As mentioned above, I don't agree with this if Pettersson is traded. There is probably a route to reconcile the Miller situation in that scenario. He has effectively won the stand-off between the two players. I would not be surprised if shortly after a Pettersson trade, word comes out Miller never really wanted to leave Vancouver. At the very least, this could potentially boost Miller's trade value.

i'm trying to be open minded about what management is doing but i really don't see how trading pettersson and miller (or even just pettersson but i'm skeptical there's any path to getting miller happy again) gets this team anywhere. even something like necas, kk and morrow for pettersson leaves this team awful at center, weak on the wing and still with probably the worst defense in the league

the way i see it there's no path to a winning team in the near term unless pettersson turns it around so you may as well gamble on that happening. trading pettersson pretty much guarantees a mediocre team for the forseeable future

If I'm the Canucks I would be calling the Hawks GM daily to see if we can make any trades with them.

A dman who caught my eye while watching Hawks play:

Nolan Allan, LHD, 6'2. rookie dman who once represented canada at WJC. Decent first pass and looks very aware defensively. Considering how many young defensemen are on Chicago, can slip through the cracks.

I know it's a unpopular theory but moving say
Pettersson Hronek Hoglander for the Islanders to shake up their retool and bring back Barzal Dobson Pelech could be the type of deal to get us right back to being a thorn in the West if Miller's issues are mostly localized to Pettersson.

The team has shown it can compete without EP.

EP for a star winger would be a dream scenario. After that, it's not that hard to get a solid 2C and 2nd pairing Dman. Team would look completely refreshed.

You simply cannot compete in this conference, full of star centers, with EP as your go to guy.

There are a ton of players older than JT that are still going strong. 31 is not old, and especially not for a guy with no major injuries, and few playoff runs.

Uh our record without miller looks better than our record with Miller this year. So what are you talking about?

If the Miller LOA was JT being sent for an anger management timeout (something i suggested at the time and was labeled a "speculator") he's done with this team.

IMO, the Pettersson contract changed the internal dynamics of this team which they will not recover from, and it's probably why some operate with an internal salary structure.

Interesting factor. Gives them the offer sheet option, but their current front office has really shown no ability to do anything creative or leverage cap-strapped teams.
I get that people wanted them to hold the trade up for a ransom, but at the end of the day, they got out of the Hall deal and shed 1.8m in salary and got paid a 3rd rounder.

I don't think that's terrible work, and I would not be shocked to hear that Hall wasn't living up to his "veteran presence" role either, becaus he never has been that guy.

if you think you can keep Miller, you are an idiot. He's ready to go. Maybe Pettersson is definitely gone too. But Miller is definitely gone no matter what.

Trading him at the deadline or the summer is not "keeping him".

Which is why being near on trading Pettersson (again) makes this management team look terrible.

They're grasping at anything that turns around the room while potentially levelling their chance to compete long-term.

Back when Boeser and Garland were on the block, it seemed like no one wanted them. Then the team has a massive turn around with them as key players. Management likes Boeser again. Garland has become teacher's pet. etc... Is it just this management team being saved from itself?

Tocchet comes here and implements a system where he's lost everyone now but Quinn. (Including JT who is having his worst season in 3 years) That means Hughes' is the only building block? That logic is spurious at best.

This management team might be a problem.

You were right about Pettersson being offered up for trade. It's something I thought they would not do after he expressed commitment to the team. Turns out, it very nearly did happen.

By internal dynamics do you mean Miller?

If they trade Miller and Pettersson, I wonder what they say to Hughes? This team is falling apart fast.
This has been ongoing for years, I'd expect Hughes did his part to smooth things over with both players and has been kept in the loop to a degree, nothing probably needs to be said further at this point.

Just have to hope he's okay with the returns and outcome, he's the franchise.
