Matthews is such a solid player, and his hands/skating reminds me of mini McDavid.

He will be a Toews/Kopitar like player he is always in the right place on both sides of the ice.

Matthews can`t advance the play. He is just moving the puck and dodging responsibility. Maybe that is because he is not yet that confident on this level.

Team USA was dominant that period. Matthews was all over the puck, Connor and Larkin were flying and making plays and their defensemen were awesome. Great start to the game.

I disagree, I think it's youthful tentativeness in this game. He had one really nice solo rush late in the period and ended up creating a shot for himself out of it. Seems like most of the time he's playing very safe at ES, maybe too much so.

 that goalie interference penalty... The goalie skated directly into Foligno and Foligno is the one that got knocked down.

Penalty Foligno.

Skated right into Foligno, in front of the ref. Ferraro finally changed his tune on goalie interference after that call. Each time Maroon hit the goalie he was pushed.

The change of linemates for Connor has done wonders today, he looks great.

That or he controlled the puck and flow of the game every time he was on the ice.

Not sure what you just watched...

He was playing very safe game. But he did not create any good opportunities for his teammates. He did not play bad. He played solid IMO but solid is not enough when you go against Laine.

He moves the puck to create openings. Do you expect him to skate through 5 players every time? What's impressive is that he rarely loses possession of the puck. He's also playing with college kids... So yeah, go back to the Laine thread.

so, no one is outraged that schroeder is getting 1st unit pp duties ?

Not really given what they brought.

I have always thought Schroeder would be a very good big ice player. He is a guy if he makes the choice to go overseas that could be a big time scorer. He skates well and has a huge shot. He just cannot find the time and space in NA, but on this surface and with the time and space he is a pretty good option.

I never noticed that! Just completely changed my mind on who should go first overall. Thanks! :sarcasm:

You really couldn't ask for a brighter future down the middle. Team USA is going to be sooo good in the near future.

If they let the NHL players go to the 2018 Olympics, the USA will for sure be in medal contention.

Those AND Galchenyuk is another awesome center who is only 22.

My guess is Gally plays the wing on the international teams, because of how complete the three young bucks defensive games are.

After years of meh centers since the Golden Generation, they are all of a sudden bursting at the seems there.

Eichel, Matthews, Larkin, Gally, Tyler Johnson, Bjugstad, Trocheck. In fact even though I like Larkin down the middle, given that grouping he might wind up out wide in the Top 6 as opposed to playing the third line center. But that has been a big problem for the USA in terms of the international stage and it seems we can be confident it will disappear as an issue moving forward.

I just think Larkin will shift to center in tight games at some point so you are running those three over the boards all third period. They are extremely responsible players.

Change in level of skill of opposition may be playing a factor also.
