The Rangers and Buffalo are both ripe for a deal, and Miller may even waive for NY, too bad they'd want to include Zibanejad as par of it. He looks awful.

The Canucks clearly have to do something meaningful soon.

Unfortunately after today's game, every GM in the league is looking at Vancouver thinking the exact same thing. We lose more and more leverage on a Dman trade every day.

I think this core is sort of washed. Beyond Hughes I think they should look at everyone else very carefully. These guys have been around for a long time and produced 1 2nd round visit. That’s it. Lots of terrible moves by Benning but still.

But, we don’t know how much the cap is going up and OEL buy out is going up to 4.7 million next year.

Personally my retool because god knows this team will never rebuild is as follows:

Lankinen for a 1st or great prospect. Desperate teams out there needing help and what asset management that would be. They aren’t paying him 5 million next year so why not sell extremely high.

Boeser somewhere he will resign for a young controllable defender. Obviously not getting a Faber but that’s the type of deal you want.

Suter for a 3rd and prospect. Maybe more?

Deharnais anywhere for anything you can get.

JT Miller and Hoglander for Alexis Lafrenierre and Schneider. Blockbuster but Miller looks like he wants a deal. Sulky out there.

You’ve moved 2 core guys. Hopefully have 2 x 1st rounders. Willander coming. Keep Hughes and EP.

That’s my plan. Who’s in?

I’ll be pretty shocked if there isn’t a shake up in short order.

Team is way too reliant on 1 player (Hughes).

Miller looks cranky and disinterested out there.

Bottom 4 d are AHL quality.

Hoglander and Deharnais situations.

Something has to give.
trade the core minus hughes. shake things up. boeser/miller. suter deharnais.

I mean how can it possibly we worse than the spectacle we witnessed this afternoon?

I mean, to be fair, we're missing three of our best players and two are still shaking off noticeable rust (Miller and Demko). Colorado was on a full tailspin at the start of the year despite Makar basically being superman. Imagine how they'd look without him.

An imagine top four defensemen alongside the return of Hughes and Hronek will do wonders.

I thought the Rangers might wait until the TDL before shipping bodies out......but by then the season probably won't be salvageable.

They lost another to Bolts, being bleached 6-2. Everybody looked bad from the goaltender on out. How you go from the President's Trophy one year to the discombobulated mess this season, is almost impossible to fathom.

The way some of these guys are playing right now, I'm not any of them could help other teams in the NHL, including the Canucks.

At this point, the only move that might motivate them to play better is firing Chris Drury. I genuinely think none of them give a shit because they just don't like him. Can't really blame them either. He's treated being a GM like he's playing a video game.

Publicly announcing you essentially want to dump two clear favourites in the dressing room for pennies on the dollar, one of whom put the Rangers on his back more than once, is a pretty fantastic way to kill any desire the team as a whole might have to play well.

He’s my preference over Byram. Should cost a little less, has had greater production, and is big. Lots of risk with him, though.

Would love KAM on our 3rd pair but don’t think he’s a top 4 dman solution.

Think if we send our 1st, it needs to be a #3 or better D.

I said it before this season and I will say it again. This isn't our year. This year we hope to make the playoffs and get to the second round to maintain momentum, but I don't think we're a cup threat barring something seriously shifting.

Our window is when Willander and Lekkerimaki are contributing to the team, the cap goes up, and we can add some higher skill/speed through free agency.

I love Boeser, but I'm not sure we should re-sign him if he wants an 8 year deal at 8+.

I would love to sign Ehlers to add some speed to our team. I also think he has more to give on a team that gives him more top pp time and more ice time in general.

I also wouldn't mind going big game hunting if we could swing it. Marner or Rantanen would be major gets. Obviously we would need to move some things around to do this.

But we're not that far off.

Willander seems like a highly, highly likely adept top 4 shut down guy. If we get lucky and he doesn't have a long adjustment period he would be contributing in that role as soon as next year or the year after. We then just need another puck moving LD.

Our centers and D (again, if Willander hits the ground running and we add a competent LD) is decent. But our wingers aren't great.
DeBrusk is a great start, Joshua, Garland, and Sherwood are good, useful, fast forecheckers. Boeser could sign a semi reasonable contract. But there's not a ton of speed there and it's not very dynamic.

I thought the same about this year.
Last year was an outlier, high shooting percentages, hardly any injuries and getting a top 4 dman for a 2nd rnd pick with a solid veteran 5/6 dman. The defence looked to be good for 4 years then came the summer.

Time is catching up to Miller, I am sure he is watching his career sift through his fingers.

The cap increasing, sure but for the Canucks the buyouts will cost the team two years of using those increases.

There is just not enough skilled depth on the team. Where is the next 1rst or 2nd line center? Will Lekkerimaki be physical enough for Tocchet's system can Willander be a to 4 defender at all?

IMO Boeser needs to be replaced there is no way I would want to watch the same core trotted out for another 6 years when the last 7 have been far less than winning.
Even now the team should be considering the next Demko and Hughes contracts, they will be at market value if they sign and that market will be set with the expectations of future increases so maybe blotted now. If the cap was to up 10 mil over the next two years that money would be eaten up just to keep the status quo.

Last year this core group plateaued, the best they will ever be.

IMO management has to make a hard decision, stick with the fan favorites until they are worthless or move them when their values may be at the highest and reduce the time.
Move Boeser and ? So there is still some stability for the new guys.

Allvin seems to be doing the same as Benning, building up the bottom six, fans loved Dorsett, fans love Sherwood, several bottom six guys signed by Elmer, several signed by Allvin, team capped out by Benning, Allvin capped out the team.

Rutherford talked the talk, handed the control to Allvin and the other 3 GM's and they didn't walk the talk.

Do fans and posters really need 6 years of this stuff before the failures repeat themselves enough and get hammered into their heads?

The core needs, the team needs more than 2 years of a prospect giving false hope? Waiting for 2 years for a rookie is okay?
Ask yourself a question, how many under 26 yr olds are making a difference on this team? ONE. How many are even on the team? How many on the farm are ready to make a difference and I don't count the defence because that is a very low bar right now.

Management needs to re-think their plan, if they are using one. It does appear to be the Benning "No Plan, Plan" just reacting with no foresight.

Instead of just doing rentals or bandaids they can make some trades for the future. If Tocchet can't teach other than dump and pray then replace him.

All these issues are repeats of the last cycle only hopefully this group of 5 management people, Rutherford and the 4 GMs will break this cycle. It's needed because the team can't improve and pay increases for the core, which isn't making an improvement just keeping the same. These management people are supposed to be the best of the best. It is becoming so obvious that winning is secondary to selling hope and tickets. Win enough in a Canadian market to keep selling hope and filling the arenas but not too much.

Certainly does seem like it's not our year but 24 is coming to an end.

8 of our top 10 paid players have had bad 2024s by their standards and most of that is due to health reasons. Mental and physical

Pettersson Miller Boeser Joshua Hronek Demko fall into that category while Soucy Myers have been overtaxed by the loss of not just Hronek but letting both Cole and Zadorov walking without a single adequate replacement

I think we are poised for a great 2025 but that does require some change of fortunes health and a much needed addition or 2 to our defense. We've got to be able to hang in until the 4 nations and then reset and get an impact D.

I'm not giving up hope yet but the D situation has gone about as bad as possible starting with management's off season plan

By the way really enjoyed the conversation on our media fans and the snob mentality that persists in hockey (especially in Canada)

@MarkusNaslund19 @credulous @Nick Lang @Mr. Canucklehead
Good job breaking that down. 👏

Absolute night and day between the NFL and most of what Vancouver has to offer. And like mentioned a lot of that is the fault of the organization restraining access.

well said.

the point on losing cole is very apt. he was a steady influence all season, until a bad stretch in the playoffs combined with zadorov's catching lightning in a bottle at the same time had everyone more than happy to turn on cole. the D probably looks a lot different even if we just keep him over myers. but i assume that decision was largely made because they would still need to find a 2nd pairing rhd which will be harder than finding a 2nd pairing lhd.

I don't understand why fans turned on Cole after the playoffs. Yes his play dropped drastically in round 2 against the Oilers, but what people don't understand is that Cole had a huge laceration just above his skate which affected his play big time. Cole probably shouldn't have been playing but the guy is a warrior. I bet the whole dressing room is missing Zadorov and Cole, veteran players who can calm a room when things start to get out of control. Such a lockeroom interactions and colossal gameday breakdowns such as the one we witnessed yesterday.

Goaltending is quickly becoming a central issue with Demko struggling to return to form, Silovs looking less like a future starter (though he's been better since being sent down), and Lankinen a pending UFA. Still need to give Demko some time, obviously, but decisions need to be made.
