Trading Pettersson has to be on the table given his frame skating and contract

Obviously he's one of the most talented players in the league in skill and hockey smarts when he has confidence but at this point are you willing to just wait it out and hope that the next playoff will be totally different?

As he gets more banged up and ages will he improve or regress?

If your willing to wait you risk getting little in return on the asset vs this year where he could be sold as a slumping player who just needs a fresh start to get to elite levels

What about his development looks like he's getting stronger and more able to deal with the pressure and grind?

It's a good bet he will return to form and become a top scorer again at some point but what happens when that skinny frail body starts to break down. Physics are not on his side when it comes to surviving healthy in a contact sport.

Unlike Hughes who has come in year after year looking more polished and physically impressive and elusive what about Pettersson has improved?

It's a painful thought to think that he just might get worse as the game he's not built for continues to break him down. OEL was a top defenceman at one point. Got the contract got banged up and had some injuries lost the velocity on his shot and his skating took a step back and then what? At least Armstrong was smart enough to find a GM dumb enough to answer these same potential questions wrongly.

Without being on the inside it's hard to say for sure. The way Hughes Tocc and Miller have shown being around it for this long now doesn't bode well though does it?

Jeannot’s Hit on Boeser
  • #1 thing Friedman looks at, when there’s head contact, is to see if the receiving player moved their head at the last moment or made a sudden movement that prevents the offending player from altering their path
  • In this case responsibility is entirely on Jeannot
  • Sometimes when a player comes back in the game, the player won’t get a suspension; that didn’t happen here
Senators, Sabres, & Red Wings
  • All in the same situation
  • These teams tease you with their potential
  • Sabres out there looking to see what’s available and now there are rumours out there about Byram
  • A few teams asked about Dylan Cozens
  • Kevyn Adams is not interested in trading either right now
Nashville Predators
  • Trotz “radioed” himself; didn’t mean the way it was interpreted
  • Hopes Trotz doesn’t stop doing weekly radio/podcast interviews; doesn’t know if there’s another GM that does this weekly
  • Lots of guys have term and trade protection
  • Nashville is a “no tax” state
  • Teams don’t “blow it up” two months after making big acquisitions
  • Can trade Fabbro, Novak, and Nyquist but a lot of the big pieces you can’t trade or they won’t accept a move
  • Trotz meant that they have some young players in the AHL and maybethey give those players a chance sooner than he thought
  • Can’t get the 2nd line centre situation sorted out
  • Skjei and Josi are having trouble playing together
  • Too perimeter
  • Even if there are trades, won’t be a true rebuild
  • Trotz is frustrated and trying to “light a fire under them”
  • Almost nothing Trotz say is meant to be understood in one sentence
  • When a team is struggling other GMs don’t “throw you a life preserver” but they “throw you an anvil”
  • Suspects that next game, someone notable could be a healthy scratch
  • Scratches are closer to the bottom of the roster and if you really want to send a message, need to have someone who expects to play sit
Pittsburgh Penguins
  • Sullivan was asked if all his players played hard after the last game and said there were a few guys “I thought a lot of the group play extremely hard”
  • Media and fans are going to be guessing who he’s talking about
  • The players he’s referring to, know exactly who they are
  • Suspects Sullivan is talking about Erik Karlsson

I don't know if both being lefties is part of the problem, but it probably doesn't help, and in a year there were so many decent RHD available....the decision to target a lefty to pair with your Norris candidate Lefty seems questionable at best. holy run on sentence.

Last Night’s Game
  • Swept California for the first time ever
  • Tocchet’s next contract will be the most important one they get done
  • Tocchet never lets the team get complacent
  • Can’t wait to see what the term will be on Tocchet’s contract
  • Have been told that DPoS continues to review the hit on Boeser
  • Does not believe Jeannot will get an in-person hearing; 2-4 game range
Demko
  • Has been a really good week for him
  • Good progress being made in the last 2-½ weeks
  • In the last stage before can return to full practice
  • 1-2 things still need to be cleared before he can participate in a full practice
  • Getting close to ramping it up
  • Not been a straight-line rehab; lots of unpredictability
  • Have never heard a timeline from the Canucks; all the timelines are from reporters
  • Briefly joined teammates for practice this week
  • Taking more and harder shots
  • When he takes part in a full practice with pace, that will be the big milestone
  • Report out of Toronto media that the Canucks are forcing Demko to play through injury could not be further from the truth
  • Not being rushed back; team is being very patient
  • Lankinen is bridging the gap
  • Still no timeline

Lekkerimaki
  • Two players in Abbotsford the Canucks felt were close to getting called up; Raty and Lekkerimaki
  • Talking to a pro-scout that watched him on the recent road trip; scoutsaid that Lekkerimaki’s “hockey sense is off the charts. He is an NHL thinker”; can tell he’s played pro-hockey before
  • When he was drafted by the Canucks, the Vancouver Giants wanted him
  • Another person told Dhaliwal that Lekkerimaki “is a very serious guy”
  • His focus is entirely on making the NHL; not one of those guys that plays video games
  • Tocchet won’t like his -8
Goaltending
  • Tolopilo and Silovs are struggling
  • Ian Clark is now a scout and isn’t based out of Vancouver
Sherwood
  • Predators signed McCarron & Jankowski to less than 1m contracts last season and wanted Sherwood to take similar money
  • Predators couldn’t match Sherwood’s asking price; he didn’t want to leave Nashville
  • Had 6-7 teams that wanted to signed him; his playoff performance got him noticed around the league
  • His agent knew Tocchet would love Sherwood
  • Same agent as Heinen, Hoglander, Mynio, Hirose, and McWard
  • Came down to 3 teams and Canucks were on the short list; money was similar and came down to best fit
  • Sherwood picked the Canucks
  • Was really worried about walking into the dressing room with all the chirping he did during the playoffs
  • Right after he signed, he got a text from Miller welcoming him to the team
  • Believes Allvin asked the veterans before pursuing him

Joshua
  • No set back
  • Team has a plan; part of that is scheduled days off
  • May play tomorrow against the Oilers
  • Wasn’t active for 3 weeks after surgery
  • Not rushing him or Demko
Tocchet Contract
  • Believes this is the last year of the contract (Allvin has said they have a club option for next season)
  • Both sides will talk when they are ready
  • Won’t be in the mid-range of coaching salary anymore
  • Doesn’t know the specific of whether they are talking extension

This is hilarious. They absolutely could've matched Sherwood's asking price....they simply chose to play hard ball over a few hundred K. He left and they incinerated more than $13mm in annual cap hit on petunias. Comic gold.

Colton Sissons is the guy on the Predators I'd be interested in. Local kid, right-handed centre, excellent at face-offs, signed for next season at 2.86m, no trade protection, physical, and a penalty killer. Has had an atrocious start to the season, is 31 years old, and just got hurt.

If Lankinen keeps his play strong at what point do you look at extending him as a 1B starter? With Demko looking like an injury prone star having a rock solid backup could be important insurance. It would let the team rest Demko as needed. Having two starting calibre goalies share the load worked pretty well for Boston. If the team could get him for somewhere in the range of 3 x 3m, or 2 x 4m, wouldn't it be a smart investment even if it costs you some depth up front?

9 points in his last 12 playoff games.

Don’t get me wrong - there’s a lot of players with his profile that end up going to a contender for peanuts, playing in the bottom six, and getting 2 or 3 goals on a run to a Cup Final. But IMO, counting on him to be a key piece in the top six would be setting one’s self up for a let down.

Good bye to Willander or Lekkerimaki then, only way you are getting a key piece then or a miracle.

Sherwood picked the Canucks

Great. Now we can pick him for a seven year extension cause he's not allowed to leave.

Seriously though, him and Lankinen have been absolute steals at their respective prices. DeBrusk is finally proving worth the investment too. The only real blunder seems to be Desharnais, and my only real complaint there is the second year.

I'd already have extension options available for him to sign.

Demko/Lank tandem is the way forward, and demko is the odd man out after his contract expires if he wants a raise.

A little too early imo but absolutely if Lankinen continues his play I would look at extending him.

Best case scenario he blossoms into an Ullmark caliber goalie at half the price. I could also see him electing to go to FA and perhaps cash in on a desperate team that might be willing to throw a ton of money at him. Lankinen is 29 and will want to be paid as much as possible. So far, he’s done an A++ job.

Quite possibly the best and most crucial UFA signing to date for this management. Without him, we would be under .500.

IMHO, this is the way of the future… big goalies playing the way they do today are going to be more prone to blowing out knees, hips and groins.
We seem to have lucked into the perfect 1B guy with Lankinen. A 60/40 split with Demko would be a good rotation going forward.

Personally, I think Lankinen has looked really good in large part because the Canucks are doing a great job of limiting high danger changes, and are playing pretty low event (unfortunately, quite boring) hockey. And in addition, Silov's has been absolutely horrid so Lankinen looks even better in comparison.

I wouldn't be looking at extending Lankinen unless its for very cheap.

Yeah, if we sign him too early and he can't sustain this level of play long term you are screwed. If you wait until he's firmly proven that he can deliver this kind of performance consistently then he is likely going to cash in on the market and get something in 5-6 million range from a team that is willing to take a gamble that he can carry the load for them.

Imo, he seems quite sound in his fundimentals but what do I know. I would be interested to hear mossey's take on Lankinen so far.

I obviously don’t agree with what he said. But I can recognize what he said was out of anger and not truly reflective of what he actually thinks.

I don’t think he owes an apology. He was literally harassed and still continues to be. He just needs to be better at controlling his emotions next time.

It’s a two way street. We bash commentators, analysts, hockey journalists, players whether it’s warranted or not. Overly sensitive fans sending personal attacks and calling him sensitive for having visceral reaction is just pure hypocrisy.

And to note, it was on a podcast where he’s allowed to freely speak his mind, not on national television.
To be honest, he seems exactly like a guy who would rage post the exact stuff he's complaining about. Could be wrong of course, but he's got that vibe.

This might be the case on this road trip but for basically all the games prior to that we looked awful defensively and were bleeding odd-man rushes and neutral zone space, and he's been the best player on the ice to steal multiple results so far this year.
