From "we ran out of time" to actually doing the leg work for the deadline in October & November, it feels good to have a management team that knows what it's doing again.

Don't think paying for Byram is the move. He's not defensively aware enough to be what the Canucks are looking for in LD2 given Hughes doesn't kill penalties (and nor should he given his current ice time).

Puck moving defenseman is what's going to be parroted because it's the obvious need, but I highly doubt the Canucks acquire a PMD who also isn't a solid penalty killer. I've said it before and I'll say it again, they should be looking for Dan Hamhuis 2.0. Will be expensive to acquire, but very much worth it.
I assume that if we were to acquire Byram, they'd have done their homework on the guy and are confident that he can be developed. He's still very young, just 23 years old. He's a guy that hasn't broken out yet and can hypothetically outplay a long term contract we'd sign him to in the off-season.

It's not like Hronek cost an arm and a leg, so there's no reason to assume Byram would involve Pete or something ridiculous. If the price is right, no reason to say no imo. People gagging over Theodore earlier in the season but saying no to Byram makes no sense.

Willander is Hamhuis 2.0. So if a trade is something like 1st, Hog, Raty, I'd be okay with that.

You guys are off base on Byram. 23 heading into his prime and was outstanding on the Avs cup run which showed what he's capable of.

Some concerns over head injuries and it did set him back but he's had unsettled roles and partners since so i wouldn't read too much into small data sets.

I would be all over getting him for less than peak value if possible. Cozens the same although i have zero idea how we would pull those 2 together without Pettersson going the other way and that's exactly what that team needs not picks and secondary pieces.

Still should be calling for Jokiharju Samuelsson and Kulich if they get antzy and want to try and fast track and sell. Not sure we have much that attractive to them.

He had a PDO of 103.7 during that run, and he's only had one good season relative to his teammates at ES.

If Rick Dhaliwal's sources are accurate and the Canucks were serious about dealing Miller to the Av's, with Byram being the centerpiece coming back.....than thank Gawd it never happened!

Firstly, can you imagine Miller on the same team with McKinnon, Makar and Rantenen? Yikes!

Trading Horvat instead to the Isles, and getting back Hronek and Raty was by far a better deal.

Yea to me it seems like Buffalo is more likely to make a panic move and trade a bunch of youth for an established veteran rather than move those players for what the Canucks can offer in picks/prospects. Buffalo doesn’t need anymore of those.

A team selling could really take advantage of Buffalo I think.

Friedman Interview:
Luke Gazdic:
-defends Luke Gazdic; can't come on the show without defending him
-if you take Gazdic off the air then the lowest of the low on social media have won
-Gazdic made a big mistake and it won't happen again
-things that were said to Gazdic were so offside and over the line that you would be rewarding the biggest losers on the planet
-has no problem with Donnie's opinion but wants to stand up for his teammate

Bowen Byram:
-doesn't know if he's available right now
-if the Sabres really plummet then everything can change
-Sabres don't want to subtract from their team; talking about making their team better
-Sabres want to compete this year

Canucks on the Trade Market:
-Canucks have one of the most active front offices in the league
-Allvin is cut from the same cloth as Rutherford
-looking for defencemen
-trying to determine what is out there and what is available
-everyone knew Utah was looking for defencemen and the best fit they found was Maatta; the Islanders are looking for defencemen right now due to injuries and haven't done anything yet; everyone knew Liljegren and Benning were available and ended up getting traded for each other because no one wanted to take on term
-it is a tight market
-we will get to a point where the market opens up a bit
-Canucks "are tossing their lines in the water" to see what's out there
-definitely looking for defencemen
-doesn't think Lekkerimaki is too far away
-wouldn't be surprised if management is looking to see what they have in Raty and Lekkerimaki
-best way to solve problems is internally

Demko:
-Canucks don't want to play the update game with him; just let the injury play out
-always a moving timeline
-not about a time frame but clearing hurdles and passing tests
-possible that the next hurdle can come this week
-pushed too hard to get ready for the start of the playoffs last season
-earliest he believed they would see Demko in an NHL game was mid-November

McDavid:
-will push his recovery as fast as he can
-if McDavid feels he's okay to go, he will play against the Canucks on Saturday
-if there's video of him taking serious practice this week, he'll probably play

Popular Teams for Players:
-Montreal is not a destination right now
-some places in the league are always destinations; names New York and LA
-some teams become destinations when they are good; Tampa Bay, Florida, and Dallas
-Vancouver now has a good team and is starting to become a destination
-Montreal has high taxes and the team isn't very good so not a destination; when they turn it around that will change

Predators:
-surprised at their start
-big hole at centre on the second line; has played a huge factor in all this
-takes a while to get new players to fit

Can anyone tell me what the "mistake" that Elliotte is referring to Gazdic having made is? I'm assuming it's something that goes beyond the general purview of him being a tool but don't know what it was.

I remember he lost it on a bunch of Canucks’ fans on Twitter or something back during the playoffs but not sure it he’s done something else recently.

The people that I know who know him personally have two big question marks about the young man: 1) He doesn't love hockey. Serious talent but a lack of passion and commitment and they dont know if that will ever change 2) He is apparently dumb as a post- like light bulbs not there dumb.

Not saying this means much, but as talented as he is, I would have my doubts from what I have been told

Byram?
I've watched him since he was a 15yr old and i've never heard negative things about him. He's certainly got hockey IQ and a tremendous work ethic. I think some people were taken back when he publicly questioned his career in hockey after so many concussions but geeez so young and so many had to be tough to come to grips with. Has had success at all levels and taken leadership roles with hockey Canada......idk tell me more because it sounds like BS he's a well spoken young guy and his agent has nothing but glowing things to say about him.

The scouting agencies questioned his size and physicality in his draft year and all he did was go out and blow players up and play HARD. I think he's a gamer

No more to tell. He is an extremely talented guy, no doubt!! And yes, he publicly questioned his career after the concussion, but he had been questioning if being a hockey player was his thing privately before that. This is the biggest issue for me with him for sure. And the people who I know that grew up with him, by all accounts, think he was a nice enough kid. Just like any kid, he had his growing pains and made his stupid mistakes. Not trying to say anything nasty about the young man, and I am sure he has grown up, but he is just known by his mates as not exactly a shining light on the intellectual side, off the ice. I was also surprised by this, because he is such a talent. My point was just that the combo of those two things (plus the TBI part) makes him a questionable one for spending real assets on him. But to each their own. Not trying in any way to sound like a know-all or to start a thing against him. The guy has som serious upside talent- no doubt about that!

Missed 37 games as a Rookie from injury and to play u20s with Canada
Missed 52 games before coming back and playing outstanding on way to top4 play on Cup winner
Missed another 40 games and had some struggles as expected after missing so much game action and recovering from serious injuries
40pt pace in spite of all the set backs and non feature PP usage

People want Hamhuis. Byram is Hamhuis just needs time to stay healthy settle into his manhood and prime.

Could pull out similar #s with lots of good young defenders. If you watch him play you know if he can stay healthy he will be a stud.

Problem is he’s missed a ton of developmental time at critical points in his career which has hurt his potential. He looked like a special player coming out of junior but has had poor underlying numbers his whole career and last season saw his microstats (zone entries/exits and chance creation) crater even before the trade to Buffalo.

Fine with him as a buy low candidate but the problem is you need him to improve his game substantially to be a worthwhile add, but you’re going to pay to acquire him and the fact he puts up points means you’re also going to pay him to keep him around while you wait to see whether he can regain his form.

The team would be taking on a lot of risk for the potential upside.

Fair response. I like his potential as he enters his prime. Has to stay healthy though and as you say its not like we would get him for peanuts either.

He was getting inundated with troll tweets, pretty aggressive and nasty ones too, apparently, and mouthed off against the entire city of Vancouver during intermission on HNiC.

While it was dumb, he's still new to broadcasting and let his emotions get the better of him. Hard to blame him when you're getting death threats. I agree with Friedman that taking him off air over it would essentially tell the trolls "keep doing this to whoever you don't like."

Just my two cents, but I don’t think anyone much cared that he blasted the trolls online. But in the same breath, he took a bunch of shots at the Canucks organization and players - people that CBC counts on having good relationships with and access to. I suspect behind the scenes he was likely coached not to bite the proverbial hand that feeds, no matter how empathetic his employer and colleagues were to what he was dealing with with the trolls.

For that matter, I believe Bieksa likely got a similar chat for his remarks about the media in Edmonton (even though he was bang on).

Bruins shopping Trent Frederic according to Weekes.

6’3 220lbs PWF. I feel like he would be great beside Miller and Boeser. Though we definitely got more pressing needs.

Management has done well at adding guys like Joshua and now Sherwood. What they haven't done so well at is adding a winger for Petey haha

They made a sizable investment in the off season and added Jake Debrusk, a consistent 25-30 goal scorer. All the interviews in spring training also confirmed they were going to plant the two together and hope sparks would fly. Even Alvin in an interview suggested this was a winger to play with Pettersson. But instead we get 70% no skating Pettersson who handles the puck like a grenade. The 'no linemates' for Petey thing has got to die at this point. There are PLENTY of good wingers on this team for a 12M dollar forward to find some chemistry. He's been playing with Garland who has been absolutely phenomenal this year and we're still pretending this guy doesn't have a partner. More excuses for Pettersson.
