That’s fair. I more meant he’s not a pure future asset like a draft pick or prospect. Hoglander won’t help turn the Sabres or Rangers season around but would at least be in the line-up the next night.

Actually, yes. Someone over on r/canucks looked up the data and showcased just how little Pettersson plays with Hughes relative to their respective skill levels.

I highly recommend reading both their posts but the gist is Pettersson still has a 50.81%xGF away from Hughes while everyone else is at 40.73%xGF overall. In other words, Miller, Boeser and DeBrusk rely far more on Hughes than Pettersson does.

Put simply, getting a legitimate puck moving defenseman would do a world of good not just for Pettersson but the team as a whole because we wouldn't have to rely on Hughes for damn near everything.

That's the fundamental problem right now, and teams recognize it. Which is why they try boxing out Hughes more than any other player. You shut him down and it shuts us down.

Who cares about 3rd round picks, I want to win the cup and you do that by taking big swings while you have the best defenseman in the league who is probably a top 5 player overall for 3 more years, two top 10~ 100pt Cs, and a top 5 goalie.

Sure, that's how competing works, but I'd rather go for it than watch Hughes leave as a UFA, and Miller age out.

Competing for what? As Burkie used to say, you'd have to be in some drug-induced fantasy to think this team is a Cup contender.

And guys like Miller, Demko and Boeser 'will' age out long before that happens anyway. You don't win a Cup with just star players. It's 'depth' that always spells the difference. And this team really doesn't have any.

You are way more likely to acquire a Hampus Lindholm or something with the 17th overall pick than you are to select a good player that actually lines up with this team's competitive window. I hate this idea that if there isn't an obvious move to bolster this team, we have to give up.

This franchise needed him to excel and be a perennial 100 pt player to offset the deficiencies elsewhere (ie. on the blueline).

In any other market like CBJ or Carolina, this is probably a non-story and he probably rides out his contract.

We will undoubtedly lose in any trade involving him. People raise a stink about his compete level but Cozens and Tage are legitimate sloths at times.

Cozens is in his 5th NHL season, is turning 24 soon, has had ONE season over 50 points and 20 goals (2 years ago, was 5th on his team in points with 68), and is on pace for his least productive season (34 points) since his rookie year. Oh yeah, he's also signed to a terrible contract until 2030.

I'll pass on him unless Buffalo is adding a ton of value to unload that contract in a Pettersson trade.

Yup, they can play 15 minutes a game without a competent puck mover, but trying to do it for 35 minutes is a recipe for disaster. Elite with Hughes out there, contender for 1st overall pick without him.

Cole & Zadorov were still below average puck movers (on average, Z could be great some games), but there's still a big drop off between them and Soucy/Myers, and another level for the bottom pairing guys.

The team will do 90% of things right, then undo all of it with one stupid icing/pass off the boards/etc. It's frustrating to watch because the mistake is obvious, while all the correct things they're doing get ignored afterwards because of that one mistake. Forwards are being chopped off at the knees with the current situation.

The bull case is the team is a sleeping giant that gets unlocked with one more puck moving guy and other moves around the edges. The bear case is something is off with the locker room that’s leading to these inconsistent efforts, and only management really knows the answer to that.

He’s a very low IQ, one dimensional soft center. Guys like him, Zibanejad, and Kyrou I want far away from this team.
