like people are waiting for him to make mistakes / trying to find reasons not to believe in him. Even the best D-men make mistakes, and after all he's a bottom-pair guy; if he moved the puck well, skated well, and made a lot less mistakes, he'd be a legit top-4 D-man.

We'll have to see if his lack of size is an issue in the playoffs but he's definitely not the type that plays scared.

I have this hunch we see a trade tomorrow. A lot of guys are up right now. Hoglander + for a dman. Get em ready with a practice, possibly two, before the back to back this weekend.

Of course I’m pretty delusional so there’s like a 99.9% chance nothing happens. I just can’t help but feel tomorrow is the perfect day for a trade.

Coming back to a thread and having players referred to as Pettersson is starting to become mildly confusing. I know the difference and context is largely enough of an explanation, but we may need to differentiate going forward.

I'm keeping an eye on the following players

LD:
1) Marcus Pettersson- Pittsburgh has indicated that they are selling. Pettersson is on an expiring deal and it's a matter of when, not if he's getting dealt. Cost will likely be D-Petey + a 2nd round pick. Also has history with Allvin/Rutherford. This is the likely move here.

2) Washington Trio (Chychrun, Sandin, Fehervary)- Washington has a ton of cap locked up on their D-core, and one of the 3 on the left side could shake loose. Chychrun is the likely one to be dealt as he's an expiring contract, but if he's re-signed, that could lead to a Sandin trade. Would be a great second-pairing LD behind Hughes.

3) Cam Fowler- Veteran presence who is stuck on a terrible Ducks team. He should've been traded last year. The Ducks asset management with their older players is pretty bad (Fowler, Vatrano, Gibson, etc), but Fowler might shake loose if the right deal is made. Would be an unbelievable add, and could be similar to Dan Hamhuis back in 2010. Retention would be needed in a trade though. Luckily the Ducks have all 3 retention spots open.

4) Nicolas Hague/Brayden McNabb- Vegas is likely going to make another big trade this year, so clearing out some cap room in their D-core might help with a move. I think they'll try to trade McNabb before Hague, and McNabb does seem like a Tocchet player. But I'd much rather have Hague. Think he would be excellent on the Canucks with a bigger opportunity.

5) Mario Ferraro- Not sure if San Jose trades him, but if they do, Vancouver should be all over it. Would be a huge upgrade on the second-pairing. Solid defensive defenseman.

I don't think Gavrikov gets dealt at this point, and I don't see Provorov re-signing in Vancouver if traded. That could rule both out for now.

RD:

1) Rasmus Andersson- Going to take a lot to get him, but there's already trade history between Vancouver and Calgary, and so this could happen again. Can carry his own pairing and would be the perfect fit on this team. The cost will be astronomical though.

2) Connor Murphy- A solid defensive defenseman who could play on all three pairs. He's at a reasonable cap hit and has the size and physicality that Tocchet and Foote love. He might be a more reasonable add than Andersson based on the return, and Chicago has 2 retention slots open as well, so that might be an option.

3) David Jiricek- A lot of people think that Columbus won't deal Jiricek, but I honestly think he'll be traded at some point this year. There seems to be way too much bad blood between player and organization. If there's some miraculous way to make a Jiricek deal without dealing Lekkerimaki or Willander, you do it today. Would lock in an elite right-side D-core for the next 5-7 years.

4) David Savard- The Habs are a tire-fire, and Savard is an upcoming UFA. I'm not the biggest fan of him, but he's a solid defensive defenseman and definitely an upgrade on Desharnais/Juulsen. I think Desharnais + Picks/Prospects goes back if a trade is made here.

This is incredibly dramatic. All Canadian youth leagues have mandated neck guards since forever.
No, it's my personal experience. I didn't like neck guards. I also don't like turtle necks. There is nothing dramatic about it. I feel claustrophobic with things around my neck. It's not an uncommon sentiment.

How much have you watched him play? A few times per year when he’s in the lineup against the Canucks? Would you feel the same if he wasn’t highly drafted and from BC?
No I probably wouldn’t feel the same if he wasn’t highly drafted and from BC.

Yep. There’s something to be said about year to year consistency.

Suter I feel is a player primed to have a career year. This might be the year.

Watching him play last year I kept thinking that if only he had better finishing ability or even puck luck. Cause he gets himself into excellent scoring positions and he does have a great shot including a one timer but he whiffs on so many. So on the one hand I feel he is capable of scoring 25+ a season. On the other hand I see why he hasn’t been a top 6 fixture.

Only players out of Pittsburgh I'd have interest in would be Marcus Pettersson, Lars Eller, and Drew O'Connor. All three fit various needs of the team (although Eller and O'Connor are not really physical), are rentals, and have caphits you could find creative ways to fit in.
O'Connor impresses me a lot when I watch them. I think he can still evolve into more with the right usage. Really fast, big, and when he gets a half stride on you he's gone.

He's not really a top-4 D-man.
I beg to differ. He has NHL size, plays 17-19 mins a game and is a + player on a shit team. He's young and should come at a low cost because he's in ruff doghouse right now. He's on a cheap 1 year contract too. So if we can get him for a b prospect and a day 2 pick there's no harm in cutting ties next year if we want to let him go.

Last year he thrived when playing with dahlin. I see him as a #4 guy that can stick around for a while.

I'd like to play him with Hughes and bump Hronek down to play with sushi.

It's also a big reason I feel he's a must for us to re-sign. He's far too versatile a player, and if there comes a point we need to fit someone else in, better to trade him for value than see him walk away for nothing.

Hoglander + for Marcus Pettersson?

We wouldn't be adding nor would I want to trade Hoglander for a UFA.

Personally, I still want us to chase Matheson out of the Habs. Seems like an ideal fit, specifically if we pay for retention. That being said, it sounds like Montreal wants to add to their disaster of a defense core not subtract. Makes sense given Hutson is basically being left out to dry on a nightly basis.

I'm probably the only guy in my beer league who wears a neck guard and, frankly, I don't see what the fuss is all about. Mine is soft and I barely notice it. Others have neck guards built in to shirts. Considering the down side risk of NOT wearing one, it's a no-brainer to me.
