That’s a good trade for both. Maata isn’t good but neither is Detroit and Utah needs to do something. They can easily afford to trade a 3rd.

Will be interesting to see if this means the market is more open and prices aren’t going to be too crazy.

Don't think that Maatta trade bodes well for us but Utah had absolutely no leverage.
I guess when you lose a game to the Sharks with three late third period goals against, desperate times call or desperate measures in Utah's case.

It seems everyone in the league is desperate for defensemen. Guys are going down like nine-pins, and most clubs just don't have any depth in the minors.

Based on those YouTube highlights of Wilander's play at BU, I'd almost be willing to consider signing him to his ELC in March and plugging him into the lineup. Is he ready? Probably not.

But this Canuck blueline is really a shambles right now. And their only other option is blowing a big chunk of their future in acquiring a guy like Zadorov at the TDL.

And speaking of Zadorov, watched two periods of the Boston-Philly game tonight. The Canucks dodged a huge bullet by not re-signing him, based on what I witnessed tonight.

I don’t know about the 50% retention, but this is who I expect us to get. My guess is Hoglander our first and a B level prospect (Raty is my guess)
or kilmovich..

Frank Seravalli reporting that the Canucks are already beating the bushes for blueline help. They're trying to figure out the market for some of the impending UFA d-men who might be on the move before the TDL.

The problem of course is that once you get past Hughes and Hronek, their stable of d-men is comprised mostly of 5-6-7 guys.

They're trying to use Soucy and Myers as a 3-4 pairing, but it's been a borderline disaster so far. And it won't get any better.

Unfortunately the price at a minimum is likely to be their first rounder; and another prospect who can play immediately. But it's the price you have little choice but to pay, when draft after draft you fail to find NHL d-men.
could they trade soucy instead? and find another cheaper LHD ?

Soucy has fallen off a cliff compared to last year, that's the main problem. Myers is still Myers. The other problem is they don't have a bottom pairing like last year (originally anchored by Cole) that can take the pressure off them, maybe Brannstrom plays into that but we'll see, and he'll need a better partner to do it.

I don't even mind Forbort, but not sure how he fits unless Brannstrom plays the offside, which Tocchet hates. Desharnais has been pretty much a bust thus far ... I thought he actually had some good moments in the playoffs against us and could see the thought process ... but he's not working out.

I think Soucy would do better with less minutes. I think he can be a top 4 defender...in like half the games he plays. I always thought he would be the guy you would like to move up into the 2 pair in the case of injury in a critical situation and flip that coin.

Myers is suspect to me, like he'll be fine for stretches and have a pure chaos shift or two out of nowhere. He's under review for me. Forbort I hate 5v5. Brannstrom I need to see some more of, he's quite panicky but he'll pull out of it as well.

Why would they trade Soucy? He is earning his money. Bit of a rough start but he's a decent player. The team has one regulation loss and the fans want to punt just about every guy. Hilarious at 8 games in.

We could have drafted Shea Theodore too. What is the relevance.

Hronek had the same two year left as Anderson does but had an extra year of control because he was an rfa. Chychrun had three years left. And the Lindholm trade was basically a sign and trade.
i dont know about the situation for shea theodore, but we traded that pick away.

My concern with Andersson is he will want a mammoth of a contract right when we're still dealing with OEL's buyout. So it very likely costs us Garland unless she re-signs for hella cheap. Not exactly a deep forward group losing both him and Hoglander in the span of two years.

It also creates a logjam on the right side for Willander who would be basically stuck on the third pairing. And that assumes Myers is getting scratched on the regular.

Now if Andersson plays left then it's a moot point. Otherwise, Pettersson and Matheson seem like much better targets.

Doubt they’d get Andersson without Wallinder going the other way.

Canucks Trade Chatter:
-no secret that the Canucks are on the prowl
-they are always looking
-want to find a way to move the puck better; believe that is a key inefficiency

Rasmus Andersson:
-not going anywhere
-Flames have no intention of making a move
-Flames believe they have players who want to be in Calgary

Timothy Liljegren:
-will wait until they get the best deal they can get
-holding on to him as injury insurance
-roster considerations to make when or if Hakanpaa returns to the line-up
-not struggling to move him; a few teams have shown interest

Oilers:
-lack of urgency is the most telling sign that something is off
-not same urgency and panic as last year
-concern over the way they reacted on Monday

Penguins:
-have nothing in their pipeline
-second slowest team in the league; just above the Islanders
-doesn't see a path forward for this team to turn it around

Bruins:
-temperature was pretty high going into the weekend, got a win, then that cooled
-there's top-4 is very formidable
-scoring problems
-top-3 lines have scored a total of 4 even strength goals
-Marchand had a very difficult summer; three separate surgeries and a week of training camp with an illness

Islanders:
-definition if "mid"
-a couple of really good pieces but nothing super elite with exception to maybe Sorokin and Barzal
-have been living off on Conference Finals runs
-not scaring anyone

Hurricanes
-believes they will try and bring Alexander Nikishin over later this season
-signed Bryce Montgomery on the eve of the regular season who had 1m in performance bonuses; have made it a habit of not including performance bonuses; they structured his ELC this way and included him on the opening night roster so they could have 1m in performance bonus cushion; can now use later in the season to sign Nikishin and give him a performance bonus that is easily attainable; on their reserve list and can sign him at any time even in the playoffs

Dominos will fall once LA tumbles down the standings and Dubas pull his head out of his ass in Pittsburgh. Gavrikov and Marcus Pettersson are only realistic options.

Wonder if they've figured out Lindholm is a third-liner at this point who can play up line-up in a pinch, but is best served in basically a checking role.

Mario Ferraro to me is by far the most realistic option.

Solid mid-pairing LD that has tons of experience playing high-leverage and is doing really well for SJ right now, and is on a bargain contract.
