The bridge was the first indication he didn't want to be here? I thought it was pretty clear it was because Benning mismanaged the cap. Same reason Hughes re-signed for 6 years instead of 8 years.

Every high end player wants to be the best and win. Did you want him to say that he likes losing?
No, winning matters. He wasn't a "professional" then, a player that punches in, does a job and then punches out. He wants to win, he wants to play in the playoffs.
But he has made that clear twice especially after the Freidman interview and then holding out re-signing. The pressure was to trade him 3000 miles away from anything familiar and to a team with a drill sergeant for a coach only to have Tocchet adopt that system.
He doesn't apparently have an ongoing live in partner.
He was probably pressured by some team mates, management, Tocchet.
He could have been made promises that got broken or haven't happened yet.
Maybe Tocchets change in system was a surprise and he just doesn't fit.

There is clearly an issue between those two. You're kidding yourself if you think otherwise. Completely different personality types and both vying to be the offensive leader of the team.

Unfortunately, it seemed like Horvat was the issue, but I've speculated for years now that it was a Horvat/Petey/Miller ego triangle and this core does not get along with one another. I have no idea where Hughes and Boeser fit in amongst all of this.

This has been a problem since Tanev and Markstrom left.

Does anyone have a link to those Boeser interviews? Unless he's miming a heart with his fingers, I feel like what he says is totally understandable and does not show him picking sides or anything like that.

I’m not even sure why Boeser is being brought up. The guy is like that one guy at work that just gets along with Everyone and everyone does too. If Boeser suddenly had to play with Desharnais and Forbort on a makeshift line he would probably sound thrilled about it lol

EP and Bo seemed pretty close too. I'm assuming management "choosing" JT over Bo probably didn't make feelings in the room any better.

boeser wants to get paid and needs to produce to do it. he probably just thinks his numbers will be better with miller. has nothing to do with preferring him as a person

Pro hockey players don't want to win? I'm having trouble following your logic. If anything, the 8 year deal suggests he wants to win here, even though he can't reasonably project the Canucks to be a winner throughout that term. It's a commitment to the environment, primarily, not performance.

He could have signed short term and then asked out. He could go to Carolina for a year, sign short term, and then control his path similar to what Necas is doing. Instead, he chose max term with no rumour from behind the scenes about wanting out (Dhaliwal).

I wonder if bringing in a "leader" like O'Reilly could help in the room. Only $4.5M but for 2 more seasons after this. Perhaps Trotz can retain 25-50% as well.

Good at faceoffs, defensively reliable, Stanley Cup captain 2nd line C. In my head, if we put JT on the wing, it could also unleash him offensively and physically.

Something happened right near the ASG and EP40’s extension that divided the room.

Maybe it was the distraction that the contract was causing but I feel like that was an event that affected the dynamic of the team and it hasn’t been the same since.

Or something happened at the ASG that we’re unaware of.

If we need a leader then: Schenn, Letang or Lowry like leadership would be ideal.

I wonder if there's truth to the rumors about Miller wanting out. I still don't think it's likely, but I'm a lot more willing to consider the possibility now.

If that is the case, I would bet it's not because of Pettersson specifically.

The 8 year deal was better for the Canucks. It makes trading him in 3 more years much easiers as 11.6 mil becomes like 5 mil is now compared to covid cap flat years.
Next year 5 mi will be a 3/4 dman when the cap goes up and in 3 years 5 mil will be 3rd line players. The more the cap goes up the less impact on the cap those big numbers are.

They rolled the dice on a 100 point player and so far it looks like that got a 85 point player, still decent but not at that cap hit.

But the good thing is there are many teams that will also roll the dice on his potential and I think he will blossom under a different coach or system.
But any trade IMO should be made before his NMC kicks in and before the end of the season. There are some teams still hanging on to a thread of a playoff spot back east.
It would be nice even to trade him for the #1 overall in 2026 with accessories added.

I don't agree there was ever a Horvat issue. Bo may have been caught between the two, but he always seemed to be a solid dressing-room guy. I could use him doing some post-game interviews right at this moment, actually.

I dgaf. Give me a team of Millers over a team of EPs.

I've had it with EP and his mopey, underperforming BS. Constantly trying to find this guy wingers....

Dude you're being paid like a premier player in the league. You're being paid to perform at a high level and take over games and you never do. f*** off already.

I wish we used his money to sign Zadorov and Lindholm.
So does Boston

One thing I strongly disagreed with Dhaliwal's interview today was the "if you don't want to be here, why sign the contracts?" thing

uh.. as an agent, i would absolutely tell my player to take a fair big money offer every time. you can sort out an exit quietly pretty soon after if need be.

there's 56 and 93 million reasons why they signed those deals lmao. what isn't guaranteed is what's out there come july 1, or if you are getting traded to a worse situation, or a career ending injury. signing those deals guarantees you money and the veto power on any deal.

Of course it's better for the team to go long-term. This means it was not better for Pettersson, right? Yet, he still wanted it...

As far as I can tell... Bruce is saying Petey had issues with who he was left to play with(lack of talent). I don't see how that is an issue between he and Miller. That's between the player and coaches.
Bruce also got some things wrong in that interview. I'm not sure how much he actually remembers. At one point he says this

"Like, when he [Petterson] was getting 100 points the year with me, he was playing the wing with Miller and Boeser, or he was playing the wing with [Bo] Horvat."

I don't remember Petterson spending any time playing with Horvat...
