And Soucy is much much better then Deharnais, even if his play hasn't been up to snuff so far this season.

People have extremely short memories and forget how fantastic Soucy was last season. A total stabilizing force. Whatever mojo he had last season isn't there this year, although there's been some recent games where he's looked close. I really can't seem them trading him away for an upgrade. Moving on from Soucy would necessitate finding another replacement. Ideally you're totally overhauling the third pair so you're running two 2nd pairs like last season.

Soucy was so good last year that he completely changed how the d corps played, which makes his drop off this year even more baffling.
I've no idea wtf is going on with him, but I have noticed that he's been roaming A LOT more than last year and that's probably contributing to his poor play.
He needs to keep his game simple, instead of trying to be Hughes 2.0.
I'd not be surprised if the number of times he's been caught out of position this year which then led to a goal or great scoring chance against has already eclipsed those same metrics from last year.
I think a big part of this is on the coaching staff and the new system they are trying out.
and you know that hes playing bad this season right.? could he be injured? who knows. it isnt the same soucy from last year.
Could be a lot of terrible contracts handed out July 1st, though it certainly helps the Canucks afford Boeser's next contract.

Elliotte Friedman reporting on the broadcast tonight that next year's salary cap could actually be pushed well over the 5% growth limit up to as much as $95 to $97 million. Right now per the CBA, it's set to go to $92.4 million, but with revenues so high, it makes sense to bump it higher.

He was mostly solid in the regular season but was getting caved in the playoffs while playing a lot of 3rd-pair minutes.
I think he can be effective on a 2nd pair but he needs to be paired with someone more like Hronek.

He was great before his injury but when he came back he was pretty pedestrian, and he's been horrid this year.
It could be that he's just inconsistent. I believe that was the knock on him from his time in Seattle.
Don't foresee Soucy being traded, even if we add a top-4 LD. He'll be pushed down to the 3rd line even if that means Brannstrom comes out (you just know this coaching staff would love to do that lol).
I imagine the hope/plan is for Soucy to play out his contract and by then D Petey will be ready to take over his role on the 3rd pair.
Hope we can upgrade sooner than later. It's clear icing 3 of Soucy/Myers/Forbort/Desharnais/Juulsen in every game is just not a recipe for success.

I haven't seen the final CORSI numbers from tonight's game......but from the 'eye test' Myers and Soucy were absolutely caved in, in their own zone.
I noticed that Tocchet broke them up briefly and they had Hughes out with Myers. But we all know how that pairing has fared in the past.
You worry that at 34, Myers' play be falling off a cliff. Every player on the wrong side of 30 is different. Some, like a Chris Tanev, can go on like old man river. While others see their games just implode.
One thing is for sure. They need a lot more out of Myers and hopefully he has more to give.

2025-26 Salary Cap
- Cap is supposed to be at 92.5m for next season
- Guardrails put on due to COVID in-case the league didn’t recover
- Revenues have been strong; outpaced the guardrails
- Two pathways: 1) keep salary cap at 92.5m and then have a huge jump the season afterwards or 2) the cap goes up next season to 95-97m
- Hearing the increase will be discussed and there’s some optimism that the two sides can come to an agreement

Agree on Marcus Pettersson, he’s top 4 on a really bad Pittsburgh team. Is he much better than Carson Soucy of last season?
Disagree on adding Willander and DPetey this season. The former I can see going pro after the college season, the latter maybe a cup of coffee for injuries at most otherwise expect he finishes the year and part of next year for seasoning.
DPetey has the potential to be a useful player for us, maybe like a Zadorov without the goal scoring. If he’s not ready there’s no point in rushing him.
Agreed that under normal circumstances, you'd never rush young d-men in the lineup. But Myers, Desharnais and even Soucy have been so bad so far this year, that anything is possible.

Soucy is a really nice player on the 3rd pair but his greatest limitation is the ability to think the game at speed.
He gets himself caught in the moment and gets out of position in the Ozone. He does not have the confidence or ability to QB a play out of the dzone.
His upside is that he's a great transition defender with speed and length. In zone D he can be a bit light on the puck or behind on a read but generally is pretty solid.
Some of his downsides... He is often a timid player with the puck - he defers even to Myers. He relies on others to transition the puck - he can join the rush but not start it. He is poor on his backhand. While he skates with good speed to make up for it, he does not pivot right well.
The big change in Soucy's performance is that the Canucks are asking their forwards to spring on the breakout more rather than come back to support the chip out.
Myers and Soucy were helped a ton last year by the system. There are growing pains now and perhaps a disconnect for Tochett/management in accepting that you can't have your cake and eat it too asking hulking Dzone players to transition quickly without mistakes.
We are trying to bring a more modern transition element to the team without the more modern blueline. We can either go back to the old system or bring in new players to execute.
It seems we are sticking with the new system and hoping to get through until help arrives in Willander/Pettersson or in trade. That's probably the right choice but Soucy/Myers are being asked to do too much as a 2nd pair.

Pettersson last year was levels above Soucy last year or at any point of his career. He player 23 mins a game, put up 30 points all at even strength. He also, covered for Karlsson all year to the point he looked like a NHL defensemen on defence. Maybe he doesn’t fit what the Canucks need on defence but he would easily be the #3 defender on this team. He is leading the Penguins in ice time both even strength and shorthanded. He is the number one defensemen in terms of usage on the Penguins.

We need a (couple) Kovacevic/Jiricek/Schneider type dman addition(s) to grow & contribute with this team this year, but more importantly the next two with cuck oel cap penalty.
The cap going up extra next year will help, and maybe willander or ep2 earning a spot will help, but the Canucks cap sheet is pretty efficient already, going to be tough to fit any medium plus sized contracts in the next few years.

If d-petey shows well this season in the NHL and willander signs in the spring and looks good, we could be a in spot with those 2 on the 3rd pair and some serious extra cash to improve the 2nd pair
If Pettersson can look like an NHLer this season, even in limited fashion, then that could go a long way towards roster construction next season. Means you aren’t playing a bunch of totally green rookies next season. Similar to Lekkerimaki this year.

yeah let willander stay in college and finish the year off and come to training camp next season to compete for a spot. dont need him this year.
