I love how open Allvin is in that interview, even if much of it is "strategic" transparency. Random thoughts after reading:
i think they are carefully working ep40 and miller in the media (and presumably behind the scenes) trying to get them to the next level. hughes is there.

with ep40 i feel like they pressured him to take the bag and now they are pressuring him to live up to the bag. not sure it is a good idea.

Which puck mover (who was available) should he have brought in? I don't disagree that the defense as constructed - particularly with one and now both of our top pair on IR - is significantly flawed, but bringing in the right guys isn't always possible. here is a list of UFA defenders signed last summer:

The only guy on that list i would have aggressively pursued at the $$/term he got is Matt Roy and there was almost no chance he would have been interested in signing in Canada.

Edmundson may have been worth the risk, but he's always struggled to stay healthy and I'm not sure he's a material upgrade over Soucy (at least the version of Soucy we saw last year)

There just wasn't a lot out there that made sense for us.

Voice to text screwed up… it was supposed to say Tocchet… and refer to Branstrom.

I think both management and coaches need to wear this.

The team fired on all cylinders for long durations last year. We were an absolute wagon for the first half of the year.

Management thought they were blessed with a contender. Ended up becoming a total pretender this year.

Why do you assume they neglected the defense, rather than there wasn't anything available that made sense? Go back and look at the defenders who changed teams as UFAs that summer and let me know which of them we should have brought in. Niko Mikkola would have been a great add....of course I'm making that call with the benefit of 20/20 hindsight vision.

Chris Tanev

While I don't love the contract Toronto dulled out for him, I'd rather deal with him falling off in 4-5 years than sign any one of Myers, Desharnais or Forbort. We even know he wanted to come back because he pushed to be involved in the Lindholm deal.

Even keeping Zadorov would have been better. We know Allvin/Rutherford played hardball with him; first rejecting 4.6/5yrs because they insisted on four after the trade. Then 5/5 when he wanted six years.

It boggles the mind they were so adamant about playing the firm hand with him but sure, let's bring in a project that Edmonton didn't deem good enough to play in the cup final.

You can’t play a transition game when 2/3 of your defense can’t transition the puck.

And you sure as hell can’t do it when your two only PMD are injured.

So you either bring in more PMDs or change the system.

I don’t see Tocch changing the system.

Even if they played low event defensive first hockey, the dmen STILL have to be able to pass the puck every once in awhile. They can’t do it.

So this is a mess made by mgmt and the coaching staff not entirely on the same page to a degree.

But mgmt needs to fix it because the current d core is just not good enough. Full stop.
It’s not that much of a mess considering they are all on pretty short term contracts and they are probably going to add a guy if not 2 by TDL.

Tanev (never hit free agency) would have been a great fit, but 6 years at $4.5MM for a 35 year old is nuts and i wouldn't have offered that. He's already lost at least a step speed wise over the last few years, the idea that his game is going to hold together for another 4 or 5 is too much hopeium for me. I wonder if they had a chance to do things over again if they'd have acquired Tanev instead of Lindholm and been able to extend him to something semi reasonable.

I liked Zadorov and would have been happy to see him stay and they tried. Sounds like despite his interest in staying, he'd been contemplating life as a Bruin for a while. Not sure he'd be a big help in the puck moving department in any event.

New York Rangers
  • Firing Laviolette may be inevitable
  • Has been hearing, since the holiday freeze lifted, that the Rangers continue to explore different types of moves on the trade market
  • K’Andre Miller is out there and has generated interest
  • Chris Kreider and Reilly Smith are on the market
  • Two people close to the organization believe Mika Zibanejad would waive his NMC for the right environment
  • Rangers haven’t asked Zibanejad to waive his NMC
Vancouver Canucks
  • Canucks are not afraid to make moves early
  • Doesn’t know if the Canucks will go “big game hunting” like last season
  • There is some speculation around Elias Pettersson’s future but wouldn’t be surprised to hear more noise about that in the summer
  • Thinks Allvin’s interview was about lighting a fire under his players & letting everyone know they are interested in making some changes
  • Looking for a top-4 defenceman
  • Would not be shocked if they add a scoring forward
  • Canucks are looking and Allvin has admitted they are engaged in trade conversations
  • History suggests moves sooner rather than later
  • Neither Canucks nor Brock Boeser wanted to get overly serious about an extension until later into the season; thinks talks will begin to pick up
  • Canucks have called out their guys and it’s now a matter of them stepping up
Montreal Canadiens
  • Primary objective is to both add and subtract
  • David Savard, Christian Dvorak, Joel Armia, and Jake Evans are on expiring contracts and are available
  • Canadiens want to re-sign Evans
  • Mike Matheson’s name is also on the trade market
  • May look to make a hockey trade
New York Islanders
  • Will wait a month and see where they are in the schedule before making moves
  • Teams have already reached out on players
  • Both Kyle Palmieri and Brock Nelson would get 1st round picks back
  • Thinks the Islanders will be aggressive in free agency
  • Islanders host next season’s All-Star game

If I'm moving a first, I'm aiming a whole lot higher than Palmieri or Nelson, but maybe I'm lower on them than most.

I guess I could see a contender doing it with a late one?

Roy was only signing in the States and Walker is a 3rd pairing defenseman who doesn't pk and makes almost 4 million.
Yeah, I hated the Myers Desharnais Forbort stuff but the only alternative was holding cap space - not the guys who signed for x or y number.

A another Soucy giveaway ices it for the Flames.

I'm holding out hope that by March we'll see a young pairing of Wilander and Elias Pettersson II. Will they struggle at times? Sure they will.

But it would offer so much more hope that some of these awful d-pairings the Canucks are icing right now.

Canucks enter the new year outside of a playoff spot, and their schedule only gets a lot tougher for the remainder of the season.

This team is f***ed. There's no other way to put it.
The big problem is they are playing poorly, and even though they got favourable results for the first couple of months of the year while being relatively healthy, they were playing poorly then too. And now, with significant injury issues, they are going to have to turn their play around which is a tall order.

Probably the best they can do is play .500 hockey and try to tread water until they get Hughes back.

Now is the time to trade picks, before a Hughes resurgence, while other teams may value those picks higher.

Team is committed to Hughes current contract. You buy the dip with everything you have as long as that's the case.

Ridiculous as it might sound, this losing streak could be an actual help to us. Our 1st suddenly has a lot more value if other teams think we'll bottom out. I wouldn't necessarily gamble it for a rental unless they were reasonably certain he'll resign but I'd absolutely pitch it out for someone under contract.

My hunch is Allvin has been working on Byram without having to give up Pettersson or Miller.

Yepp with Tocchets 1980s style he wants the team to play and the Gomer Pyle defense we have I'd say we are F...ked.
HAPPY NEW YEARS GUYS....
