Yeah, last year with our depth we essentially rolled a 1D pair and then a 2A and a 2B when everyone was healthy.

I pretty firmly believe they are going to try and get back to that too. Management and Tocchet have talked at length of the value of defensive depth.

The answer to both questions is, yes. Rangers want to pay Shesterkin and he's already rejected a massive contract. They can't really go any higher while also keeping Miller. Miller also has arbitration rights and is offer sheet eligible.

Plus his play has, apparently, fallen off this season. 1g1a and the only defenceman on the roster with a negative +/- (-5).
He’s getting PDOd hard this year.

But he’s also a bit of a tough case like Hronek where he’s gotten ok results with Trouba and awesome results with Fox, and it’s hard to say how much of that is him vs his partners. Could be a long-term mainstay in the top 4 but some risk you spend a bunch of assets and lock him up at a big price only to find out he’s more of a 3/4 than a 2/3 defender.

100%

I expect that there will be two more D added (1RD and 1LD) before the playoffs and that none of Brannstrom/Forbort/Juulsen/Desharnais will play in the playoffs if everyone is healthy.

Hoglander for Pettersson
Desharnais + Klimovich + picks+ for Murphy with retention

Hughes Hronek
Pettersson Murphy
Soucy Myers
Brannstrom Forbort

Is this realistic and even good enough? Is Pettersson a good enough puck mover?

pettersson and murphy is no better than soucy and myers imo

they're an improvement on brannstrom/forbert/desharnais/juulsen but still not good enough

That would require some 2011 Bruins level luck.

Despite his -5, he's one of his team's leaders in possession play. 6.6% above team avg at 5v5 corsi, and 7.9% above team avg 5v5 Fenwick.

Trouba absolutely tanks his play though.

Borgen Jokiharju would be decent rentals.

Oleksiak is another that comes to mind in the Zadorov mode as Ryker Evans has broken out.

JO has 1 more year left at 4.6 after this season. Depends if they would want to retain Borgen and then re allocate for a top6 this off season or they let Borgen go who is 4 yrs younger. I would retain the RD that's 4 yrs younger myself to help anchor that 3rd pair and run Dunn-Larsson Evans-Montour xxxxx-Borgen and find a scorer

Is Marcus Pettersson even that good?

I'm not sure at his price he's worth it. Doesn't seem like a medium to long term target. If they are flinging the 1st+ for a defenseman you gotta want that player re-signed. M. Pettersson will be 29 and looking for one of those classic retirement contracts. I hate the idea of giving a player like that a 6 yr deal.

Pens fans have been saying they don't think he'll go for a 1st+, but who knows at the deadline.

He's also, statistically, far and away the most impactful Penguin I think. He's definitely a top 4D, and a Rutherford Penguin. He's also 6'3, which is a plus knowing this management group.

So......how do you make this work if you're the Canucks?

Rangers fans have been dogging him since last year. I’m not sure if he’s good or not. Apparently he’s soft and prone to a lot of costly mistakes.

As Rowlet and others pointed out, he seems to be better away from Trouba.

Unfortunately there is nothing appealling to the Rags from the Nucks in a KM deal unless you include Willander.

And I don't suspect that would ever be on the table.

Honestly, there's a good chance the Rangers need to move cash. There's a decent chance they have to retain to move Trouba, and Shesterkin wants like infinity million dollars, so Miller could potentially be available for picks that the Rangers could flip to do whatever they want with.

I just don't see a match with Van.

They don't need (nor likely want) Hoglander given their current LW situation and Othmann in the minors.

Don't see them being that interested in Lekk either but he would be more likely than Hoglander.

They could use younger, cheaper dmen and would obviously be interested in Willander.

Nucks 1st will not be that high.

Other Nucks prospects are ok at best.

So really, the Nucks can only offer a quantity for quality offer.

I can see quite a few other teams being better suited to the needs of NY.

More than that, the biggest issue is salary.

NYR is a contender who won't retain salary (and won't have to for a player of Miller's calibre) and there's no way we can fit his full ticket right now without moving out another key piece.
